Market Research!

Ok,

I have to admit....I thought twitter was a joke and a useless means to provide any substantial substance. Twitter has been around since 2006 (I think) and I just got involved a little over 2-1/2 weeks ago.

I was sick and tired of hearing about it.

So after much deliberation I decided to embrace it and harness the "Supposed" Social Power it's advocates professed. I decided to jump in with both feet and give it a go!

No need to post results, stats etc here....as there are countless other threads about those in here.

BUT...for Serious marketers who are doing niche research...Twitter is extremely powerful.

As you know with any type of sales and marketing you should speak less and listen more. More importantly ask targeted questions. Obviously you need to build a follower base and the more the better, however even if you only have 20 followers you can still cultivate crucial information.

Of course you need to have conversations with your followers to establish a connection but periodically you should be asking pointed questions.

Over the past week in addition to jabbering at the mouth on Twitter, I was able to gather extremely valuable information pertaining to different projects that I am working on....this is information that would have other wise taken me many more hours to research elsewhere. I was able quickly identify specific problem area's from my follower base in which I could provide the solution.

The Twitter crowd loves to Tweet and when asked something pertaining to a current event, particular problem, themselves etc...they are quick to give an opinion.

You follower base, as it grows will become diverse and allow you to gather a true sampling of consumer behaviors, likes and dislikes. This is Essential when developing a product...and can also offer opportunities to discover emerging trends.

Over a 7 day period I asked the same question surrounding a particular niche 8 times in 8 different ways....this is one example of many tests i am conducting with Twitter.

Through this Q&A session i cultivated over 40 responses out of over 120 that I deemed valid. These answers provided a good snap shot of what the market was looking for. This was achieved by simply being low key and throwing in a bit of humor here and there.

I then was able to take that data and cross reference it with other research....and continue on with product development.

The point of the story, many marketers look at twitter as a Link Bait Playground. And I will admit that I have inserted my fair share. I, like many others am still trying to balance everything out with this platform. And posting a link here and there is still OK so long as it provides value.

But...if you start True conversations with your follower base surrounding a specific topic or niche...you can continue to grow that conversation ...evolving it and tailoring it to your niche research.

Additionally there are many others who may be watching the conversation without ever chiming in....but they are interested. This is another point. Watch the other conversations that people are having. Spend some time and do nothing but watch people chat...you will be amazed at what you can find out...if you pay attention.

Not only are you making new friends but you are getting a treasure box of golden information....that can make you some money....go develop your product or create your new blog about it and then come back and say "hey...check out this post i just made about xyz that we have been chatting about"

....if it offers value...they will leave a comment on your blog, may subscribe to your blog etc....not to mention your information will be more specific and offer more value. This is much better than making a blog post and then posting in Twitter a link saying ..blah blah blah.

Just some thoughts i wanted to share..how about you? What techniques other than simply posting links are you incorporating to cultivate information, followers etc?

Highest Regards,
Sean

[EDIT] -Another pointed question asked before I made this post....19 responses. Now i will go back and harvest more information with more pointed questions. When I am finished i will more than likely receive another 19 answers which will help my marketing efforts

Twitter is great for market research, building lists, and making
and driving traffic to your offers.

I love Twitter; especially since it's 100% free and so damn easy
      to use.

To me, the best part of Twitter is the fact that I can use it as a launch platform to distribute my content to a bunch of different platforms. For example, my Twitter account populates my Facebook profile. It also populates my blog. My blog populates my Facebook as well. It also populates my LinkedIn profile.

Further, I have my Utterli account integrated with my Twitter account. So now, I can make one cell phone call and populate five audiences with my content. Brilliant!
