4 years later I learn that my writing sucks. I need to do better. I want to learn.

Hello Warriors,

A fairly weird thread here. After doing a lot of content writing for over 4 years, I came to learn yesterday from a recent client that although my sample articles were impressive, my work on her project wasn't up to the mark. I need to do better. I think I need to learn again.

There are genuine reasons as to why this project in question didn't come out that well, but I'd rather leave those reasons (read: self-generated hurdles) behind.

Here's what I think I'm going to do: I'm going to do a lot of writing this weekend. Topics?! Please suggest if possible

Are there any tips you can help me with? I'd appreciate any thoughts/help on this one.

You've been writing for 4 years, you say. I'm assuming you've worked for a variety of clients. Were they unhappy with your work?

Otherwise, if it's just this one woman, that doesn't mean your writing sucks...it just means you weren't successful with ONE project. How many projects have you done and the client was happy?

It sounds like you're magnifying one incident all out of proportion to me.

Your sample articles look fine to me.

Sounds like you just need to step back for a minute and reevaluate yourself. What's the general feedback over the last 4 years? I agree with Tina, you can't let just one or two unfavorable people get you down.

I wouldn't say he's getting down - it looks like he's quite motivated to push forward and improve. Sure, the client could just be impossible to please, but I'm not sure negative feedback should be ignored unless it's really uncalled for. I pushed myself to become a better writer due to a tough client pointing out my bad points.

    Thanks to everyone who replied

Well, I might have had probably one other client (that was around when I started content writing) who didn't like my work. However, this client liked my sample articles and hired me based on what she saw in them. When I delivered the project, she wasn't happy. Nothing wrong with her feedback.

It's my lack of consistency (probably?!) that irked me a bit, and I put this thread up for some pointers/help on how I could do better. Any tips would be helpful.

Well, it sounds like you've only had a handful of dissatisfied clients over the course of 4 years, and that is nothing to be ashamed of. When you're providing any kind of service, it'd be almost impossible in my opinion to achieve 100% customer satisfaction over the long term - while it'd be realistic to shoot for a 90+% rate, expecting total satisfaction wouldn't be very feasible.

It is admirable that you want to improve your writing though, and I find that reading more (especially of material that is related to your topics of interest) will help you a lot, particularly if you feel like you've reached a plateau and would like to improve beyond that.
