The site in question is:

Getting British Business Online

Before you continue you'll need the following to complete the process:

Business name, address & phone number
Your UK mobile phone number and phone
Ideas about the text and pictures you would like to put on your website

Does require a verified google email account

Could be something you can offer as a service for free since they are supporting UK businesses to get online.

Do you not have to use their general templates if you take their offer? Meaning, you could not launch your own website on the domain?

    It's simple:

    1. Choose a website address
    2. Select and customise a template
    3. Publish your website

I have not tried it personally yet, so someone will have to test and report back.

The downside with this is you don't have a great deal of control.

I like to own my domains, hosting, emails etc and I'm not overly trusting of anything set up by the Government here.

Just my take but I'd rather pay the extra and be in control and not at the whim of these people.

No offense to the OP, I realise this was done as a genuinely warm hearted thing to do but as someone that's looked into this, it's definately not my cup of tea.

I used this service a couple of months ago...

You get a free domain name and that is linked to a Google sites web page. If you want multiple domains you need a new mobile number for each.

You have no control over the domain yourself (to change nameservers) but you can email the registrar and they will change it for you. That takes a few days though.

All in all its a pretty good service if you are short on cash or you want to use Google sites.
