What is the BEST Speech to Text Software? Dragon Nuance is too expensive...

Hi,

I'm looking at a great Speech to Text Software..and I've read that Dragon Nuance is good but its starting price is $200. I found the link to get it off a torrent but its close to 1GB and some of the reviews talk about a trojan and it being too slow, not worth the price etc.

I want to create an audio book but also have a transcript of the same - do not want to get it manually done - so my question is

a. What is the best FREE Speech to Text software?

b. If there is nothing good out there, then can I use Audacity or Hi-Q Recorder for the Audio Book or is there something better?

Appreciate the help in advance.

There's a $58 version of Dragon Naturally Speaking Dragon Naturally Speaking selling on Amazon right now.

This one is fine for everyday use.

There's also Windows Voice Recognition, which is included with Win 7.

I've tried both, and I hated Windows Voice Recognition.

Okay, I'm not too familiar with this type of thing, but does that mean that you would have downloaded a pirated copy but the download was too large?

It's a worthy project and the money is worth it to get the most current version. I've bought Dragon and Mac Dicate. Dragon is the way to go in my opinion.

It works really well, but there is allot more editing than typing of course.

Here is a sample of a transcript showing accuracy, and video.

That's exactly what it means. Anytime you see "torrent" you can be pretty sure that it's a pirated copy of whatever is being downloaded.

If you have Windows Vista you already have a speech recognition program.
All speech programs require training. The more you train it the better it gets.

For Vista, Goto the Control panel and look for "Speech Recognition Options"
    Click on it and begin.

If you don't have it already then Dragon is the way to go. Isn't it worth the investment
for your business. In offline business when you have to buy a peice of equiptment it
rarely ever pays for it's self during the first few usages although over time they do and
everything gained after that is total profit.

    Just saying,
    Have a Great Day!

I totally agree with Michael. It's worth it to invest in your business. I've had Dragon for years and it works great. The Vista stuff works but not as good as Dragon. The only problem I have with Dragon is the Nuance guys never stop calling with yet another deal.

Someone told me to try SpeechToText Pro, which is not quite free but almost free at $2.49, and I became surprised at how well it works on my Lumia 640. Its speech recognition depends on an internet connection though.

    you dont need dragonspeak.

just use the command "ok google"... note to self.

im sure siri has a similar feature.

extra tip: go to Google drive and open google docs then add on the speech recognition, it works just as good as dragon speak,

    all the best,

    This thread is from 2011.

    Anyways...

Android phones have speech to text built in so it's basically free, just record and send the text as an email.

    On Android:
    • Go to the Memo app
    • Start a new memo
    • Click the microphone on the keyboard
    • Start talking and the app converts it to plain text
    • Save the memo
    • Send the memo to your email
    • Download to your desktop or wherever
    • Done

You can use speech to text for windows and Linux as an alternative to Dragon, I cost only $16 for year and use Google speech recognition API. See video of using the tool

If you are using a Mac, dictation is built in. If you're not using a Mac, my deepest condolences.
