What makes people buy e-books or other electronic products?

Hey guys,

I have written an E-Book (more like a Special Report - 9 pages) that offers a very detailed method of getting resolutions to problematic products or services purchased from companies. I have a service listed in the last 2 paragraphs of the Report, but, have no other product or service to offer with it. I was hoping to sell it for around $9 or so.

What makes an E-Book sell? For instance, if someone comes to my site, what is the thing that causes most prospects to buy the product?

Tell them why they NEED your book.

A video sales letter helps too

Your copy and graphics have a lot to do
    With it as well.

    The combination of:

    1) A product that directly addresses the desires of a hungry crowd.

    2) Sales copy/presentation that does an effective job convincing the prospect that his desires will be met.

#1 is based upon understanding the market, and what they want but, presumably, aren't finding.

#2 is based upon things like knowing the ins and outs of the product, and how, specifically, they address the concerns in #1...upon social proof, such as testimonials or case studies...upon the ability of your copy to get, and keep, the prospect's attention long enough for you to get the rest of your sales message across...upon the nature of your offer, which must be compelling enough that the prospect realizes he'd be a fool not to buy, right now...upon language that shows the prospect, in very vivid terms, how he or she will benefit from having this particular problem solved, once and for all...and upon clear and direct instructions for what to do in order to get the product from you ASAP.

      Hello,

In this particular case, I would try to get some great testimonials.

"Using the methods in this book I found out a way to get General Motors to provide me cars for life because of a problem in the steering on my xyz"

"I cannot thank xxx enough for this book. It has changed my family's life. We were in poverty due to banking errors. Now the bank has to provide a no-pay credit card to me, my wife, and five children for the next 5 years. Life is good."

      etc.

OK, you get the point, I'm sure. I'd look for good testimonials before buying a book like this.

      Hope this helps,

      Best regards,

      Gren.

Only if your product is not targeting women... unless it's a fitness product promising to make women LOOK like those gals. Otherwise, it could be a turnoff :p

      Jeremy,

Not to chip away at copywriter's business, but you may want to give it a shot yourself first. Head on over to Barnes and Noble and pick up a book about writing sales copy and see if you can craft something that is effective.

Having a sales letter written can have pricing that is all over the board: several hundreds to thousands.

Or, head over to Barnes and Noble, look at a few books, get the names of a couple, then ask your local library to order them for you. If you end up liking the books or if you think you'll refer to them often, then I would recommend investing in one. Might save a little money that way and at the same time guarantee that your money is well-spent when you do decide on one to buy. I have a family member who ordered a copy writing book from the library, and he was glad he did. Sometimes you can also get copy writing books from the library that are no longer for sale elsewhere that still have great advice.

There's no one answer to this.

There are people writing sales letters for a hundred bucks. Most of them will suck, but occasionally, someone in that group will hit a home run. You can burn through dozens of such writers before you find somebody competent, or you can get lucky and hit it right away.

There are people writing sales letters for $500-1000 bucks a go, many of whom are very talented, and some of whom are still hacks and template writers. Your odds of a getting a good promotion for someone in that ballpark is certainly higher. That's why God invented testimonials and publicly available feedback.

There are guys who ask $10k-50k and beyond. They will almost all uniformly create a promotion that crushes it for you. But do you have the capital? The market to justify the expense? The confidence in your product? The ongoing backend marketing plan? The capacity for risk inherent in shelling out a big pile of dosh for an uncertain outcome?

Best thing you can do is set a budget in your mind, and then start looking. Do your due diligence and try your best to make sure you're working with someone with a track record of success and customer satisfaction.

Jeremy, you may want to give it a shot yourself first. Since your product is priced on the lower end of the scale, it may not make much economic sense to hire a good copywriter that is going to charge at least several hundred dollars (this could run into the thousands if you find a high-end copywriter).

It's hard to give you an exact process on how to do this, but I think probably the best way to go about it is by observing several salesletters in your niche that grab your attention, and then modeling (not copying) what they do. Take your time in doing this, and write and rewrite it at least several times until it becomes something you feel is good. Then get it critiqued by someone you trust - by now you should have a halfway decent salesletter, if you've put some effort into it.

Cheap means that it does not contain that much usefull information, lots of people will buy and you will get bad reviews at one moment.
High price less people willl buy that product.

Good marketing. The product itself, the sales copy, the layout and design of your sales page, following up with people who didn't purchase immediately via autoresponder, proof that the service can deliver the results you say it can, relevant bonuses. Basically does the sales copy convince visitors to the page that your product will solve their problem or help them get something that they want. This assumes that the people seeing your offer are targeted and predisposed to have a need for your service in the first place.

How much credibility do you think one loses because the website, with the sales copy, is on a .blogger or .wordpress type page? In other words - if the website isn't myspecialreport.com, but, instead of myspecialreport.blogger.com, do you think I lose credibility?

    Thanks.

Look for an ebook on how to write sales copy. Add some real testimonials (get testimonials by giving the book to a handful of people and ask them to write a testimonial for you). And then you can sell your book on your own site and on other sites like Tradebit and Amazon. After that just market the heck out of it. A list helps get the word out pretty fast. Ebooks have been around a while, but with the arrival of e-readers like the Apple iPad and the Kindle they are sure to almost all but replace paper books completely.

I'll take a shot at answering your questions from a personal perspective:

    1. Convenience - I can download and read it NOW. Last night, I bought Seth Godin's new book, "Poke the Box" as an ebook... and have finished reading it already. Saved me a trip to the bookstore, and a wait for the edition to hit the shelves.

    2. Cheap - the ebook is often cheaper than a print equivalent, though not always

    3. Desire - I'm a fan of Seth's and buy just about everything he writes. With other subjects, it's a desire for information or a solution to a pressing problem.

    4. Ubiquity - if your ebook is offered via the Kindle store, make sure it is accessible worldwide. I badly want to read 'Curation Nation' but the Kindle ebook is NOT available in India/Asia-Pacific region. Ebooks can be delivered EVERYWHERE at very little cost.

    Hope this helps.

    All success

Off course the following things : -

    1) The main contents it contains
    2) How well they are mentioned to show that they exist
    3) Kind of presentation
    4) Costing and affordability
    5) how well it can connect with the people or customers who come to buy

    Thanks

Answer these two questions, and your other answers will all fall into place....

Where do people with these problems go to complain and seek answers? Can you get either an advertisement, link, or content placed in those places?

If you can find the people seeking the answers you are providing, then it is likely they will buy your product, ASSUMING THE ANSWER IS NOT EASY TO FIND FOR FREE.

You mention a $9 price tag. How expensive are the products and services your ebook offers to help resolve problems with? If it is a high ticket item, you should test your ebook at a variety of price points. $7, $9, $17, $27, $37, $97...Do not get crazy about watching the number sold, but focus on the return on investment at each level including the value of having them on an email list.

    As far as copywriters...

I'm shocked no one suggested you head into the Copywriting section of the Warrior Forum and start reading.

There are great discussions and examples of copywriting available. You can find people who will critique your copy for you. You can even find people to write your copy.

The need for it will make a person buy the product. As they say, a hungry niche is of course easier to satisfy than just a seasonal niche. It is advisable that you put in campaigns that will bring in highly targeted potential buyers for your product. Dont waste your money on getting a million visitors instead focus on getting your site seen by people who will be really interested in what you offer. Andrea
