How do you think a domain name?

Hi, from the last few hours I am trying to register a good domain name. First, I am unable to think a GOOD domain name and once I think a good domain name, its not available :p

I always have problem while registering domain name for my new websites. Do you people also face problems while thinking a domain name? How do you find good domain names? Any tools available which can help!

Thanks

Trust me it is a universal problem. All good domain names have either been taking or have been bought by some crook who later sells it at a skyrocketing price of about $1,500.00 as I saw the last time I was trying to register a new domain and it was taking so I went to the domain to see what the other website was all about and the domain was just redirected to a sales page that was proposing me the domain at one unimaginable price.

There are still Millions of good domain names available you jsut have to be creative and try and get your keywords in there if you can. I have found that even dashes in the domain dont hurt not if its back to front sideways or upside down lol it still works.

I will admit its tiring to think of a creative domain only to see someone sitting on it but the good thing with that is they are no competition for your product even though they have the best domain name and you can still target those keywords using anchor text and building backlinks to your site.

What I usually do is come up with a list of generic short words like: zone, hub, blog etc... Then when I add one of these to my keywords related to my site and can usually come up with reasonable short domain names (as long as its not in a really hot niche)

Example .com domains i've registered recently:
      DSFAN
      WINELOVERSPOT
      IPODPOP
      TEXTUREHUB

I kind of like the challenge of finding something available

      cheers,
      Simon

Keyword research related to your niche.

Try the Google keyword tool, type in the main keywords for your niche and let it provide you with more possibilities. Be sure to select "exact" on the left side of the page (default setting is broad match).

Once you get a list of the keywords it will show the monthly search volumes and competition (although some will say it isn’t that accurate). You could then take those keywords to Market Sam and check them out there as well.

Once you narrow it down to the keywords/phrases you like then go searching for available domain names. If you can get an exact match domain name that’s appropriate to your niche that will help a lot...especially in the beginning when your site is new and doesn’t have many backlinks or much content.

    Hi Supersonic,

One of the tricks used by many IMers is to add a short word before or after their keyword phrase. Example: if your keyword phrase is "elephant grooming", then you could always check to see if elephantgrooming101.com is available, or maybe myelephantgrooming.com

This works because the search engines ignore short filler words and numbers. So when they see elephantgrooming101.com, they toss out the 101 and only pay attention to the elephantgrooming. In other words, you end up with a domain name that looks almost the same as a 'pure' keyword domain name.

These throw-away words are called stop words, and there was a thread here on WF some months back that listed dozens of them. If you'd like to read more, do a search here on WF for "stop words".

Just to get you started, here's a short list of common stop words beginning with 'a' and 'b'.

Also, don't be overly picky about the TLD and refuse to settle for anything but a .com, as this will considerably lessen your chances of finding a decent domain name.

A .net is fine, Google doesn't discriminate

Only if you plan to sell the domain may it lower the value of your site.

I prefer something related to your niche, not too long, no symbols, and .com domains
If you really want a .com domain that's taken, you can go with .net
