Do You Set Up Any Contracts When You Work With Guest Writers?

I have a few questions regarding guest writers.

When you work with guest writers, do you sign any contracts with them?

When they write columns on your blog, does the content belong to them?

Apart from taking a look at their articles, websites and online credibility, do you consider anything else?

Do you typically run any guest article submitted via Copyscape before submitting?

  • Here's my experience as a ghost-guest-blogger.

    * I've never had a blog owner ask me to sign a contract.

    * The content still belongs to the guest blogger. However you may state in your terms, that the content cannot be reposted elsewhere. This is a pretty standard request, though some bloggers will allow their guest bloggers to repost articles elsewhere after 90 days.

    * The main things you should be looking at is their blog and previous articles written.

    * You can do a Copyscape run if you want. But I find that if you have a webpage outlining your guidelines, including: how long the articles should be, topics you want, resource box/linking rules, etc, you'll have a much better chance of attracting quality submissions.

    I run a directory where guest bloggers can find gigs. Check out some of the blogs listed there to see what other blog owners are saying in their submission guidelines.
