What mistakes do newbies make?

As this forum is full of people who have been doing IM successfully for years and months, I thought I should ask this question as I'm just a little more than a month into it. I've heard many people say that IM has been given up by a lot of people who couldn't make money with it and they were all newbies. so according to you experienced marketers, what made them quit? what mistakes they were making?

Expecting things to be handed to them on a plate.

Fear of success or other things stops them from actually taking any action to make a site or do something they need to do.

Some of them show up desperate for emergency cash, and then realize this is not a make money overnight thing unless you have skills already in place.

    Picking the wrong niche.

    Picking the wrong keywords.

Making a site and expecting the money to just roll in, not realizing there is marketing involved in marketing. lol

Too many things to mention. Everyone is different.

But that first answer likely applies to a good majority imo.

I couldn't have said better my self. However another reason why they fail is by chasing one strategy and then another and never fully mastering the one before they move on to the next one.

They also follow all the hyped so called push button instant money scemes. There is no such thing as push button unless you have quite a few bucks to start with so that you can outsource everything. If so then all they would have to do then is simply push the button to buy the hosting and the domain and send out payments to the freelancers. But these so called softwares and other highly hyped methods are a joke but yet they chase them every single time.

Yes, the same thought process needs to happen as if they were creating an offline business, or applying for an offline job.

Some how stepping into the digital realm gives people the idea things are run differently here when in actuality they are not different at all.

Letting your mind limit your ability. I did much better for myself when I believed the world was possible as opposed to when I would obsess over possible outcomes.

The next biggest thing is sticking to one method and making it work. Many methods will work in some capacity, make it happen. It is important to stop following the next big thing or you will become addicted to the chase.

Newbies have too high expectations and quit when they face the truth. They realize that they will need to acquire years of knowledge and throw the towel.

So its almost entirely due to lack of knowledge and when they hit a barrier, they cannot handle it. They don't Love IM enough to just get educated about the "How's" and "How comes".

To succeed, they must be willing to not make a single dime while working up their IM business, and that's where most fail. Without any profits, they quit and many will then blame IM for their downfall.

I just wrote a blog post on what I think one of the biggest reasons for failure is, and that is lack of focus. The internet is so full of everything, for lack of better words, that it is so hard to stay focused on one subject at a time and to really put the time needed into it to make it successful. People who can focus their time and effort and separate the work vs. play mentality can become extremely successful.

Biggest newbie mistake? Without a doubt...

Believe that this IS easy. Yes, it can get easy, but not when you are first starting out. I have no idea why, but many people look at making money online as simply a hobby. I assure you that the most successful people in this industry do not look at it as a hobby, but rather a business.

If you want easy continue going to your nine to five job. Stability is easy. Learning how to correctly run your business, whether online or offline is not easy. It's hard. You make mistakes, sometimes costly ones.

Internet Marketing is no different than anything else and unless you are ready to juice yourself in (see: reading, lots of reading) and learn the ropes from the bottom up you are not going to see the success you dream of.

Well I spend A LOT of time teaching complete newbies about IM so I feel I have enough experience in this to give a good list of reasons why, and these are:
    • Getting Ready to Get Ready - I find this as a very big obstacles to get over. They'll complain about information overload, but what are they constantly doing? Feeding that overload machine day in and day out.
    • Being to Attached to the Outcome - Now come on, how many of us has been in this spot once or twice ourselves? This is one of the main reasons newbies shouldn't start out first with a product, or niche, they are emotionally attached to. Because more than likely you're first shot will fail because you're learning and testing.
    • Negative Emotions - This is another thing that a lot of newbies have to put up with friends and family always killing the dream. What are you doing? Get a real job and earn a paycheck? You're chasing a dream, fantasy land? Do something that's more dependable or stable.
    • Looking for Clarity Before Commitment - This isn't as big an obstacle as others, but one non-the-less. Doesn't matter whether it's looking for that first $100, or even $1. This one is also closely tied to "Being to Attached to the Outcome" in the beginning don't worry so much about what the outcome is, just work on getting it right and understanding WHY you're doing things
    • Seeking Perfection - As odd as it sounds, a newbie seeking perfection in an industry they don't know nothing about and are learning, it still happens. Again, learn the basics of what you're doing and understand why you're doing them before seeking to perfect something or attain a certain outcome.
    • Being Productive vs Taking Action - Here's another one we get into and sometimes without even knowing it. You can spend all day being productive but yet still not accomplish anything! It's the old saying: Actions speak louder than words.
    • How and When Questions before Asking Why? - This is a BIG ONE here on WF, and most other IM forums. How can I get more traffic? When will I make 100k, How long will it take for me to ?, you get the point. What you NEED to be asking is Why are you doing a particular thing? Answer the Why questions and the How and When will answer thenselves.
If you've read this fare and have analyzed everything said completely you should come to one very important conclusion which is the theme of how I teach students,

"YOU DON'T HAVE TO GET IT RIGHT, YOU JUST NEED TO GET IT GOING!"

Awesome - thanks so much for your intel - I am new to this but not web site creation. I make close to $100 a month from Google Ad-sense (so my free content brings traffic) alone but my Affiliate Marketing is bringing me in nothing. Any tips or tricks for websites who get traffic but fail at affiliate marketing?

Most common downfall for newbie is they want instant result. IM business is just like any off line business. It can be fast if you hit all the right buttons but it can be slow if you are not. Human nature is to get instant gratification but unfortunately for most they won't get it.

One of the common mistakes that newbies make is due to information overload, where this tends to cause them to attempt implementing several methods/systems at once. This lack of focus typically results in very little actually getting completed, with the newbie ending up frustrated and discouraged due to the lack of results.

