hi all,

i dont know if any of you remember, but i posted a thread a few days ago, asking whether a niche i was looking at would be viable, or rather whether id be able to rank for it as ive never built an affiliate site before.

well i finally bit the bullet last night and brought my domain and sorted hosting with hostgator and set about building my first site with my affiliate links, one to a particular product and another link to a clickbank product. That was about half one last night when i set it live with a couple of articles which i had spun for me.

Its now 12 hours later, and when i did a quick google search for my keywords, i am ranked number 3 on google for the main keyword and number 12 for another. Im amazed, ive been so worried that i would not be able to rank a website if i was to build one, then within 12 hours ive been able to rank pretty well already. Mostly down to the advice ive picked up from you guys here at the warrior forum.

Heres to whether i start to make a few conversions. Ill keep you all up to date with the progress.

Thanks again

Dave

There are plenty of good keywords you can look at without asking someone to giftwrap a niche for you.

You are missing the ones that expect everything gift wrapped for them so they have as little work as possible, but struggle to do any thinking on their own.

You would be much better off by him teaching you how he came up with the keyword opposed to giving you the keyword. Ironically enough, he would be better off that way too.

All goes back to the old "give a man a fish" saying.

Way to go, Dave. Now remember to stick with IM, even when you launch a niche that doesn't fly so quickly.

The top ranking is a temporary part of the process - the site is indexed but it is not ranked. What you are seeing as "rank" now is not likely to be where the site is in a few days.

When your site is indexed, it is thrown "into the mix" and due to your own search behavior it will show as near the top in google when it is first indexed.

I hate to burst the bubble but if you understand how it works, you won't be here crying "google dropped my site" in a few days because you will know what is happening. The site will bounce around for a bit - land lower than it is now - and THEN you work to move it up in rank.

Dave, Kay is absolutely right, and you'd do well to heed her advice. What is happening now has been termed by some as the "Google dance", and this is when your site will jump up and down in ranking with no apparent rhyme or reason. You'll still have to further optimize your website, and continue building backlinks to it if you want to obtain a permanent first page ranking for your websites.

Traditionally, the "google dance" was a re-positioning by google every few months. It hasn't been a real dance for a couple years as positioning is now ongoing.

Maybe we should call it the "index boogie" - it fools new site owners all the time. If you understand how it works and know the "great results" are a bit of an illusion and temporary, you avoid the panic of "google dropped my site to the 10th page" in a few days.

    Congrats for taking action!

Quick question - what link building strategies did you use?
    Only submitting those two articles?

    Thanks,

    • Don't be discouraged if it swings either way, but do keep a steady flow of articles, comments, guest posts, etc. to ensure you remain where you are or possibly go higher.

Some people even recommend using no-follow links within your main page except for one link to a major resource you do not own in the niche and a link to your product.

I do not advise doing this until you really know what you are doing however as it can penalize you with google if done incorrectly.

As the others say, don't get upset if your rankings bounce.

    It's part of the landscape.

    Another tip:
Make sure you are logged out of any google account when you are searching for your keywords - google tracks that and will promote the sites you click on toward the top of YOUR results that you see while logged in.

The results seen by others can vary WIDELY from those.

    All success,

    Gary

You can also use scroogle.org to help you find where you actually sit. It scrapes information from the data centers to give you a more accurate idea on where you stand.

WOW! That's fantastic! As was mentioned already, sometimes your google position moves around a bit. My first site was at number 13 when I FIRST built it and it got indexed! Then, I built some backlinks and got it to #11... then the next day, it was at 287! So... watch out for that. Keep putting on good content and don't build links in spammy ways and you'll be fine. Sounds like you found a GREAT niche... a word of advice... DON'T share it with others (unless you want to send me a PM... just kidding )

Good example - once your site hit #287 you knew what you needed to do to start moving it up (by looking at the sites ranked higher).

I see this a lot - and new site owners often look for "the why". They worry about their backlinks and whether another site owner is trying to damage them, etc. They wear themselves out looking for reasons that don't exist. It's just new site behavior - and how google assigns ranking.

Its been a month now, so thought i would give a quick update, I have about 7-8 backlinks for the site now, and its sitting comfortably at number 1 spot on google and has been for the past couple of weeks. So far its only generated me about $40, but from one little site with 4 posts in a month its not bad going i guess
