Blog commenting on relevant blogs, commenting on relevant forums (with your website's link in your signature), social bookmarking, press releases, posting on free classified ads sites, Yahoo Answers responses, releasing free eBooks with your affiliate links in them, etc. There are lots of ways to get traffic without Google.

Actually, according to the few sites on which I have Google Analytics installed (I prefer AW Stats for most of my sites), it shows I get FAR more organic search engine traffic from Yahoo and Bing than from Google. Like hundreds more each day than from Google, even though I'm ranked highly in Google for many of my keywords. So concentrating on SEO for Yahoo and Bing may be a good approach, too.

I have been working on the other search engines for my sites, as well. While we have to work to stay within the guidelines for any of the search engines, we cannot build the sites FOR the search engines. We have to build sites for PEOPLE.

After the farmer algorithm hit several of my sites, I did tons of research, changed my sites multiple times, and finally made the decision not to attempt to radically change my sites every time the algorithm changes...it was too frustrating, took all the fun out of what I'm doing, and that was definitely not the reason that I started IM.

So, I have returned to my original business plan, and I am running my business the way I had originally intended. When the algorithm changes again (and it will), maybe it will not matter so much, especially if I am not catering to any one search engine.

My suggestion is internal banner buying e.g. contact sites and ask for links.

Contrary to public opinion, not all websites are so laser-focused on getting all of their traffic from Google.

Many of us have long understood the importance of diversifying our traffic sources, so that when Google did change something, we would not be left in a full-state of panic.

Others have foolishly relied only on one source for their traffic, and now they are racing to try to figure out how to save themselves in the aftermath of the Google Farmer Update. Those companies may very likely have lay-offs in their future...

            Hello Gang,

Just joined WF last night. My first post, and looking forward to getting to know all of you "fellow posters."

What type of traffic? Are most members interested in generating leads, buyers, or both?

My background is in CPA. Wondering why no one has touched on email yet?

If done correctly, and with the right tools, email can be very powerful and cost effective in generating mass traffic.

Whats wrong with Yahoo and Bing? I built my list with the traffic from those two search engines. Google is not the only search engine in town. Ahh that brings use to back end of web hosting.

Now to be honest, I have not spent one day working on Google. But when I look and my stats, 58% of my traffic is coming from Google.

By the way, Yahoo is the second largest search engine and Bing is the third.

Google is becoming more saturated with authority and corporate sites. This is also reflected in their new regulations to adwords.

To get traffic you need to look toward new and upcoming traffic sources like Google once was. Try starting in Facebook or other social networking sites. Also, YouTube and large forums like this will help you.

These are the new 'google' so to speak.

    Hi Lozzer100,

I have been using Facebook a lot lately. It has been working out great for me. You are right, Google's algorithm change has surely changed things to me also. You really have to keep up date with Google if you are big in SEO.

That's why I prefer using Facebook and their ads. I will have people like a page and that way you can send an email to them with the "send a message" option in the fan page. This way you do not have the overhead charges of an Aweber, no matter how big the list gets.

To get the CPC or CPM low you can use all kinds of tactics. Most important is choosing the right demograpics and changing the ads pictures frequently or else people get bored looking at them.

Off-line I have been using Bluetooth advertising at some busy 4 way, 3 lanes intersection here in Dallas. Wow, so many have their Bluetooth enabled, it's crazy.

If you want a flood of traffic, the simple truth is you're going to have to either pay for it or work your butt off right now.

There's no real magic way to get traffic, but my advice is to go to where all the traffic already is.

Past Google, the next 2 big "traffic stars" are Facebook and Youtube.

Another one, I would go with is Twitter, because of it's high traffic and ease of use.

You don't have to spend a whole lot of time on twitter to make some awesome connections on there with REAL people.

These are all great ways to bring traffic, and there is no magic way to get automatic traffic from these sites with little to no work, and if there was, would it really be of the quality you're looking for.

Take some time, have some fun, make some connections.

Find people talking about stuff related to your niche and go out and talk to them.

Find some "big players" in your niche, and go out and talk to people they are friends with.

Does it take time, yes? Does it work, double yes?

Just have some fun with it.

