look at this site: Gmial.com | Personalized email with Hover
I have mis-typed gmail.com many times, but this is the first time it brought me to this.
It looks legit and clicking proceed even without entering anything brings you to hover.com another webmail site.
What do you think? I would have thought google would buy anything closely resembling its domain names.

What could they possibly send a C&D for? They have no legal leverage in this situation... At least I don't think they do?

Simple way of putting this, you get a C&D letter from Google, you do what they say....

When I ran my hosting company I got a few C&D's from really big names. I shut down the sites simply because I didn't want to have to deal with 100 million dollar attorneys.

I got a C&D from Facebook, but didn't comply completely. Most C&D's are all scare tactics. They are just trying to scare you with their big name. If they have no leverage, their attorneys can't do anything.

For example, my C&D from FB was partly for my freelance design work. They traced back my graphics to some viral applications which they consider "malicious". They asked for all my graphics sales for designs made with their website in mind, so I agreed and gave them the the total amount I had made. In their next letter, they demanded that I write them a check for the total amount I made from the graphics. I obviously didn't agree to comply, because in what way do they have the right to that money, especially when none of them contained the Facebook name or logo.

Mark Zuckerberg read this and is on the phone with his attorney right now saying, "I want this arrogant pri** and I want him now." You should probably expect a knock at the door any minute.

              Hahahaha

and whenever you get a C&D from a big company, if they actually have a reason for the C&D letter. Such as a domain name like that, you'd sure as hell better respond because if you don't you're equally liable for not enforcing the document. (Maybe not in ALL cases, but in some very much so)

There was another more "appropriate" reason for the C&D which I agreed to stop immediately

Trademark Violation because their name is too similar to an existing trademark - here GMail.

It's a trademark violation, which is against the law.

Trademarks take around two years to actually have "filed", usually 6 months before you can say you have one. But the USPTO would send that straight back at their face if they tried filing for GMial.

They could try, but they would be denied.

The domain was registered in 2003 - little slow on the uptake but didn't look to see how long the site had been online.

Does it allow you to have your own "smith@smith.net" address?

Does that mean it spoofs the email? Or does it just turn it into like, "smith@smith.oursite.net"?

EDIT: Not to mention I could see Google caring less about this site, had it not been something related to email.