Slacking off is the biggest one. I've observed many people (and many former small business owners) who do virtually no work the whole day. It's no wonder that they don't achieve much.
Of course, there are other things (e.g. persistence, making sure your marketing stands out) but just that should put you ahead of many people.

Not taking action is the biggest reason I've seen.

They read too much, buy too much garbage and spend more time dreaming about how great it would to be to have success, then to action get their hands dirty and take action. They fall for the gimmicks and short term tricks. They think old stuff isn't any good. They think only the newest trick will make them money instead of going back to the basics that the real big producers do daily. They buy anything that fulfills their immediate want instead of doing things they need to do. They see a big, (usually fake), screenshot that is supposed to be "proof of income" and get blinders on to the fact that they're being taken.

I've seen a lot over the years and the ones who succeed are the ones who just do it. The successful ones aren't afraid to try. They're not afraid to fail and they learn from their mistakes. They take a method and make it their own. They love big niches where there's lots of competition because they know they just need a small percentage of the overall take to make a lot of money. They solve problems that a hungry market is dying for. Those guys get it.

A lot of people think IM = kickin back on a beach sipping a pina colada while some bikini clad babe gets busy with the sun cream.
The truth is it's a business - a business that might work or might not - like any other.

A lot of people think (like i did) I want to get into IM, but you wouldn't say 'I want to open a shop' You would know what type of shop, where it would be, who it would serve etc.

If you come into this blind there's a whole lot of the brown stuff to wade through and some folks didn't pack a paddle

Oh yeh - Take action - things get done quicker

Everyone has already answered your questions. So, now you should:

Study. Read many posts in the Warrior forum, so that you may learn how the internet works and how you’ll be able to make money online.

Here is a thread with the best posts on the Warrior forum:

    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-internet-marketing-discussion-forum/283644-list-best-threads-warriorforum-updated-12-13-10-a.html

Begin using free tools, without spending your money before knowing where to invest. Create Blogger blogs, Squidoo lenses and Hub pages. However, have in mind that free platforms have many rules that you must follow, and you can lose your work if something unexpected may happen or they may think that you are being dishonest, etc. Don’t completely rely on free platforms to build your business, and don’t depend on them for your income. Use them for having an additional income, and basically for learning how you can sell your products online.

Here is a lens that teaches you how to easily create many Squidoo lenses in a short period of time:

    http://www.squidoo.com/passive-income-website-traffic-squidoo-beginners-guide

After studying everything very well, and when you’ll feel that you really know what you are doing, then look for your niche, create your website, a paid Wordpress blog, create your own products, etc. Never spend a cent online if you are not sure if this is going to bring you positive results.

Prepare a very smart business plan before ‘taking action’. Wisdom is better than regret.

    All the best!

There is a lot of work to be done unless your flat out lucky and hit the right thing instantly..

IMO IM has got easier to do because of all the software available and all the good info out there from a lot of dedicated people..

The main problem is again IMO, the net is getting saturated...

To make a lot of money you have to think outside the box and keep catching the waves..

Personally, I'm still a newbie, but I remember a couple months before that I simply just didn't know where to go and what my options were - I felt suffocated by sheer mass of information on the web and even this forum! I would recommend for a newbie to try a one on one course of their choosing that has had many good replies - This will help you at least put you on some kind of track and moving in some direction rather than stepping one way, then two steps back in every direction there is.

Thank you everyone who replied. Everybody made valid points. There were so many spot on answers that if I had quoted them all in a reply then it would have become a very long post.

I know the things which you guys have said are true because I have experienced them myself. Believing it to be easy, slacking, changing strategies, changing products etc etc. I've had all those moments. I'm sure many other new members here will agree with me as well. But I'd like to add that most of us fall for the trap of believing it is easy because of the bloggers who create this image among their readers that they're making 100s of thousands of dollars very easily. Before joining this forum, I used to follow blogs of various internet entrepreneurs and honestly, all of them just love the word "easy." I know they all just do it to make people buy products from their emails but the credit of creating this misconception goes to them.

Nevertheless, I understood that it takes work after watching a very informative video by Mark Ling where he explained both on-page and off-page SEO factors. And I try to keep working my way but slacking is still one of my qualities.

Anyway, I've made 2 sales without a google ranking so far.

The biggest mistake for newbies is to give up! Period! And do not treat IM as a real business. The come and look at IM as an hobby, something they can hide behind the computer screen, do a few mouse click and get money in the bank.

I can assume all newbies who gave up IM never treat IM seriously. If they found they didn't earn much, they would think that's becase of their luck. They have the mentality of buying a lotto ticket.

If you are serious about IM and make your name stand out, never give up, you will find your own success strategies.

    * Starting out with too hard niches.

    * Keep working with their projects forever and dont put it online... Put it online and keep working with it instead.

    * I've seen people buy dedicated servers before they even started because they think they would make so much money right away.
Just start out with virtual hosting and upgrade if you need it!

      Hi Raindance,

Newbies fail because they use WRONG strategies, for example:

      - They set unrealistic and not achievable goals.

      - They look for overnight success.

      - They focus on "making money" instead on GROWING their business.
You have to FOCUS on your business if you want to make money online.

      - They DON'T make market research and this is ESSENTIAL.

Here are some of the mistakes I made when starting out:

-Bought everything and anything. Thought I was going to get rich buying $7 eBooks.

-Jumping from one thing to another.

-Quiting on a project WAY too early.

-Spending too much money on outsourcing when I should have done it myself the first few times until income started coming in.

Im sure that I can think of more later but my list was pretty long.
