Some questions about utilizing public domain content for creating & marketing info products

I have been looking into the possibility of utilizing public domain content to put together information products - and would appreciate answers to the following questions that I have below:

1) Are public domain books harder to sell, because they are not written by some well-known "industry guru" or "expert" that many people would recognize today? How do people typically get around this barrier?

2) How do you usually obtain testimonials that are necessary for establishing social proof in the sales letter for public domain content...especially since you are technically not the "author" of the content?

3) How much time does it usually take to find, assemble and then sell public domain info products?

4) How much money do people usually make who sell public domain content on the Internet?

Thanks.

    1) There is no major difference you are not the author you are the affiliate the one recommending a product I suggest you to look at how other sales page domain book affiliate pages and see how much traffic and conversions they have and just copy what they are doing if people like there method they will also like your modified version.

    2) Well think about it logically how does anybody get a testimonial 1 they get it from the author or 2 they make a section in there website that says add a testimonial + you can also if you have a list email people that bought and ask them if they would be willing to give a testimonial.

    3) There really isn´t a set time it all depends on the seller and his approach on selling the product. blog, video, emails.

    4) With the information you gave I can´t really give you a price range but I suggest you look at the price of the product, traffic, conversion rate. and then modify any or all of the three to increase how much money you make. if you have low traffic try making or buying backlinks to increase your ranking. if your conversion rate is low try making a video along with the testimonials people want to see a real person add an image of yourself that will help a lot even though you are not the author. And as far as product if you increased the traffic and conversion rate and still have no sales just do the exact thing you have for this product to another one.

Well I hope you found this usefull Edgardo

The same way you would with any product. Good copy, good presentation, smart target marketing.

However, there are thousands of public domain books with authors who can stand on their own merit. Consider leveraging the authors name or history.

    2) How do you usually obtain testimonials that are necessary for establishing social proof in the sales letter for public domain content...especially since you are technically not the "author" of the content?
The same way you would with any product. Get a testimonial from an actual user who really liked the product.

    3) How much time does it usually take to find, assemble and then sell public domain info products?
    There is no average.

I could do a search right now and within 1 minute have the entire text of a marketable public domain book.

How long it takes you to turn that into a product depends on how you plan to distribute it.

Are you going to record it as an audio book? Compile it into a PDF and format it? Publish it as a physical book? Or create a derivative work with extensive additional content, illustrations, supplemental materials etc.

    4) How much money do people usually make who sell public domain content on the Internet?
Forgive me for being a bit hard... but this is the kind of question that if you are asking you really need a reality check.

Selling pubic domain content on the internet is not a salaried job. Its not like some common position in the corporate world where there is an average salary.

There is no usual in most entrepreneurial activities.

How much you make is 100% up to you and no amount of money that anyone else has made will be useful in estimating what your probable success could be.

For example. Walt Disney. He made millions. He also lost millions. But his company eventually became a multi billion dollar empire. Yes... using public domain stories.

There are so many possible varied business models on the internet using public domain its impossible to come up with some average.

You could sell ebooks, physical on demand books, online memberships, audio books, podcasts, educational programs, you can licensed your products, sell derivative works published by actual publishing houses... and yes even score movie deals.

Ever hear of Pride Prejudice and Zombies? There is a movie in the making.

    ...

The fastest source will be online texts found in many public domain repositories.

The most unique source will likely be scarce or rare books you buy from thrift shops or on ebay and have scanned.

Since you are interested in this subject buy this book immediately:

The Public Domain by Stephen Fishman - Nolo

That knowledge can make you a lot of money... but better yet it will guide you in the due diligence process.

    1) No
    2) Give review copies to a few people and ask for their honest opinion
    3) Finding can be minutes - the rest depends on your work rate. Might be a day, week or a month....YOU DECIDE
    4) Can be thousands...can be nothing. Some people don't take the right actions to get things to market.

    Good luck

An industry guru or expert will find it easier to sell simply because they have a reputation, which is an important factor when people consider buying something. How do you get round it? By marketing cleverly - good sales copy, finding a new way into a market, offering a good deal/price on the book - you can build a reputation yourself.

Bear in mind that building a reputation will generally speaking be easier if you are creating something new rather than rehashing public domain material. Of course there are exceptions to this rule.

In a few of our info products we have used public domain as part of our content, but not all.

So, for example - two chapters in one of our ebooks is cleaned up public domain content along with the remainder of the book being a combination of our own and a partner's content.

That way we still claim the majority of the work as our own (because it actually is).

Another book we wrote, we used a public domain work and then interviewed some current experts on the topic of the original book to provide extra value, include some audio content and update the material a little as well as personalizing it.

Just a thought on how you may want to use it a little differently.
