Search for "article syndication" and you'll find over 5,000 threads on the subject.

Just kidding, but it's true. Basically it is article publishing to multiple outlets such as ezines, websites, and blogs. Quite often such content owners select articles from article directories to republish to their subscribers and viewers. Used effectively, writing articles and submitting to major directories can get your article republished, or syndicated, to these outlets.

"Syndication" means more or less "re-publishing".

When you submit an article to an article directory, you're giving users of that article directory permission to "syndicate" (re-publish) your work on their website and/or in their ezines/newsletters - subject to the terms of service of the directory, which normally mean that people syndicating the article have to include the resource-box and any authors' links in or attached to it.

This is, of course, the purpose of an article directory, and the reason they exist.

Some "article marketers" are writing specifically for syndication, i.e. using article directories as a "stepping-stone" to other/better things, hoping that others will pick up and circulate their work, because this can produce pre-targeted traffic as well as (by comparison to article directory backlinks, which are non-context-relevant and PR-0) some excellent off-page SEO.

This thread will tell you quite a bit more.
