Hi guys!
I often read about people making a lot of money with the amazon program. I use it too but did never make money with it.

I have a blog about "learning languages". I get at least 100 clicks on amazon links every month but I never made more then 3$...

I use textlinks in my posts. And also links with thumbnails...

Can you give me any advice?

Can I higher my chances by writing specific reviews?

you're not basing this on anything factual. you should really avoid making such statements when you don't have anything to base them on.

I completely disagree. Most people just use the basic resources provided by Amazon and chop it up to Amazon not converting well. I assure you that you can make quite a lot of money with Amazon. I have 100+ Amazon sites that average $1-$50 per day each.

It's hard to give specific advice for your situation without knowing the site, the niche, products, advertising methods, etc.

Certain kinds of sites may not convert as well as others. Personally, I make my sites so they are only receiving highly targeted traffic. It sounds like you may have that going for you, but there could easily be other problems. If you are using the advertising tools from Amazon, that's usually the most common problem. They convert horribly.

Another issue could be the location of your website visitors and/or the products being promoted. Some products on Amazon may be limited to shipping to certain countries. As an example, there are quite a few electronics on Amazon.com that won't ship outside of the USA. If your niche has products like that and your traffic isn't USA based, that can easily cause bad conversion rates.

I use a plugin to make my Amazon ads. I made the plugin, but it's something I modeled after my own advertising that converts at 4-12% (depending on the niche and/or product price).

I don't make blog sites or really even review based sites, like many other Amazon site runners do. I try to create higher quality affiliate sites that people actually share, bookmark and become loyal to. To accomplish that, you just have to provide useful, unique information and do it in a very user friendly manner. I try to use a minimal amount of ads on my sites and hardly ever put more than one or two on a single page, while numerous pages won't have any ads at all. Many marketers view that as a poor way to convert traffic, but I disagree. People want quality, not just an automated review and an ad slapped on every page. Since marketers have traditionally been able to "persuade" people to buy things with dirty tactics, it's become accepted that it's the proper way to do things.

I have a couple of threads that give you more detail on the way I do things with my Amazon sites, if you'd like some more information.

Target specific product names if possible but you'll need to get those pages ranked for those names.

That way you're getting ultra targeted clicks from search engines.

I would check out the courses by Chris Guthrie, Jan Roos and Dan Brock (I personally prefer Jan Roos' course- I have them all and all have something good to say) The key is finding the right niche, getting a good converting review and getting your site to #1 in google and having a LOT of sites. One site won't make much, but 20 will. Keep going at it. You WILL make money. Hope this helps

Yes. If you are focusing on blog, Amazon products aren't going to sell as well as opposed to a simple review site. It sounds like you have had some success (albeit little), but some success nonetheless. If you focus on pumping out sites and writing reviews for individual products you would probably do pretty well.

It sounds like you already have the tough part down (traffic). 100 clicks in a month on a blog is actually pretty good (in my opinion, at least). Now, if you want to focus on making money with Amazon, you are going to have to make a few different websites. Just use the same method you did to get traffic to your current blog. Then write some reviews about similar products and you are all set to go!

    Good Luck!

    Thanks everyone!

    1. Traffic is not the problem. My blog has up to 10'000 visitors per month.
    2. People click on my amazon ads. But they don't buy.
    3. I make ~500$ per month with this blog.

I don't need to use amazon. But to be honest I thought it would go well with my blogs topic...

However. I probably just take it away and try some more affiliate programs. That's what pays off the most so far...

Your advice is good. But I already have my niche. And to rank #1 with a product review can be very hard...

Wow! If you are getting this kind of traffic I would certainly put up adsense! It would be WAY better, plus it doesn't matter if the traffic converts or not because you get paid per click vs. getting paid on a sale.

Better yet you could leave the amazon, CJ, CB, or whatever there and put your 3 adsense ads up and make money on all of them...however your adsense earnings WILL be less doing it that way.

Folks, you CAN make a lot of money with Amazon.

First, how broad is your language site? Do your pages/posts target specific languages? If not, they should. What is your call to action? For example, place a "Click here to compare prices" above the fold on a particular language. The link should take them to the price list page in Amazon for that product.
Example: Amazon.com: Used and New: Learn to Speak Spanish Deluxe

Once you get them there, the cookie is set for you to earn (albeit a short 24 hour period with Amazon) - even if they buy something else.

Another thought for you. You mentioned that there aren't a lot of ebooks out there for German speakers. What about doing 1 of 2 things.

          1. Contact some owners of ebooks that you think would speak to your market and see if they would allow you to translate the book into German and resell it. Maybe you could arrange a higher commission rate or fee for the translation. I am assuming that you speak/read both English and German and that you could translate it.

          2. Pool your knowledge and information and write your own ebook to cater to the audience in German and sell that product for your self. (you could also outsource the writing)

Just a few thoughts that occurred to me when I was reading your post.

Have you checked your links to make sure you have the correct code?

