How do I find out who owns a domain name?

Its it possible that the domain expired on you. For I have had this happen a few times my self. Before I got the time to do any actual work on the site I had planed to build the domain had already expired. So I would check with your registar first to make sure it isnt expired before any thing else. Otherwise like what was said above I use domaintools.

Check with the registrar where you purchased it from, after all you do have proof of purchase

You can use WhoIs if they don't have protection for that? Just thinking...
Check the date of your proof of purchase, if it's still valid. (I would guess you bought the domain for a year) then contact the registrar company.

When ? A week..a month.. 10 seconds ? usually domain registrations are for one year.

If you see something else in there, it could be a page set by your registrar by default.

If not, then contacting your domain registrar would be the best option.

I used Who.is: Whois Lookup, Website, Domain Name, and IP Tools - Who.is to get all the info, even if says "private" you can contact them with the email that appaer there

Probably your domain name has been expired and you no longer update it.

I think you havent renewed the domain or someone else has the control panel access of that domain. Please check with the site you have bought the domain from to confirm.

I'm sure if you email and explain what has happened to the original domain registrar, you will get some assistance from them.

Is it possible that your 12 month period of registration has lapsed?

You may also find that the new purchaser has blocked whois from revealing his identity if there's any monkey business going on.

I did what everyone said and went to whois.net and found it. It went out in December 2010, so I screwed up and lost a good domain. Next time I'm going to register my domains for as long as they will allow.

Dang'it....that ticks me off.....live learn i guess.

You can also set up automatic renew with your registrar. It auto charges to your credit card at expiration - provided you update the card expiration date with the registrar.

As another mentioned, the site in your sig doesn't work. That is probably a good thing because affiliate linkes in sigs are forbidden here. They have to go to your own site, which can then send to an affiliate page. Check the rules.

There's no need to wastefully spend...if you set autorenewal on wherever you register the domain, that would protect it from dropping. At worst, your CC info used for renewal could be outdated but you would get an email notifying you of that and would still have plenty of time to renew (you can renew up to 30 days after expiration or longer at most non-GoDaddy registrars, up to 18 days at GoDaddy).

Hopefully you'll learn from this at least to keep your eye on your domains!

Copy and paste the domain name you found to a web browser. That the easiest way to find out if the domain name is taken.

When you buy a domain and enter in your info in the Administrative and Technical contact info, make sure your information is correct, including your email.

Registrars normally email constantly when a domain is expiring. I know Namecheap and Godaddy do. It would be impossible for me not to realize that a domain is expiring.
