Make money with iPhone Apps?

Not sure if this is online marketing or not but it is computer related...

I have heard of people who make iPhone apps that are making tons of money selling them on the App Store. I have a couple of good ideas for apps but it is 99 bucks a year to develop them and also do they teach you the basic code?

  • I don't do this myself (yet) but there's definitely good money to be made here. I would only consider trying to do it if you have a strong programming background.

There's a transcript of a great interview here with some guys who had iPhone apps created by outsourced contractors and made a lot of money:
$80,000 A Month In App Sales By Outsourcing EVERYTHING – with Mike Moon and Quoc Bui | Case Studies & Business Tips
(The upfront capital required is definitely more than $99.)

I only have basic-intermediate HTML knowledge so I guess it would be hard for me but I could sure learn.

Wow thanks so much. I will definitely look into this but I am so limited on time. I just have a few ideas for development which I can do after I focus on my current projects.

To create a great app it is definitely going to cost you a lot more than $99. If you plan on doing things yourself then I would imagine it will take you a fair amount of time to learn how to develop a really good app.

A well developed app can cost you anywhere from $1,500 right up to $20-30,000 and more. People are able to charge this type of money because there is a lot of skill and knowledge involved.

Sometimes it doesn't need to be incredibly complex to go viral, especially when it comes to games. Zynga is a classic example of this - all their games are pretty simple for the most part, but incredibly addictive!

You definitely can make an app yourself. Look at bubble ball, I think the kid is like 13. And it went crazy. Learning everything is a great skill but it takes time to develop something with a great UI. Maybe looking to outsource it might be the best option.
if you need more help let me know, I have some great developers in my network.

you can make a silly basic app your self and sell it for 99 cents... i've seen a lot of crap with many sales, it's all about a catchy text and name... make it about s*x and people will buy it... it's pretty amazing...

I just depends what kind of app your looking at making if its simple i am sure you can find people that will do it for a small budget but if its something complex it will cost an require more skills.

      Good Luck,

No doubt there is big money to be made in iPhone Apps but either you need to be a very good programmer or willing to spend a lot more than $99 to get a good app created.

As far as I am aware the apps are developed in C/C++ language and learning them is not as simple as learning HTML

    Best Regards

I have 40+ iPhone apps in the app store which net me about +/-$1000 a month. I don't have any programming knowledge at all. Just ideas and outsourcing.

I am pretty experienced in the App game, now reading WF to get into the adsense, IM, niche game.

How much are you spending to get each App created? I've got so many ideas. And to be honest I want one in the store to show off to mates

Great thread! Fantastic information here for anyone considering being an iPhone app developer. Jack McLean was 16 years old when he created the 'Terry Touch' app. I am sure you could find information online and read his success story for inspiration, possible app. ideas and steps which lead him on his road to success. Good luck! and let us know how it goes.

    Hey FreshDomains,

Yes, like almost any market, there's money to be made on the AppStore, provided that you've got a solid product.

I don't know what the costs involved in building apps are but I'd be willing to bet that it's more expensive than $99 per year.

Keep in mind that, in order to achieve success with your app, it needs to be well made. If you want to go through with development, you'll have to outsource it and, depending on the scale of the app, you'll be looking at $500 to $10 000.

Trey Smith just released a product called the Software System. He gave away some great information in his launch videos but I'm not sure if they're still up or not.

    Hope that helps

Interesting thread. I just gave a quote to a realtor who asked me for an iphone app... I went in to talk about mobile marketing of a different kind...

Mobile is where the money is going.

I have a biz partner who has brought his entire product range onto 3 of the major mobile platforms: Apple, Android and Intel.

He's got 250 apps, and will have 1000 apps up by the end of this year. This really opened my eyes...

I am happy to talk to anyone who needs app help.

      Go for it!

That is great. Thanks for the info. Also Facebookster.com you would think is a TM infringement.

I'm curious what types of apps your partner currently has on the market, i.e. games, utilities, productivity, entertainment, etc.?

What was the average cost of outsourcing each app, and is he actively marketing these apps to gain exposure and sales? I have read that promotion is pretty critical, so that your app can stand out among the sea of apps out there.