When I started out I made my own codes and I left off the country code accidently - lost a lot of sales that way.

Have you checked to see what countries are visiting your blog?

Install Statcounter.com (it is free) and see where your traffic is coming from. I was surprised to see most of my visitors on one of my sites were coming from the UK. When I dished up an appropriate product for them my sales took off. Are you using Amazon links for different countries?

Is the product you send people to what they are looking for? Again use Statcounter to check queries and make sure you are serving up what they want.

What type of site you have?

Is it a review type site or is it informational?

I have found that review type sites do best with amazon.

    For example:

    Lawnmower reviews
    Cordless drill reviews
    etc.

These people are ready to buy and they are making their decision.

I also have tried some informational posts that get huge conversions. Some examples will be:

What to look for in a cordless drill?
What are the best swimming pool filters?
    etc.

I am doing close to 5k per month on amazon and I am doing nothing else but review type posts.

If you need more help you can ask me, btw.

Use an ad rotator to test a few Clickbank products vs. Amazon products, and add a few specific product review posts into the blog (whether they promote Amazon or Clickbank products). If Clickbank doesn't have any relevant programs, look for private affiliate programs (can't remember if Rosetta Stone's program is private or done through an affiliate clearinghouse...).

hitsintoprofits... you say you make $3 a month from 100 clicks?

I'd say that's pretty normal if:

    * You're targeting low priced products. If you're selling $20 books, and your commission is only 4%, then you're only making $.80 per sale. Sell a Rosetta Stone set for $674 with a 4% commission and you're earning $26.96 per sale. BIG difference.

    * The products you're promoting don't have great reviews. If you're not actually reviewing the products in your posts, your site visitors are going to rely on Amazon reviews. And if those Amazon reviews suck... well then, what's the incentive for them to buy? Links don't automatically equal sales.

If you want sales, you have to be proactive in promoting the product. Maybe a "Products I Like" page where you can post your reviews.

Or if you're going to mention a product in the context of your blog post, then tell WHY you're making the recommendation. Why are you suggesting that product over others? What will readers find in that product that should make them want to buy it?

As the site owner, you're the expert, and your readers are looking to you for guidance. Give them your professional opinion and they will buy from you.

Give them a reason to click on the link and they'll click on the link.

Give them a reason to buy the product and more people will buy the products.

I've made money on Amazon by writing reviews and posting them to Squidoo. You might try something similar with your blog (even though it might not rank as high without Squidoo backing it). But if you're already getting some traffic, you probably need to make those posts review-centered, not information-centered.

And the ads could be detracting from your affiliate links, too. Just a thought.

I agree with you on this. I used to promote Amazon products about 2 years ago and made some money especially during the Xmas period other than that it was very minimal throughout the year.

Personally, I cannot justify the ROI for promoting Amazon products because of the low commission and also because of the dreadful 24 hour cookie.

I have found that my product has to be "pre-sold" to the consumer. This is not the case in services. Also, keep the cost of the product low or you will have terrible percent conversion. For example, I can sell an electronics item at 4% conversion. That is if it is under $99, but more expensive is not good for me.

Here is a case. Fact is you will have less than 1% conversion with expensive cameras. For example those $600 or more. Try to remember that most people are poor.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[3377053].message }}

Nikon came out with a popular new DSLR this year (can't remember which one) and I was going to buy it. As soon as it hit the shelves at Amazon it was sold out... partially fueled by pre-orders. In fact, it was sold out at damn near every online retailer I looked at. And it did cost more than $600.

People ALWAYS have money to spend. During the best of times and during the worst of times, people have money to spend IF you're targeting people with money.

Language learners who buy $647 packages are typically business people and expats who (a) have the money to spend because their company might be footing the bill, or (b) must learn at least some of the language, and already know the great reputation behind Rosetta Stone.

Plus, Rosetta Stone gets people hooked by selling smaller less expensive packages. So you have people who already use Rosetta Stone, love it and simply want to continue with the same program.

You really have to understand the reason why people buy expensive products in order to sell them successfully. Know what factors cause someone to seek out an expensive product. Sometimes it's not just a matter of putting up a rehashed review.

In a nutshell, the best way to optimize your Amazon earnings is by selling a volume of items (no matter how little the individual sales makes) to raise your commission rate, and selling higher-priced items to boost the bottom line.

(That's assuming that the incentive rates are available to you.)

Sell enough cheapo items to raise your commissions from 4% to 6%, and the $29.96 you'd make from that Rosetta package becomes $44.94.

    On a language blog, I'd take a two-pronged approach.

    1. Offer books, spoken-language CDs, audio downloads, video downloads, etc. as "language practice" tools. These should prove to be fairly easy sales, and allow you more freedom to recommend things outside the strict "how to learn a language" field.

    2. Offer more expensive language courses that are proven sellers with multiple good reviews, like the Rosetta products.

Add those to your current content, which people obviously like enough to check out, and you should be able to build a nice moneymaker...

