Wordpress Pros and Cons

Hello,

I do not know programming and put up my first website using Site Build It (SBI) the flagship product of Ken Envoy's sitesell.com

Now I want to put up a second site and am thinking of using Wordpress. I bought Brian Johnson's SEO Press package which deals with putting up Wordpress blogs and optimizing the blog for free Search Engine traffic.

My impression of Wordpress is that it is a powerful platform for SEO. But I read in a pdf that it is easy to hack into and a pain to maintain (needs a lot of time and effort).

So what would be best? Get Dreamweaver or some other software or should I use wordpress.. Also what would be the cost of these various options if you compare them with each other.

All this is required because I don't know programming and also do not wish to learn. But there must be many persons here in the same boat as me..

Any comments? I would appreciate any help.

regards

Nikhil

    Nikhil,

    Use WordPress. Period.

It has hardly any disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage people have is keeping it updated with the latest version. But, this is easily overcome with a plugin which allows a 'one-click update'.

The plugins, themes, support, and ease of use make it a no-brainer.

Waste no more time. Go WordPress.

Also, find a host which offers Fantastico and you'll be able to install it with a click of a button.

To be honest I really can't see any downside to wordpress
it can and will do almost anything you want and if you can't
find a feature you can get a programmer to create it for you...

Again everthing is about your budget...

BIGMIKE has an excellent product going on there you should check
    it out asap...

@JKnight - 2.7 has built in one click upgrade and one click plugin install

@Nikhilg WP has a ton of advantages first that you do not need to know any fancy code or hacks and second one of the things that I love is the plugins that you can use to really add more functionality to your site.

All the best with your decision

Security for WordPress isn't a big issue as long as you're careful about the themes and plugins you load, don't leave registration open and don't leave other remote operations open. Oh, and if you don't use stuff like 'password' or 'secret' for your admin password.

It is very easy to hack .. unless you secure it .. See my signature as I have just the product you need for security. Security is a huge issues, just read my website. 100,000's of blogs are hacked every year that have nothing to do with plugins or themes. Some plugins and themes are bad though ...

As far as running a wordpress blog, it is not as hard as you would think. Sure the posting html sucks and the software is a bit bulky and might take some time getting used too..

For the most part though many run a wordpress blog with a great deal of success...

Umm, I saw your post and was going to make a suggestion. But BIG Mike already made it.

I've used Wordpress to deploy a lot of content sites. Now that I have EZ Content Manager, I very seriously doubt I'll ever use Wordpress for a content site again.

      Hi Nikhil

Wordpress is a really good blog platform and yes there are some security issues but a lot of security comes down to using common sense. I think I read on an IM forum about 18 months ago that upwards of 80% of blog users tend to use admin to login in. To be honest that is just asking for trouble!!

The pro's of using Wordpress far outweigh the cons. Once you get around what to do it's probably one of the most SEO friendly platforms you can use.

As a beginner to Intermediate blogger stick with it. As you get more advanced then you can pay someone to put something up for you.

One thing I like about wordpress is that it's constantly being updated so bugs and security issues tend to get 'cured' on an ongoing basis.

However, Nikhil I also understand you dislike programming but I think that you will need to learn some as just a few 'tweaks' here and there on coding that comes from suggestions that other users on Forums have that can really make a huge difference to the performance of some of the plugins.

Also one last word on security - if someone really wants to hack into your blog or site they will probably find a way.

All things considered go with Wordpress!

Wordpress rocks. I'm using it for several sites and am having a membership site built with it. The great thing about Wordpress isn't just the SEO-friendliness but that there are plugins for just about anything - and I mean anything - you could possibly want to do .

Something I don't like about Wordpress...

I have a holiday site that has gone through several transformations. It has always been on Wordpress. My biggest complaint is that if I want to have content about different holidays on that site, the best I can do is go in and change themes on the appropriate date. And if someone happens to hit a Christmas article in February, they're going to be reading a Christmas article on a Valentine's Day template.