Also, Youtube is more of a social network than ever, and is becoming increasingly so. Get out and connect with some people.

Loz, great idea to get people chiming in on a much needed subject.

What you'll typically get is one or two methods that work best for
the person telling you their experience.

        That's great...up to a point.

When launching an advertising campaign, the first
question needs to be asked is...

"Where do my ideal customers/clients already gather that can be
        reached affordably?"

The "golden oldies" would be best reached in their
local community newspapers and news talk back radio.

Gamers would be reached at their online forums and Facebook.

Young mothers would be on parenting online forums
and list owners of young mothers.

Selling to business owners would be direct mail, email and in their trade journals.

So to recap, first know your ideal customer and go where they congregate.

And please don't fall for the nonsense that one method is best.

        Best,
        Ewen

I use article directories and consider anything I get from the search engines to be a bonus. If the content is written well, then others will pick it up and syndicate it all over the place. The problem most have with article marketing is they think overnight success and riches is possible. Article marketing is a long term plan and will always make money if done right.

i would have to say twitter, or at least, some form of social media. twitter remains a good way to 1) get followers 2) post your updates to them. of course you cant take a commercial approach; you need to treat it like a personal feed.

trouble is with this you need to constantly work on it. there is no compound result, like with google where a search position can serve you for years after the initial outlay. twitter is very "now" but next to google i have received the most traffic.

The big G became the big G gradually by offering search engine services to those who were looking for something online. It is a challenge to other search engines to step up their game so that g can be ousted and replaced with another.
Facebook at a time looked as if it was taking over but i think they just don't do quite the same thing.
The single decision of the big G shaking everyone by their decision is not too good. Do we all sink if they sink?
Let other search engines step up.

Some good answers here so far, but one method that has not been mentioned yet -- which has worked very well for me -- is software directory submissions.

Obviously, your product has to be a software program for this to work. But if you submit your program to a hundred or so of the top directories, you can get a pretty steady stream of direct traffic from that, for years to come.

Actually, you don't HAVE to have a software program for this. I found a PDF-to-EXE converter somewhere (don't have the name handy), so I took one of my posted articles, converted to PDF, then to EXE. Then I jumped through all the hoops to create a PAD file and do the submissions, although I did have a 30-day-free-trial tool to automate that task. Worked pretty well to get backlinks, at least, and spread over time as many of them force your submission to wait if you don't pay extra.

So, at least for backlinks, you can use the software directory submission technique even without a real software program as your product!

First of all, nothing is ousting Google as best search engine. Google is awesome, it got where it is today for several reasons, sure, but, quite simply they are the best at what they do.

People will keep going to Google, because they return the most relevant results. They read your mind, man (or something like that).

Binghoo (my pet name) just doesn't return the same quality results that Google does consistently.

    Google simply outnerds everyone else.

I don't know why anyone would get flamed for targeting Binghoo. They are two HUGE search engines, their ranking algorithm is simpler, and if you rank in one you rank the same in the other.

Bing determines ranking based on the content on your page as its primary ranking consideration.

Internal and external links are less important to Bing.

    Yahoo buys listings from Bing.

Many of the other smaller engines also rely on content on the page, so long as they can find at least one link to your site.

I still get most of my traffic from Google. I am looking into diversifying though.

I was reading a promising wso, think I found it in the war room, on how to get traffic with youtube.

Basic premis. Find youtube vids with 50k+ views, less than 1 year old, and 30 comments a day, in your niche.

Approach the user and ask to put a link to your page, for a monthly fee... $10 per 1000 clicks.

I was all psyched.... anyway, it's very hard to find such videos.... most that are that popular are covered in ads, or are link to their own sites....

The wso claimed most people on youtube don't know anything about IM... I beg to differ.

I may look into CPA, but for now, I'm sticking with what I know... google.

It's been a slow process for me, but I have gotten to a place where I'd be ok if all my traffic from Google disappeared. If all my Adwords traffic disappeared, I could handle that too (but I wouldn't be happy). I did it through this combination.

