weight loss niche - making $2500 as profit

Hello Friends,

I am regular reader of warrior forum and i am very helpful to tips i got from several SEO gurus and friends.

I am into weight loss niche and into top 3 spot for competitive keywords. My commission for Feb 2011 is almost $1800 so far ( i will make minimum $2.5-3K this month), Jan 2011 was $2100, Dec 2010 $500, Nov 2010 - $250, Oct 2010 - $250.

Ranking is into top 3 for past 1 month so i got increase in revenue. From Oct. 2010 to Dec. 2010 it was at the bottom of page so commission was less.

I will make minimum $5000 if i make it top 1. So i need your advice should i sell it now or wait until i make it first spot. If i want to sell it now than what price i should sell it for.

The above figure which i have listed is 100% pure profit and i am doing seo in house so i don't have any expense rather than $10 per month as hosting.

My apologies, English is not my first language so please beg my pardon if i made some mistakes in writing.
#$2500 #loss #making #niche #profit #weight

I'd wait for top spot, especially if you are still making good money. People love top spot at Google. More profit will definitely push the price up!

He said he wants to start a travel portal.

Also, maybe the top 2 competitors for that keyword will take a long time to beat.

There are many reasons for selling a site, cash flow, lack of interest, risk aversion.

Why not reach that top spot, enjoy it for a few months then rent out spaces
in your sites to some of the big players in the weight loss industry.

This way you get to keep your money machine.

Though selling it will be a one-time big-time deal, there are also benefits
in keeping a money making site for years.

I can kinda understand where you're coming from here. I have a site that is doing similar numbers in terms of profit to yours and I have considered selling it a few times. It can be quite tempting to think along the lines of "Well, if I can get 10x it's monthly profit, that will be quite a price!", but that isn't guaranteed. You could maybe only make 4 or 5 times the monthly profit, or even less.

If you're in the top 3 for your keyword(s) then why not go for the number 1? If you're making so many sales, then your site must clearly help people and give them what they want so I say try and upscale that. There may come a time where for whatever reason, you need the kind of money selling it would bring, but until then, it's a guaranteed monthly money maker with potential - I say keep it and make it bigger and better

Well you're doing weight loss pills, Lipofuze-style, and you have to ask yourself how long can the **** model sustain that pace even with high ranks?

The niche itself is just as important as the money being generated. If you feel its sustainable for at least another year (meaning your traffic/income won't fall and thus turn this into an asset that has no value to someone else due to the decline) then keep it.

If you feel that the fad could pass and you'll be stuck holding the bag at the end, then try to move it.

Either way you likely collected the emails of the buyers, which is the REAL asset you've got, as you monetize them 100 ways from Sunday with other weight loss offers indefinitely.

Hope this helps, congrats on building a valuable site!

Somewhat true, but just the earlier replies. I would suggest for you to wait till its back to the top before selling it! you would have the advantage of selling it our right away and even paly with the price of it! We have to remember "PATIENCE" is a VIRTUE!!

Get it to the top spot before selling it. The price is better and your mind has the chance to change. Having a site that valuable is really something so you should better think twice before doing so.

I think you should wait for No.1 position as you will get about 40% of traffic for the keyword you rank No.1.When you make more sales and increase your profit, your site will be worth more.
To sell or keep? I think it may depend on whether you want quick cash or monthly cash-flow;and whether you are happy to keep working on the site or you want to move on to other projects with more potential.

You'll have a tough time selling it if you only rank for 1 keyword.

I would never buy a site that isnt diversified in its pages that rank well.

BTW is the site diet pill or weight loss in general? If its general weight loss I may be interested in buying it from you

I would say keep the site for a few months at least, see if you are able to get it into the top 2 positions and if you do that would be one extremely profitable site. Sure there is risk but you've done it once so you know how you can do it again. =)

Umm...why would you sell it? You've worked hard to make a site rank, and it's pulling you several thousand/month in profit. Just keep the site, keep building links and creating content, and let it bring in the cash for the next several years. Sure you could get a bunch of money if you sold it right now, but you'd also lose your source of cash flow.

Keep the site. Built a new site and use some of your profits from your first site to promote it.

Just a question if you don't mind, what type off backlinking techniques are you doing? article marketing? blog commenting? forums?

and what kind of search volume is your site getting per month?

