Building Lego and IM have some common ground

My son age 5 wanted my help to put together a 600 piece lego police truck this afternoon and to be honest I wanted to get back on the forum to see how my W.S.O was performing.

When I started to follow the directions I was trying to skip ahead and would arrive at points that just weren't looking right so I would have to start entire sections again.
As I thought about what was happening it kind of reminded me of my early efforts online and the fact that I wanted to do the big creative colorful stuff and hit publish on my software program.

It took me a few failed attempts to realise that by laying all the pieces out in there correct sections.(or doing some keyword research thoroughly for a niche).

And then by visualising the finished product and calmly enjoying the process and not rushing it.(building a detailed mindmap with a proper plan for my websites).

With my lego building I only had the memories of what I had done as a five year old but with my online business I actually had a fantastic mentor who gave me some terriffic detailed advise early on.

Newbies please note.

I now look back and think about my approach in the beginning and just shake my head.
A business that could pay me an entirely automated income whilst I slept and had to do some careful research, planning and put energy into my online offerings? What a strange concept, why had I thought for a second this business would be such a breeze.

Now that I have put focus and energy into my product offers suddenly my customers began emailing me great little messages of appreciation and long heartfelt letters saying how much they had enjoyed my products.

Just like the Lego police truck when I decided to concentrate and really be in the moment suddenly I had the admiration of my beautiful little blond haired blue eyed son and he started to say things like dad your really good ar lego aren't you.

I suppose the purpose of my rambling post is two fold, and although I would like to reach out to new marketers online and encourage them to take their time with projects and make them the best that they can be.I also want to stress that although I have to work late and work early to avoid having a five year old boy and gorgeous little curly headed three year old girl upset with me for being on the laptop.

IM is important but life is the main game.

I can always hit save and return to the HP laptop but a can't hit a pause button on my kids and every second that I spend with them at this age is crucial.

A book that I read whilst on vacation in Fiji earlier this year had an enormous effect on me and if like me you have been trying to juggle seven pieces of life and give them your all it might be worth reading.

It is called the last lecture and tells the story of an amazingly courageous man called Randy Pausch" for any of your that have purchased my current W.S.O,Randy is quoted on the cover'.

The book tells the story of a brilliant young professor who is diagnosed with terminal cancer at a young age and with a very young family and the way that he gets every second from every minute with his remaining time with the people he loves.

Whilst doing this Randy also manages to give what he calls the last lecture which has become a best selling book since his passing and was also a significant professional goal achieved.

If you have not seen the book you might want to take three minutes out and watch this inspiring footage of the last lecture.

If the link doesn't work take the time to scrible down the words (the last lecture) and youtube it I promise it is worthwhile.

I'm a new marketer and I was an avid lego fan when I was a kid. I recently sat back and asked myself what the significance of my fascination with lego was when I was a child and I got the notion that I'm very creative, I love to tap my imagination and I like building things and putting stuff together. I just started applying the stuff I'm learning in IM after spending about a year buying products and not using them. I love it, it's definitely addicting and I'm happy that I'm taking action. I came on here for some inspiration and some motivation to start working but after reading your post I think I'm going to map out my plan of attack for the week and take the first step.

      Hi Ari,

      Thanks for your reply.
I hope a few people do find this post, not for my ramblings but to watch the last lecture video. It is a life changing speech for mine.

To have the clarity and courage to speak so honestly about life and goals and what is important in his situation.

Randy Pausch showed incredible guts and I think of him and the book regularly.
