What is the best way you make an upsell?

We all know that the first sale is not where the money is. So what is the #1 best way you make your upsell?

For me I do bunch of methods over the year, but wanted to get some new ideas to add from the Warrior's. thanks in advance.

    I'm not a big fan of upselling at the point of the sale, or just after.

    I prefer to delay upsell's, and offer them when the time is right.

    I find the best time to upsell is as soon as they start seeing results from the first product/service.

    Let's say I was running an SEO service, as soon as I got a client's site onto Page 1 on Google I would immediately send a personal e-mail making another offer.

    Timing is extremely important when selling, and is something that's often overlooked.

      Im with oneplusone here. I dont like to upsell anything until after the initial transaction is complete.

      I usually send a follow up a few days later, after they have had time to digest my product a bit. Then I offer them something else to help make their lives easier.

      Im sure Im leaving money on the table by not hitting them up when they are in the buying mood but when I buy something, I hate going through 3 or 4 upsells just to get what I bought. So I try to treat my customers the way I would like to be treated when buying something.

    Well the more traditional way is to offer a additional bonus BEFORE the initial sell. But the recent trend which I like is to offer after they pay through pay pal.

    Now lets talk PRICE. this is where I think a lot of people make a mistake and piss off a lot of people at the same time. You don't need to offer them PREMIUM high end stuff as much as complementary products and or services.

    Remember McDonalds is the number one seller of upsales. The "would you like fries with that" question made them a billion dollars their first year.

    If you sell a $47 item offer a cool item for only $14-$27 more that compliments the initial sell.

    I hope people respond to this one I would be interested in others strategies (that work of course) as well.

    The most effective upsell I have had is to offer a complimentary product during the purchase process at a discounted rate, that can easily be added to their order.

    I use OTOs, but I wouldn't use them to sell a "better" version of the product that my customer has just purchased.

    Instead, I'd sell something that will make their life easier.

    So if I sold a guide about writing killer articles that generate sales, then maybe I'd sell a piece of software as a OTO that submits your articles to hundreds of directories.

    I wouldn't personally sell a piece of software like that since most of the article submitters are crap, but you get the idea.
