are they a waste of money? i've read some good and bad stuff about 3waylinks- heard it's just like renting links for a hefty price and the links are low quality but i've heard folks swear by it.

anyone have any experience with other programs as well?

Links created by automation (robot) techniques will generally be low quality, a few direct exchanges with other sites in your field may look better than dozens of 3 way links to unrelated fields from your site.
Examining top ranked sites will often reveal they have bough in article and site wide links.