---Yahoo & Bing. Great conversions, just less traffic.
    ---Adcenter---Great conversions, less traffic.
---Facebook---Another way to spread the message, but not as great as I would like.
---Email---I've been building an email list since 2005 so my list is fairly large. And I can get good results with monthly email sales.
---Affiliates---In my particular niche, I've only been able to find a few good affiliates. But out of those 3, they bring in REALLY good sales.
    ---Wholesale--Self Explanatory.
---Offline---I am in a niche where it makes sense to go offline, it's just a little harder to target the right customer from the comfort of your own home. You need to do some more "Old School" things like pick up the phone and talk to people, send things in the mail, and advertise in papers. Still though, when you find a good outlet, you can make TONS of money.

Overall, I just enjoy the traffic I get from Google and am just trying to take advantage when I can. My focus is growing the pie through alternative traffic methods.

There are numerous ways of getting traffic without Google.

Facebook is definitely one of the biggest, marketing with Fanpages can be very succesful. Twitter can also get you a lot of traffic.
Another great way of getting traffic is Youtube. Upload videos related to your niche, and watermark them with the URL of your website. Also include the link in the description.

Think out of the box - for example, you could aso watermark images with the URL of your website and the participate in an imageboard.

But the best way to get a lot of traffic still is good content. I know you've probably heard this a lot of times, but if your content is good, people will come to your website and link to it just because they want to share it with others.

Free traffic without google can be done through blogs and forums. It takes time and patience but it will be targeted just like google.

For faster results, ppc is the best. You can buy cheaper but effective traffic thru ads, banners on thank you pages and reputable solo mail in.

Facebook seems to be very good for me. Twitter is not really helpful.

Email marketing is another good way to get traffic and make money online without Google.

You can offer your services through email messages, besides promoting various products.

A great free traffic tactic is to do article marketing for syndication instead of for article directories.

Find high traffic blogs/sites in your niche that allow you to contribute articles/guest posts, and submit your content to them. Your article should be high quality though. Don't write for SEO, write it for readers and they will click through from your resource box. You get direct traffic from established sites that already have targeted traffic on them.

If you want to use paid traffic, why not take advantage of other sites with higher rankings.

Find sites that are ranked on page 1 in your niche that have adsense on them, then use the Google content network to place your image ads directly on those sites. So if sites are getting traffic by ranking high on Google, you intercept that traffic as well by having your ads on their site.

There are a billion different ways to get traffic...a lot have been mentioned in this thread, and there are still many others that haven't.

    Co-registration mailing.

I have never used anything else in the past 11+ years.

However this is not a free or cheap process of getting traffic initially. But it does become free traffic (excluding monthly operational costs...server(s)/IPs) after you breakeven on the initial cost of the co-reg.

Some good traffic source has already been discussed here. It really boils down to diversification of traffic source, and diversification of your business. It may pay to do some offline gigs as well, assuming your business scales that way.

My best ways of getting traffic seem to have been directories, social bookmarking, article marketing (blasting it out with AMR). In that order. I was surprised to see all the directory links in my stats as I was skeptical when I first did it, but it has paid off.

Find a "gatekeeper" that has an audience you'd like to reach. Make the "gatekeeper" look like a hero while skimming some leads (email opt-in) from their list/visitors.

    Some Examples:

    1. Write an ebook that appeals to their audience and give it to the gatekeeper to use in any way they'd like. Insert an "optional opt-in" for free future updates. Promise the gatekeeper that you'll promo their stuff anytime they want you to (JV of course).

    2. Write a guest blog post that speaks highly of the "gatekeeper". Get specific permission to include an opt-in feature. Use aweber to generate a great lead capture page in minutes (see this video: Grow your email list WITHOUT a website! - YouTube )

    3. Interview several "small fish" in the same niche (it's easy to track down small fish) and then once you've done several of these, approach the "big fish" with a long list of interviews and offer to GIVE IT TO THEM as content in exchange for an interview. Turn it all into a package or an ebook and do idea 1 above.

The win/win/win strategy is ALL I've ever used to build traffic and my list. Google can toy with their pagerank, algorithm and random whims all they'd like. I've NEVER cared. I've been saying that "SEO is for chumps" for years because I don't need it or rely on it at all. I just keep creating great content and partnering with great people.