@ Lisa Paule, i am doing all types of back linking like press release, forum posting, article submission, articles submission into blog sites/directories, social bookmarking, web 2.0 properties. I am getting 18-20K visitors per month. I am working hard to reduce bounce rate which is 63% currently.

@ Brusacco, i will be happy if i am paid 3 yrs revenue, which makes site value to $180K.

if the site's pulling that much money, then there's no reason you shouldn't be able to significantly increase the amount it's taking in. Start targeting other keywords and whatnot. I wouldn't sell it until you've had it doing 5k/month for at least 6 months. That'll guarantee you about 50k.

Although, why would you need 50k now as opposed to yearly? It's a sizable amount of money, but barely enough to sustain someone for a year. I'd only be only keen on selling smaller sites for 2-5k. The small ones don't require a lot of work and you can turn over several a year.

Personally, if this was my site, I would not sell at all but just continue to reap the revenues. If you can bring it up to where you make a couple of thousands a month, you should consider building more sites like that and duplicate your earnings. That should make you a nice steady income which continues to grow rather than get a one time cash from selling.

I recommend that you wait until you hit the top spot for all the keywords before selling. If you decide to sell , If you site has a long and strong earning history, sell it for 20 times the monthly earnings.

Now you know exactly which keyword to target!

You should build 10 sites for that exact keyword and blanket the first page of Google.

To make it less obvious for your competition buy 5 or 6 keyword domains, host with DIFFERENT hosting companies and build those sites out and do SEO for them.

Then find 4 or 5 web 2.0 sites and build pages or blogs on them and rank them. That way the first page in Google will look complete normal for everybody - but you own it!

It is true that some diet fads tend to come and pass after some time. If this is your case, selling your site could be a smart idea. I would not sell it for less than at least 10 times what make per month.

However, if you are sure you keywords won't lose demand as the time goes, you can hold your site and make even more from in the future (you can target even more competitive terms related to the terms you are targetting now).
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[4634310].message }}
  • To answer your question, what price should you sell your site? The general rule of thumb for selling a business is 12 times yearly earning. But like alot of the other guys why would you sell a site that you making money off of? Take the profit and build another 10 in different niches!

Well done on building on your success and making even more money I actually sold the site I mentioned in my first reply in this thread and got around 6 times its monthly revenue. I did this for a specific reason though - I wanted myself, my wife and my son to have our first big family holiday. We went on a 2 week cruise(got back just over a week and a half ago) and had an amazing time, and those memories will last forever Also, we have lived very comfortably in the months since I sold that site. Whilst I absolutely don't regret selling the site, it was my biggest earning site, and as a result I now find myself having to rebuild in terms of adding to my existing niches and sites to generate the kind of money I was before the sale.

So yeah, if you are happy to keep it and keep increasing its income, then that sounds like a very good plan. Only if you need the money for something specific would I recommend you sell it at this point. It's good to always have it there in case something comes up though, and knowing it's bringing you in very nice money each month is a wonderful feeling I'm sure

Your selling price will likely reflect your PAST 6+ months of earnings, a serious buyer will want to see the stats and proof of this.

If you rank it NOW +3 positions up in Google...your last 6 months earnings will still be the same - but assuming that you manage to rank higher NOW and you get significantly more revenue - the buyer would still "only" see the last months revenue where you were not #1.

UNLESS you rank it higher now and wait another several months so you can provide the steady, increased revenue form the better position.

For me, it's unlikely that a buyer would pay the price for a #1 position and better rankings if you cannot show this very same revenue for AT LEAST some months. It's on you....and/or whether you can convince the buyer that he should pay more according to the better rankings, but might be difficult.

I can vouch for this. With the site I sold, I calculated my average montly income for the previous six months and provided all stats(Google Analytics, rankings, earnings screenshots) for this period. As it happens, the site had only started making serious money in that previous six months so it worked out perfectly for me. And like I said, I got around 6 times my monthly average.

@ Liam Hamer - I agree with you as sometime happiness or good memories are more important than money. If you have any website for sale, let me know i may buy it.

@ GeorgR. - my last 6 month average is only $4500, however last 3 month average is $5500, now i will work hard to make it top spot and also reduce my bounce rate. After that when it averages min. 7K, i will sell it.

