Article Marketing 101: Stop Making Excuses and Get Traffic!

Hi Warriors,

I am currently "marketing" a number of articles for a couple of my own websites and would like to just remind you (especially those who have lost faith) that there really is no secret to article marketing. Providing you perform your keyword research with Google's keyword tool and then check each keyword out in the search results to see what you are up against, you should have no problems placing on Google.

Many people think that there are special secrets to getting traffic, but what it comes down to is a solid strategy and consistency. There really is nothing more to it than that. Here is a basic strategy based on one article that anyone can follow:

1) Write a 500 word article for your website based on a particular relevant keyword that you would like to target.

2) Write another article on the same keyword but remember that the article needs to be equally helpful but not promotional. This should be sent out to the top article directories - maybe 4 or 5.

3) In the resource box of this article, place one link to your home page, and one link to the original article on your website (using the keyword).

4) Use a social bookmarking service like IMAutomator.com to bookmark both articles. This helps to get them indexed quickly.

5) Write one more new article based on the same keyword and use a tool like Article Marketing Robot to blast it out to hundreds of directories and blogs. The resource box for this should link back to the original article on your website as well as the article on one of the article directories (preferably Ezine or Article Base).

That is pretty much it. However, one tip is to make all three articles as helpful as possible. Keep in mind that you are not just going for the backlinks, but you want people to read the articles and be inspired to visit your website too. Don't spin the articles - you will not be punished for duplicated articles despite what some people say.

There are other things you can do with each article such as creating a Facebook post or comment that links back to the article, or use twitter to do the same. However, if you use the above method for an article a day - you will see exciting results within a few weeks, sometimes sooner depending on the keyword.

Hope that helps.

Regards,
Antony.

Not a problem. Content is still the number one way for internet marketers to get affordable traffic. However, it is also important that it is written well in order to make sure that the readers stay on the website and the conversions are high.

...there really is no secret to article marketing. Providing you...

When I read this, I just had to tease you about it...

There are no secrets, as long as you don't forget this secret...

The real secret of article marketing is to attract readers to your articles and to get readers to take the actions you want them to take after they have read the article...

The article is the pre-sell that doesn't try to sell...

The website in the resource box is where the sales copy is placed...

Nice tips overall... Thanks for posting...

Lol, not a problem and thanks for your contribution. I think many people give up too soon because they don't see results. Remember that if you have chosen a competitive keyword like "finance" as opposed to something smaller like "student credit repair" (which is still a competitive keyword) you are much less likely to see your article at the top of the engines.

It is all about finding a strategy that works for you and sticking to it. I think that's the backbone of internet marketing right there, no matter what market or niche you are in. Also keep in mind that if you want to use Google Adwords to bring in traffic, the adverts wont cost as much if your website is full of solid content.

      I agree with this completely.

The secret sauce, as I like to call it, is what you're saying in those articles and the way that you say it. Anyone can write several paragraphs of words, but a lot of people don't know exactly how to motivate the reader to want to click that resource box link to find out more info, or sign up for their list or read more about a product.

This is where the real money is made with article marketing.

I am surprised that Alexa hasn't yet posted to this thread.

Though I would say, just writing and posting articles does NOT make good sense, yet by sheer brute force, it CAN work!

So, if you find that working for you, go for it.

Antony, great post! Unfortunately, many people seem to have issues with what I have highlighted in bold above. They're looking for shortcuts and loopholes to get around this issue, but at the end of the day I suspect they're expending more time and effort than if they actually wrote the articles the way they're meant to be written!

That's a good point Paul. Anything that turns out to be a bunch of gibberish gets deleted eventually anyway and could give a potential customer/client a very bad impression of your website or business.

Its possible to publish the same article to the top directories/web 2.0 sites and they will very rarely tear them down. The same goes for blasting articles out to hundreds of directories - some of them may get deleted but many of them will stay put. There are proponents for as well as people against this idea, but the point is that this has been tested by many with no adverse consequences. However, I think it is important to use a new article for each stage to maximize results.

As Kianhowe said, you won't get results right away (unless you are lucky with a keyword), but this makes a great long term strategy to bring in regular traffic.

I am not saying that this should be your only means of getting traffic, but it works well on its own and does even better as part of a larger strategy.

      Antony.

I used to write 20+ articles for each product I was promoting. At one point I almost gave up because I posted up approximately 100 articles while only making a few sales.

After that I realised that it wasn't such a bad thing. After a few months I saw my list grow and I decided to create my own product and sell it to the list. Needless to say I didn't look back

Absolutely! That's the most important thing of Article Marketing. People tend to forget that. And just the other day, I corresponded with an Ezinearticles editor. It was clear that they would approve articles that are published on Hubpages as well.

Good information. You should always use a tiered approach to article marketing.

This is helpful for direct traffic as well as backlink power for SEO from your articles.

Create lots of incoming links to strengthen your articles and gain more exposure, try bookmarking them in many social bookmarking websites.