In EZ Content Manager I can load up a template for each holiday, and assign each article to the appropriate template. So in the same scenario the visitor would see the Christmas article on a Christmas template in February, then if they navigated over to a Valentine's Day article, they would see it on the Valentine's Day template.

This can be done, John. It requires custom coding, but it can be done.

In fact, this plugin my Alister Cameron makes it even easier - Wordpress Plugin: ClassyBody

No, no, no...steer clear of GoDaddy. Their site navigation will drive you nuts if the constant barrage of upsells doesn't do you in first. Seriously, whoever told you to use GoDaddy for your host is not your friend.

I recommend BlueHost.com as your host. They have alot of features, WP, Fantastico, user friendly, easy to navigate, very good customer service from my experience and affordably priced. What more could you ask for if you're looking to implement WP?

I agree with the PRO WordPress comments. I don't use for it everything, but I do use it for most sites.

I use RapidNicheWebsite for my Themes. I am able to design my own headers and then wrap a nice, tweaked theme around the header using RNW.

I do tend to use the same RNW theme for most, just because of my personal preferences and taste.

I have a new site ready to go live and I am REALLY happy with it! ;-)

  • EZ Content Looks pretty good. Wordpress is THE solution to free blogging. If you need advanced cms feeatures wordpress will struggle with it in without a lot of updates.

Wordpress is about as simple as you can get and still maintain flexibility in an app. There's only 10 database tables in 2.6, and with some basic programming knowledge you can modify your template to do almost anything.

@John you can set a unique template for each page in wordpress, but not each post.

my opinion is Wordpress is by far the most versatile form of a CMS you can get.

Its open source you can go in and have changes made either by you or a work for hire programmer.

    Its under constant development

there is a whole literary of FREE plugins to turn your wordpress into the incredible hulk if you want.

I have ran tons of sites and wordpress is always the first thing I insatll even before thinking of what the site might be about ^_^

@John Rogers - a rotating theme plugin was released a couple of days which you can use to set up your valentines day site, christmas site by just telling it when to move the template.

I have over 30 sites with WP - since version 2.3 and haven't ever looked back - when I start a new one, it's always WP - even if my site is going to be a static site - it's that easy, and there are thousands of free templates to use - The plugins are amazing and the user base is huge, so if you get stuck, help is always around the corner.... and if you happen to find that a plugin isn't available for what you want to do... rentacoder or elance has tons of programmers from around the world that would love to build it for you - usually for real cheap.

My vote is for Wordpress -

    Hi Nikhil,

I have actually a very similar story to yours. I started two and a half years ago with SBI!

Here you can have a look how my website looked about a year ago - still with SBI!:
Belly Button Rings Guide - Find The Best Navel Body Jewelry Online!
(it will show you some distortions, it's alexa time machine)

and this is how my site looks now on WP:

Belly Button Rings Guide - Find The Best Navel Body Jewelry Online!

I guess it's pretty hard to compare them, isn't it? I bless the day I transferred it to WP!

I got a good coder who customizes the themes for me, and SEO is just brilliant with WP. I get more traffic from Google, more affiliate commissions, and eventually I set up two more new similar sites:

Nose Rings Shopping | Nose Piercing Information
    Tongue Rings Guide

So for you as a former fellow SBIer I can tell one thing - their webbuilder is archaic, to say the least. WP is so easy to manage, create categories, tags, everything. In WP you can accomplish in a minutes a task that would take you hours in SBI webbuilder!

So my advice is definitely - WP!

    Best of luck,

    Robby

Robby your website on Wordpress looks fantastic compared to the SBI site. When you say you transferred it over to WP, do you still pay the SBI recurring fee, or is it a wp blog outright now? Either way, massive improvement. I don't think i could read info from a SBI site, they look crap.

        Hi,

No I don't pay SBI anything now. I got refund for the remaining months and transferred everything - domain, hosting, everything and the site is on my server now.

Yeah, the new site's look is like the 21st century against the 19th!:-)

Wow! Your Belly Button Rings Guide - WP site is fantastic! You did a fabulous job - and so did the person who created your template.

The other two are good, but that first one is great. Very professional indeed. It's easy to see how your WP versions will get you more sales.
