product creation better than affiliate?

From what I gather product creation is easier than being an affiliate, simply because you save the time driving the traffic. And by the use of leverage you can build a list of very targeted customers. Does anyone agree?

    Well yes and no.

Affiliate Marketing is awesome because you don't have to create a product, sales copy, deal with support etc.

Affiliate Marketing sucks because you can't leverage it as much as product creation.

Product Creation is awesome because you are in control, you can have affiliate generate sales for you etc.

Product Creation sucks because you have to create the product, write a sales copy, worry about the delivery and support, convince affiliate to promote for you etc.

So that proves both business model have their pros and cons. You have to weigh it out for yourself

I'd have to say product creation as you are building a long term asset. Take a CB product for example once you have gone through the launch its on auto pilot while other affiliates market it for you. You are leveraging their efforts, time and money.

Product Creation vs Being an Affiliate is like asking would you rather own a business or work for one? Also product creation is the fastest way to build your list and your own customer base, instead of somebody else's. However your going to want to affiliate for things sometimes as your not always going to have a new product to sell. Creating products and being an affiliate is the real answer, do both.

Well said, Mo. Product creation brings with it a whole new set of issues, so I'd never call it "easy", especially if you're wanting to scale it up and do the huge product launches that you see everywhere - those are never easy, and take months of preparation and planning to pull off well.

Each business model has its own set of pros and cons, and you'll just have to weigh them all and decide which one best suits your inclinations and skill set.

I like testing markets with affiliate products not so much by sales but by signups. If I get some significant signups I know that creating a product is a good idea.

      Very good take on this

I like affiliate marketing a lot when it comes to promoting things fast.

But I do believe that sometimes, the BIG money comes when you have your own products

Personally, I think it's easier only if you have a passion for it.

There's no right or wrong. It all depends on what you think will suit you the most. Pick a model you like and stick to it.

  • If you want to maximize your income you need both. Good luck.

PS: Product creation is not as hard as people claim. I have been creating at least 3 or 4 per year not as hard as people say it is and I have one with 0 refunds with hundreds of sales only 8 hours to create it.

Not sure if your mindset is correct if you are thinking of things in terms of what's "easiest". Both, you should be pouring at your heart and soul to provide true value to an end users. Of course, the only way many online can succeed is by seriously cutting corners--lying/deceiving their audience.

      Great words!

It's likely if you get involved in either process it will eventually lead to the other. My guess, and it may be off, is that more people start with affiliate marketing. But the skills you pick up there will be useful in promoting a product of your own if you create one. Both, though, are work if they are done seriously. --Mike

I think both have advantages and disadvantages.

Product creation can be great, because you don`t need to deal with SEO and getting traffic to your site, but I think it`s quite hard to create a product with all videos, sales letters, screen proofs and it can take a long time do create one. Not to mention all the support and refunds you have to deal with..

Being affiliate is good, because you have the product already created waiting for you to promote it. It takes much less time to start but getting traffic, making SEO and making sells can be realy difficult and can take a lot of time and work.

I think both is hard and take quite a lot of time. It`s on you to decide what you would like to do and what you think you are better in.

It's because of these reasons that, I believe, affiliate marketing is a natural, logical, course of action for many who are just beginning online. Because of this, the competition, I believe, is insanely competitive. It's not for the faint of heart.

On the other hand, product creation isn't just about product creation. Once you make the product, how are you going to sell it? You need to have some skill in writing effective sales copy, networking/getting quality affiliates. Because of all that's required, I don't believe that many are at least initially attracted to product creation.

Also, some of the biggest marketers online started in what I've seen to be a bit of a natural progression of IM. People can certainly start their IM career anywhere, however, like, at Shoemoney...the launch of his career essentially begin through crushing it on Adsense...then, he naturally progressed into other things as he became more recognized and gained a following.

  • Affiliate marketing relies on one of the most difficult tasks in Internet Marketing: targeted traffic generation. There's nothing easy about that.

Especially when there are so many people in the world attempting to try their hand at it. I just think the barriers to entry of actually doing affiliate marketing are so low that it makes it immediately appealling to so many people. Now, whether they are successful or not...that's a whole different story.

Product creation may seem quite easy but not to an average newbie.

Remember that your first product may make or mare your internet marketing experience.

If you come out with trash and succeed in selling it to a lot of folks online, you may be surprised that many wouldn't touch your second better product with the longest poles.

So it is very vital that you take time and learn what works and what doesn't.

Actively taking part in affiliate marketing will enable you to closely watch what others are doing right so that when you come out with your own product you add values to your potential customers.

Spot on! Product creation isn't as easy as it is made out to be. It is not a matter of "build it and they will come" and nothing about it is "auto-pilot".

Also, without knowing how to actually write or create a great product you will be sadly disappointed when people refund on you, blow up your mailbox with complaints and questions or just refund because they can.

Without knowing how to drive traffic your product will wither and die because you should be your number on affiliate. You should care more about your product and know more about your product than anyone else.

I agree that affiliate marketing is a great first step in IM or MMO. There you will learn the basics and naturally your business should progress to include product creation but only once you know how to drive traffic at will.

Who are you creating product for and what product will you create? The creative process is what I find most difficult. Already done for you with affiliate sales. It doesn't matter which because you'll have to drive traffic anyway.

Are you a true expert in anything? Do you have training in anything specific? Extensive experience in something specific?

If the answer is "no" then don't bother creating products. Your products have to be compelling and offer expertise. If you have no more knowledge / skill than your readers your sales will be slim.

Don't forget that as a product creator you are also "involved" in affiliate marketing as you will need a bunch of affiliates going out there and promoting your product.

So, it's not a bad idea to get some experience of affiliate marketing - promoting and driving traffic to someone else's product - before launching your first. Then you will have gained the know-how to produce the infrastructure and the tools to help your affiliates do a great job.

Why don't you try writing an eBook and selling it? Its not that easy unless you have a huge subscriber base and can write compelling content.
Yes of course having your own product is far better as long as it sells