I'm not saying Amazon is great or not. But I'll share my experience.

I get a couple of hundred dollars a month out of Amazon (I get pounds actually from amazon.co.uk). I'm pretty sure I could get more if I decided to go down this route. At the moment, if there is something on Amazon I think my readers will find interesting then I put a text link in (with one of those pop up box things). My conversion rate is about 10%.

I like to look at the reports and see all the weird things people buy as well that I'm not promoting. Once, someone bought a treadmill and when I checked it was £900 ($1455 according to Google) and I only earned £7.00 ($11.00). Someone bought a load of cheap children's books on the same day and I earned £8.00. My sites don't promote treadmills or children's books.

One day I checked the reports and someone had bought guidebooks and language guide to a foreign destination. So obviously they were planning a holiday and when I sent them to Amazon they bought some stuff while they were there.

I guess my point is that if you have websites and a readership then well-placed Amazon text links should get you some sales and make you a little extra on the side. That's even if they don't buy the product you're actually recommending!

Yeah it's because you earn commisions if they click on your amazon affiliate link and then buy something, it doesn't matter what affiliate link page they see, if the cookie is still active when they buy it, you earn a commission.

Someone bought a load of cheap children's books on the same day and I earned £8.00. My sites don't promote treadmills or children's books.

A sell with an 900 pound product, amazon will pay you 5% comission, or not?
Thats more than 7,00 pounds, thats 45 pounds (5%).

I often think that amazon is not a right correct business partner, or other merchants too.

You and I and many other affiliates, can not log the real stats thats the problem, You see, ahh 400 clicks from my visitors go to amazon, but nothing anyone off them buy.
But you make not known, that amazon or the other merchants tell you the truth, your not knowing it.

I often think, that a correct merchant partner, makes with you an contract and gives you the real logg statistics. Thats your right as an business partner or not?

But nothing one off all the merchants make this.
In the real Life, when my business partner says to me many beautiful worths, many blablablba, and do not will make a contract with me, he is a liar,or not correct.

Pity, every affiliate must have a software who can control the statistics of his merchant partner, is there are some software who make this?

Hey Marco and Kierkegaard - I'm very much a newbie to Amazon marketing, but my understanding is that there's a big difference between the UK and US programs.

I'm probably teaching grannies to suck eggs, but just to clear things up, UK affiliate commission is capped at £7 for each item sold. That means that if you're a UK affiliate, it's really not worth promoting products that sell for five figures. You'll be better concentrating on products that are valued at no more than £200.

I don't know what your website is about, but if these Amazon commissions don't work for you, it might be worth signing up as a US affiliate as there aren't the same restrictions.....

    HelloMissLizzie,

    you teaching grannies tu suck...????????

Ok, amazon capped their max. of comission only by uk affililates to max. 7 pounds?

    Only by uk affiliates?
So i live in germany and want only promote my websites in usa. (its little bit better).

I must wait 2 months before amazon send me my check? To germany a little bit longer or what?
Does amazon not pay thier affiliates per paypal?

My advice, forget Amazon with the learn languages niche.

Try promoting the Rocket Languages software on Clickbank. You get nice $60+ commissions.

They have Spanish, French, Italian, German, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Hindi language learning software.

With the 10,000 visitors you get (assuming it's targeted traffic) you will make a lot of money.

Only use Amazon to find a product to promote. Then do a Google search to find other Affiliate Programs that promote the same product. Googles commissions are terrible. You can easily find other sites that promote the same product with an affiliate commission of 10% or higher. Just Google the product name + "affiliate program".

You must be in a good niche to get good results. Try an "evergreen niche" for info products and sometimes physical products will work for evergreen niches as well. Think of what people buy a lot of online versus in a store.

Yes I agree with Jermaine, target specific products on your site and you can make money with them when you are ranked for those products. In addition be sure to mix low and high commission items. The high commission items will give you the most money but the lower priced items will bump your commission up as Amazon goes by number of sales not amount of sales.

It's a good idea to check the Amazon Bestsellers list, and see how the competition is on that particular keyword that relates to that product.

In other words, if you choose a product that is selling well, find keywords with little competition but with reasonable search results, you should be converting through your blog reviews.

Be sure to also look at going after category keywords with qualifiers that get good search volume and use it in your domain name as well as backlinking.

So instead of treadmills, look at treadmills reviews or treadmills for sale. See if the .com/.net/.org is available for that phrase. Then optimize your site for that phrase and use it in your backlinking process....So many great phrases are still available!

    Hi,

The best way to promote amazon products is to create a review site based on your niche. Give valuable content then funnel your traffic to amazon and they will do the selling. I make most of my income through amazon and they convert really well. Cheers!

I use textlinks in my posts. And also links with thumbnails...

Can you give me any advice?

Can I higher my chances by writing specific reviews?

Yep, you can try writing reviews on related language learning items like books and DVDs. Maybe you can try to relate to other related items as well? Say items like reading lights, Kindle reader, foreign language translator devices.