Not at all - if that were true most of the websites currently on page 1 of Google would have been banned a long time ago. As with anything else, use internet marketing tools sensibly. Black hat is more along the lines of using invisible text on your pages that readers wont see but search engines do.

The truth is that getting backlinks is important these days in order progress in the SERPS. However, it is wise to only use quality backlinks (and in moderation) to avoid being "Google slapped". Personally this is only something I have read about so I cant be of much help here. The idea is to just find a solid strategy and stick to it. Of course as "Fun to Write" pointed out, it is how you write the content that really counts.

It's good for creating links just to help add that boost to your top backlink articles, as well as to your website. I have used it to get a few keywords to rank. However, I wouldn't use it as my main means of sending out backlink articles, but rather as part of a strategy as mentioned above. Uploading directly through the top handful of directories will always be the most effective means of getting quality backlinks.

Otherwise it is quite easy to use - although it can be annoying filling in captha boxes for a lot of the blogs/websites that it uploads to. For a slightly more expensive and hands off approach, a website like Build My Rank could be quite helpful in doing the same job.

Not a problem on the tips everyone. Evazk: You have to do some research into the niche yourself as this depends on your preferences and competition. In the end it comes down to deciding what type of internet marketing you want to do, and then performing keyword and other research to decide on the niche that you want to tackle.

For the newbies, just remember to take one niche at a time and build it up until it is profitable, otherwise you will end up with a number of websites that wont do much but cost you a renewal fee each year.

Although, content is the most powerful way to sell your website, on search engines, its not that simple to write a copy that persuades or incites visitors to buy products as soon as they read it. For writing on any niche, its powerful knowledge is required.

    Hi Antony,

    Thanks for the post.

Just for clarification, the first article is only written for your site, and you don't submit it to any directories, right?

And one more question about your second point. Is there any particular reason why you only submit the second article to only the top 5 directories?

    Thanks

Yes, creating unique content for your site and syndicating that article.

Few directories - better ranking of the articles
      Many directories - more backlinks

So, to get the best of both worlds, integrate these two into your strategy.

      Hi,

Sorry for the late reply - I didn't subscribe to this thread. You're correct, always keep the article for your own website unique. As the reader will be on your website it will be written with a more action orientated goal in mind.

Some people have an article for their website and then submit the same article to directories. You will get the backlinks but this is counter productive.

On my second point, you can submit the second article to more directories but I think its best to use the top directories for your main links and the third process for little links and to boost the article directory articles. Not sure if that makes sense but its a sound strategy. Of course you are more than welcome to experiment to see what works best for you.

      Thanks,
      Antony.

    Great post...

    Now, for my questions...

I am using Word Press as my platform for my sites. Each site has at least one Word Press Installation and sometimes 2.

The question is, when I create and place on article on the site, which is better:

-> Post it in the blog as a post
-> Post it to a page as an article
-> Do both and change the title name or some of the content

Also, are there any article submitter services you would suggest. Article Marketer, Submit your articles, etc.?

Also, I have heard Armand Morin talk about the fact that there really is no penalty for duplicate content due to the fact that news articles and feeds are duplicated over and over again...

So what is the reality--- Spin the article or not?

    Thanks in advance,

      Hi Al,

Sorry for my really delayed response again (2 months too late?)! I have now subscribed to this thread in case anyone has any other questions. You ask a few good questions:

      1) I think if the pages are hidden, then there really isn't any SEO advantage as to whether you post the article as a blog post or a page. The main consideration is how you want the content to look in relation to the page - sometimes it looks better as a page rather than a blog post. However, I think for the sake of clarity its best to keep pages as pages, and articles as blog posts.

      2) I submit all of my backlink articles to the top directories (4-6) manually. I also use article marketing robot to send out backlinks to these main directory articles, as well as to my websites. However, you can use a service like Build My Rank which has had good results for others.

      3) I would never recommend spinning an article. I submit the same article to the top article directories and have never been penalized for it. If anything, you can change the title of the article - just remember that the articles are helpful and relevant. If you spin an article enough so that it's not helpful - what's the point in writing it in the first place? And it will also more than likely be removed when spotted.

Article marketing really is simple, but requires a multi faceted approach. In this regard, it isn't "difficult" - but it is time consuming.

      Hope that helps.

      Thanks,
      Antony.

    Hi,

Isn't there a step missing between 3 + 4? i.e. submit to EZA (presumably)? Please advise. Thanks Allen

    3) In the resource box of this article, place one link to your home page, and one link to the original article on your website (using the keyword).

    4) Use a social bookmarking service like IMAutomator.com to bookmark both articles. This helps to get them indexed quickly.

Thanks Anthony for the tips. One thing that needs to be said is the importance of the title for SEO purposes also if the title is not compelling enough it is unlikely to be read.

For sure. I always make it a rule to include the keyword in the title. It's also best to use a 1% keyword density in the article as any more often damages readability; some also believe that Google considers much more than 1% to be "keyword stuffing".
