Linking to your own Youtube videos in your sig file

Hi Warriors,

Just wondering if linking to your own video on YouTube is allowed.

I would like to do just that, but I also don't want to be in violation of the rules. So, what do you think? Right? Wrong? Maybe?

All the best,
Michael

Hmm I don't see how that would be a problem at all!

I'll be waiting as well for a definite answer..

Edit: If they say you can't do it, what about just having your video embedded on a webpage somewhere, just the video?

      Hi Kory,

      Thanks for the input.

I agree, but it does seem like there could be just enough grey area to get a more solid answer first.

This came up before with another member linking to their flippa sales and while I don't remember the exact answer, I think it was OK to do.

Not really the answer you need. I'm sure Paul or Alan will pop in with the official word and that is the only answer that matters.

      Thanks Jason.

I didn't see that thread, but it makes sense that certain sites perform a different function, and therefore wouldn't necessarily break the rules by linking to them in our sigs.

And, yes, a more "official" answer would be cool, but hearing the various reasoning from others is good, too.

Michael, I think the issue here is one of control. YT may host the video, but you have the power to withdraw access. So, in effect anyway, that video's page is yours. Therefore, you linking to it in your sig should be okay.

On the other hand, me (or anyone else) linking to that video would be a whole different kettle of fish...

Michael, this same issue was brought up about linking to Twitter, Facebook
and even a blog you created on a Blogger domain.

From what I understand, as long as you control the content on the site,
          it's okay.

If a mod wants to respond and clarify this, it would clear up any confusion.

            Thanks Steven,

Considering how often I hang out here, it surprises me that I missed every one of those threads. LOL

I was thinking along the same lines, but wanted clarification. Sounds like the consensus is that it's okay.

    Michael,

    I would say maybe...

You could always try it, and the signature cops will find you and report you. Then you can let the mods decide.

It's been stated before that it is perfectly okay to link to a blogger blog, a Squidoo lens or a HubPage. I don't seen any difference with YouTube. It's your content, that's all the really matters.

    What's this thread about?

Oh, we can chew gum in the forum now!

    Cool!

PS, Steven, Don't you know that people don't read the whole thread. They just skim
down to the last post and post a reply based on the Thread Title.

My take is that it would be ok, but why would you want to do it? If you have a video to promote, why wouldn't you embed it on your own site and link to that? Seems pretty common sense to send them to your own property, rather than one owned by Google. Also, there would be no question as to whether it was allowed by the forum or not.

      Fair question.

I actually thought of doing that.

Here's why I chose not to:

      1. To be honest, I didn't feel like taking the extra steps to make a site for the video.

      2. YouTube already has some functionality that is useful. Namely, the ability for people to leave comments. (Yes, I could do this on my own site, but that would be even more work.)

      3. You may not have heard, but a LOT of people hang out at YouTube. That was what made me finally decide to go that route.

So, while I could try sending a bunch of traffic to a page of my own, I figured why not get some of the traffic that YouTube already has. Traffic that may not normally find my video through my normal means of traffic generation.

      All the best,
      Michael
