Hi, I was going to create a wordpress blog and wordpress
gave some options to choose:

www .mydomain.wordpress. com

www .mydomain. com

www .mydomain. net

I guess with www .mydomain. wordpress. com I won't be
able to post any affiliate links right ?

What are the other differeces between registering

www .mydomain. wordpress.com or

www. mydomain. com

taking into consideration SEO and other different factors?

    I suppose credibility. w w w dot mydomain dot com looks more professional

    Is that a real issue to people though?

    If possible I would go for that one but your average web-user might not even notice or care.

    I agree that having your own domain name is better...HOWEVER, using the Wordpress URL can help with SEO sometimes.

      wordpress.com will not allow any affiliate selling on their public hosted sites. Just thought you should know if you were hoping to use Clickbank or others to monetize.

    If you host freely at wordpress.com you're subject to the 'tyranny' that reigns behind it. They are anti-affiliate, it's true. Wordpress.com is good for like, academic, personal, and science blogs, but nothing that could be considered commercial.

    The advantage of using your own domain name is control and branding, most important being CONTROL.

    First of all mydomain.com it sounds more professional, second of all yes, it has an impact on rankings and also it is better to have a self hosted blog then a free hosted one.

      Actually for the keyword phrase I want to rank for www. mydomain. com is taken but I guess that for example adding a number to the keyword phrase on the domain like: www. mydomain2. com would still be the best option....no?

        If you're going to host it at wordpress.com, and have any form of monetisation on the blog at all, then it makes no difference at all which of the above you use, because you'll be breaching their terms of service and they'll delete your blog wihtin 1 minute of noticing it, or it being "reported" to them.

        Seriously.

        This isn't like blogger.com where they're inconsistent and idiosyncratic about it and you might just get away with it: to wordpress.com this is absolutely black and white. No form of monetisation is allowed or accepted there, whether you're using your own domain-name or not. It's for "hobby bloggers" and so on, only. Just so you know.

    Having your own domain is very important but it depends on the traffic you want to get. If you are trying to optimize get your own name. If you are trying to be recognizable get your own name. A domain name is very important.

    BTW you can't actualy register www .mydomain. wordpress.com. It would be under wordpress.com. and THEY would be the ones that would have to add the reference.
