Sell Or Give Away For Free?

I am currently writing a simple IM ebook & video course with the main intention of developing a list, but I don't know whether to sell it or give it all away for free with the opt-in. I am not worried about the small amount of money that I may or may not make on the sale of the product, I am more concerned with how selling or giving away for free will affect any back end sales that may be generated.

Which is more of a problem to customers--the small price to pay for an IM course, or the perceived worthlessness of a free product? I mean do people take free products as seriously as one that they have paid for? My ebook will be of good quality (compared to many that I have seen) but I have no problem giving it away if it will be taken seriously and put to use. Then again, I would rather charge for it if it means that people will have some motivation to do something with it.

So in a nutshell: Which overall is considered to give better sales--sell or free?

You could do what I've seen some marketers do and that is sell your product for just $1 and as a WSO. This way you offer amazing value and will generate a buyers list as a result instead of a freebie list.

I suggest selling it at a "highly discounted" price and build a targeted list of buyers. If your product is really good, you could assign a high price to it; but for a limited time, they can get it at a much lower price.

Why not give away a few chapters of the ebook and have a link at the end where they can get the full version.

It is really hard to answer your problem accurately without knowing the quality of the product, your customers, your market, etc. I hate to say it but it's really something you are going to need to test yourself. Only then will you know for sure.

I agree with this. This might entice more buyers to buy the product.

If it is a great product then I suggest you don't give it away for free simply because no one respects free products. 99% of the time people will download your product for free, quickly read through parts of it and then leave it dead on their hard drive!

It really does depend on the product you have though. Do you have a good set of follow up emails / backend products that you will email to your list?

It really depends on what you intend to do. If it has valuable content and you give it away for free, this could enable you to get many more opt-ins (and building your list is one of the keys to long-term income in IM).

On the other hand, you could sell it as a low-priced report and build a smaller list of buyers.

What you could do is flesh out your product so that it'd be a no-brainer to buy in the $7-$10 range, and then write another short report and use that as the giveaway for people opting into your list. Make sure your freebie report delivers extreme value, and this will ensure that a high percentage of your list will buy your $7-$10 report when you pitch it to them in a follow-up email.

Give away some free information in your advertisement, offer the first few chapters in exchange for their email address, then at the end of the chapters offer the rest of the book. Then have a follow up email campaign that sells them the book if they havent bought and also send more free info + build a relationship. Make sure you include enticing bullets about what information they will learn in exchange for their email address.

Long term conversion rates from email marketing are always higher than simple one-shot sales.

Your value does NOT go down when you give anything for FREE. Look at the all the top blogs there - Huffington, TechCrunch, Mashable or Copyblogger - Do you think they are good for nothing? NO! NEVER!

On the internet, it just depends on your popularity!

Excellent advice...A price so low that people won't even have to justify their purchase.

This again is a nice advice. But I am NOT sure if this will get more conversions than the $1 rate.

Creating a series of sales pages, one for selling and one for FREE, has always worked for most of the internet marketers out there.

I only give away products for two reasons....First, to generate sales leads...most commonly known as subscribers. If you are using it to build a list then yes, by all means give it away.

The second reason I give stuff away is during ad swaps. But I am only giving someone else products away.

I never give my products away....if it is a short report, I will charge $9.95 to it. Here is the reason why you shouldn't give your products away....you want to train them to have an expectation of buying your products not receiving it for free....

    Thanks for the replies guys.

I was thinking of getting the opt-in first anyway if I sell it, through a squeeze page that will give part of the course away for free along with some stuff that could be used standalone. This would mean that the number of opt-ins would not be affected by whether the rest of the course is free or not.

It seems that a good 'discounted' price would be the most popular choice

      Disclaimer: Haven't tested it yet!

My opinion: An opt in before a sales page actually converts more than a sales page before an opt in...I guess we humans are more inclined to pay for that 'extra' for the actual product.

This sounds like a good plan. Overdeliver in your free giveaway, and then price your product at around $7-$10, and it should convert very well. If they're impressed with your giveaway, pricing your product in this low range should result in lots of sales.

I think everyone pretty much summed it up by saying to give away a portion of your product to get people interested and to opt-in to your list.

On the backend, price it right so that you can over deliver to your list.

I always have a problem pricing my product so what I would do is give it away to a few respected Warriors and ask them how much would they pay for it. Thats usually a pretty good way to get a good price point.

Giving it for free will make it more easier for more people to take their time and get to know your website. it is important that the first 1 minute they spend for your free program gives them good and important information, presented entertainingly to keep them watching until the end of the video and increase the chances of generating better leads.

You can give it away for free here in Warrior Forum(WSO), use it to build your list. Maintain that list and then make money from it. A formula that is very commonly used here!

You can give this product for Free. Just don't write that it's free in the Title of your WSO.

    Hi there!
Giving your valuable content away for free in exchange for email addresses will not only help you build up your list fast, but also build trust with your subscribers. They will think "if he's giving away such good stuff, imagine the quality of the material he's selling!". This will go a long way with the sales of your product. Good luck!