Sorry I am not clear - how do you actually make revenue from the site?

Did you develop and ebook and sell it for the keyword?

Do you do affiliate for other people in this niche, as in sell their ebooks or other information packages or pills?

Do you do an affiliate program with someone like amazon or some other large specialty retailer, promoting their exercise equipment?

Where does you major source of revenue come from?

If you can keep the site making money for years to come then I would say you should just keep it. At least get rank 1 first and get your monthly earnings increased. If you don't make it to the first spot within the next 4 or 5 months and you want to just drop the site, then I would say go for it!

For the price of the site, I would say start it out at what would be 3 years or income, if it doesnt sell as quickly as you like then reduce it to 2 years and so on. Just depends how fast you are trying to sell your site and how much money you want for it.

    good luck

Currently i am averaging 22,500 per month, so even if i am number 1, total traffic will go up to 27-28,000. But i don't want to have number 1 by doing black hat. I know number 1 will increase my income by 25% minimum. But as i am in weight loss niche, only few visitors visit site 1, buy product or go away. But majority of visitors will visit site 2 at least. The reason i am telling you this is that, i enjoyed position 1 in June when my income was $6500.

Why selling a site that makes you a money?

Invest more time and become #1 and just watch how money comes to you

@ MatthewEan - I got top 3 by doing regular link building, i guess you are new member, so please don't increase your post by writing small comments else moderator may ban you.

@ MickoP - i may sell site as i need to start travel portal. I will only sell if i get best deal.

Why not aim for the #1 spot first. You may surprise yourself and find that the potential profit is more than if you had sold the site.

If working on the site no longer makes you happy, though, then by all means consider selling it.

I would keep it as well. And then scale it up.

I agree with the concept that you should average the monthly income that the site is making, come up with an annual expected revenue, and make that your selling price.

    Nice job on the ranking!

Thanks everyone, i have decided that i will only sell it when ranking is stable at first spot. Currently working on task of reducing bounce rate.

If you have to sell it, I think that's the better option.

But can't you start building the travel portal while this one is bringing in income?

Let the weight loss site pay for your expenses, and the travel site is more of your big dream kind of thing.

Wow, congrats on your success. Is the business taking so much of your time that you can't start another site? I'm honestly curious. If you don't have other distractions, like a job (ha!) maybe you should consider doing the same thing for a different niche like others have suggested.

Why only have one site? Is that a bad question to ask. Rinse and repeat?

Considering you are making 100 % profit what is the hurry? You might as well wait for the top spot especially when you very well know that you have made good money. Being on Google on the topmost list will by all means push the prices a lot more if you will wait! All the best..!

Why do you want to sell it? You have worked hard and got top 3 rankings. Like most warriors, i think you should keep working to get more traffic then.

Congrats on your success. Instead of selling it, instead of trying to rank higher, why not focus some energy on monetizing it further? I'm presuming you're building a list prior to shooting it off to the CPA offer so why not further monetize your resource prior to looking in other directions?

Are you up selling the people who purchase? Cross promo with other similar products?
There might be better paths than the ones you're currently exploring. If the site is no longer your passion, why not consider keeping the site but partnering with someone who can take it to the next level and retain a percentage of the earnings while allowing yourself to move on to your next project? Then you've got the best of both worlds.

    DON'T SELL!

There is nothing more annoying than seeing the domain you sold 2 years ago still ranked at the #1 spot. You then just realize how much money you have actually "lost".

Obviously, as another member stated, there can be many reasons for selling a website. However, in your case, I would strongly urge you to think long and hard about the matter before you sell it. I know that you may need the money for an upcoming project or something else, or you may not see much long-term value in the site, in which cases it is perfectly acceptable to sell it.

However, if you don't need a large cash injection and the site doesn't show any signs of slowing down, $5,000 per month is a very nice income and it would be a shame to get 5-10 months worth of income from a sale...and then no more. I've seen many warriors on here just starting out that only dream of having a site generate such an income.

If you still want to sell it, do what another member said and start building a list NOW. Try to build it as long as you can (6-12 mo) before you sell the site. That way, once the site is gone, you can continue to profit from the list. Also, you could include a small portion of your subscribers as part of the sale. This helps to increase the value of your sale.

    Congratulation on your success!
