Is analysis paralysis a lethal disease?

It's really killing me. And it seems uncurable. Over the past few months I have come up with quite a lot of ideas. A few of these have the potential to become a profitable business. But instead of taking action on any of them, I find myself trapped in a perpetual process of analysis. And with analysis comes doubt. And that's a real bitch. No matter how good an idea seems to be, I always start noticing the weak points, the numerous reasons why that particular idea won't work in the end. I literally talk myself out it by over analyzing the idea and find all its weaknesses. And I just can't help it. I know this is wrong and is an action-killer, but this is how I work. I've always been like this. Thinking, analyzing, doubting...and I am paralyzed. I take very little action because I am worried that all the hard work won't bear its fruits in the end. And I know that I can't keep going on long if I don't see some results early on.

Is there a cure for this paralysis by analysis? Or am I doomed? Don't say "take action", because I can't. That is what the problem is. I need to remove the obstacle first.

But how?? I find it's very hard to change my thinking habits.

    zsolt,

    Try this...

Think of all your ideas for making money on the internet and then take those individual ideas and write them on 3" X 5" (or whatever metric size is common where you live) index cards one idea to a card.

Then take those index cards and tape them to a wall in your house so that they cover an area on the wall without overlapping, and without any gaps.

Now take a dart and throw it at the wall where the index cards cover the wall. Close your eyes if you need to, but just don't aim.

Now assuming the dart has hit one of the index cards, you will now have the direction for the idea you want to focus on. It doesn't matter what idea the dart landed on, at this point they all have the same potential.

Take that idea, and only that idea, and work on it until you have got it so down pat that you can teach that idea to a fifth grader.

Like I said, it doesn't matter what idea the dart lands on because what you will actually be doing is teaching yourself how to take action and stick with something until you literally do something with the idea.

Action beats inaction every single time. Taking action is a learned skill to those not born with an action gene. Not everybody has one at birth, but everbody can grow one. But guess what, the only way you can grow an action gene is to feed it action. Action begets action.

It's called momentum, and it is the ingredient that all success is built upon.

The cure is to repeat over and over again " I can, I Can, I CAN!"
You keep telling yourself you can't so you don't - its very simple - stop saying no.

When you come up with an idea take a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle
On the left side list all the tasks to do the job and on the right side list all the reasons why the task won't get done or why the project will fail.
Once you finish listing the tasks on the left and the negative crap on the right - fold the paper in half lengthwise.
Fold it so the left and right columns don't touch. You should have a piece of paper that is half as wide as you started - now pin that up on your wall with the task side showing
You have covered the negative side (you saw it once already you don't need to look at it again)

Now start working through the tasks and cross them off as you complete them.

You won't know if something is going to fail until you DO IT.

Better to fail and learn then to do nothing at all.

Now get going and start doing it!

    • I can tell you from experience failure is the BEST way to learn. You learn about 800% more from losing than you do from winning And it makes winning feel A LOT better.

Always start with a simple strong idea. IE: I'm good at web design, so I'm going to design pages for a few people. You bring in some money and new ideas will come to you as you do business and fulfill your customers needs.

You already have the solution and it IS to take action. Just pick something you're good at, and figure out the most direct and simple way to make money from it. Try it out, then analyze, then improve, and make more money!

    zsolt,

I know exactly what you mean. I am the same way and fight to overcome it every single day. I basically do what Killer Joe says... set defined goals and DO THEM.

The first thing I do when I want to accomplish something... without getting off track or worse, not even getting started, is write a plan. Then I break the plan up into weekly, sometime daily, goals and just work to achieve whats right in front of my face. Again, its that feeling of accomplishment and working towards a goal that keeps me motivated and on course.

Hope this helps and keep going!

Thank you for all the wonderful tips and thoughts. It's very late here and I'll have to go to work tomorrow (actually it's already tomorrow), so please excuse me for not posting a longer reply. I will tomorrow...I mean today.

        Thanks again.

Killer Joe is so smart. If you guys only knew... I've had the pleasure of long discussion with the man and I can say with conviction, he's a guy who completely gets "it".

His advice (as usual) is great.

I would add this little gem a good friend of mine posted to a music related group we both belonged to many years ago...

"Holding off until all your limitations are conquered is a fool's game--it just leads to doing nothing, because there will always be something else you COULD have done better..." -- Doug Robinson

Doug is a phenomenal jazz musician, but he's also a genius marketer.

We were talking about music, but Doug was talking about more than that.

    Best,

    Brian

The only way to succeed is by failure. It's how we learn. You can not have one without the other. The great part about internet marketing is you don't lose tons of money when you fail, like a brick and mortar business.

Learn to fail fast and you will be suceessful!

Here's what you need to do:

IMMEDIATELY after you have a good idea do this:

      # 1: Work out one thing you can do to put your idea in motion that will take you 5-15 minutes to complete.

That might be setting up a domain name, creating an optin page, a sales page, writing one page of a report, setting up an audio interview with an expert etc etc.

Meaningful action steps that will bring real results.

      # 2: Do it IMMEDIATELY.

      # 3: Work out another thing you can do to move your idea forward that will take you 5-15 minutes.

      # 4: Do it IMMEDIATELY.

      # 5: Work out another thing you can do to move your idea forward that will take you 5-15 minutes.

      # 6: Do it IMMEDIATELY.

      # 7: Work out another thing you can do to move your idea forward that will take you 5-15 minutes.

      # 8: Do it IMMEDIATELY.

      # 9: Work out another thing you can do to move your idea forward that will take you 5-15 minutes.

      # 10: Do it IMMEDIATELY.

I think you get the idea.

Somewhere between 1 day and 1 month of doing this and your paralysis of analysis will be gone.
