"I'm An Internet Marketer..."

Hi Warrior,

When your family members, relatives or friends ask you, "what's your job?"

What would be your answer?

Here's my situation:

When I said "I'm an Internet Marketer", they're totally BLANK!

And I need to explain this, that, this, that...

They replied, "Ohhh.... but still BLANK!"

Anyone has such experience? Would you like to share it out with Warriors?

    I'm pretty new at internet marketing and I don't have a job right now So I can say I'm in the same boat. Someday here I'll be able to say it's my full time job so! Till that day Good luck!

    I say I am an e-commerce consultant and they are like.. WOW, aren't you too young for that?

    Anyhow I never say I am an IMer... coz that is completely out of vocabs for most people around.

    I used to tell people I did data entry for a private corporation (which isn't necessarily a lie).

    It's a short answer and it doesn't seem to confuse anyone.

    I guess it depends on how much detail you want to go into. Granted, any one of us could give you the same blank stare at the catch all phrase "Internet Marketer". It really does not answer, "What's your job?"

    Are you "in marketing"?
    Do you sell information products?
    Do you help people who need to know how to set up a website?
    Do you help people who have a website learn how to make money with it?
    Are you a writer? a computer programmer? blogger? product reviewer? etc. etc. etc.

          I'm still kinda playing around with describing what I do. I've tried a few approaches, most recently culminating in me spending 15 minutes explaining to my mom what an ebook was. I usually vary it depending on the person I talk to. If it's somebody who already is familiar with business, then I may explain it in detail. But for layman purposes, I usually say I have an online business, and if the person asks what kind, I just say I build websites and sell stuff online.

          I try to remember that unless someone is already very internet savvy, most of the stuff they hear about the internet is filtered through what they hear in the media, so I try to describe it in media type terms I think they'd understand.

            My quick answer to the question is this:

            I own the oldest Internet Radio station for the Independent Musician, (which is true).

            I recently added e-commerce to the site and an affiliates program so I could make money doing what I love.

            The next question they ask is; How did you get started doing Internet Radio? I respond with; I found myself un-employed prior to the Internet bubble burst and was taking my time looking for a start-up company I felt offered an opportunity like Yahoo. Then came the burst and being self-trained I couldn't find a job with computers so I started designed web sites. Potential clients would ask to see sites I designed so I built 440MUSIC.COM as my first example. It worked and I started getting clients then 3 years ago with point and click web design programs and everybody and there brother designing web site I couldn't make a decent living any more. I started on changing 440Music to a full commerce site and in December 07 I had the system ready to go. Recently I added an affiliates program with the hope of finding Internet Marketing Professional to help me grow to the next level.

            Ok long winded answer but that answers the question from friends and relative and then get them back to the blank stare so I can get off the subject and on to what are they doing.

              I'm glad to read that some people are having the same issue as me. I'm 23 and all my friends are either in college or just got out, and I'm pretty sure they all think I'm a lazy bum who needs to get a "real job" (little do they know pretty soon I'll be making more a month than they make in a whole year hehe)

              But yes, I am defiantly familiar with the blank stare lol

    I like the blank looks! I say that I am into e-commerce and affiliate marketing. Most people I know have no idea what I mean and just look at me with a smile and others want to know some details but I think it's funny the reactions!

    This is hilarious. I always tell them that I am an internet marketer too. Then they give me all these strange looks and ask, "what the heck is that?" Then they understand when I tell them that I sell products online. The funny looks are classic.

They apparently thought that the only way you can market online is to spam people with e-mail. I now tell people that I build websites and work to get them near the first results of the search engines so I can make money off of the websites. That usually is sufficient, and than they ask if I can teach them how to do that.

        haha yeah, I love the assumption that the only way to make money online is by scamming people, selling useless products or spamming everyone. So annoying.
