Total visits decreasing? - Google Analytics

So Google Analytics has been telling me that the last few days my total visits have decreased. How is this possible?

On the page where you click view report there is a visits column. It was at 1500 a couple days ago and has gone down since then. It's now at 1376. Shouldn't that number only go up?

Is anyone else experiencing the same thing?
And what could be the cause?

Why do you assume your visitor numbers can not go down? Google did a big update last week and a lot of sites were affected as a result. You could be one of them.

Because he's talking about total number of visits to his site ever. That thing can't go down. However you're right in that in analytics you'll normally be viewing the amount of visits in a certain period and I guess this is what's going on

On that same page (where you can click view report) look in the top right corner. There it is indicated what period you are looking at. Normally it will be set to "Month" in which case you are looking at trafic during the past month. Obviously every day this will change since you'll have new traffic coming in but you'll also stop counting the traffic for some particular day a month ago. If you want to see the total traffic click the "view report" and then on the new page in the top right corner you can edit the date range to be your sites lifetime.

      Hope this helps

By default, the number you are referring to is total number of unique visitors in the last 30 days. If each new day posts unique visits that is some number less than the day it dropped off of the back end 30 days ago, then your total UV count will go down.

It is not "total UV's to date" tally, it is "total UV's as per the last 30".

      Exactly.

As someone said, Google changed their algorithm big time a couple of days ago. Your site may have got hit and ranks a bit lower than usual.

This is exactly the answer I was looking for. I didn't realize that on that page it's only calculating the last 30 days. Rather random choice on their part I think, but hey now I know. Thank you.

Google changing their algorithm has nothing to do with this. Changing an algorithm doesn't affect how many people have visited my site. It may change how many will, but since my site never ranked anyway I'm not too worried. Haha.

You were faster than me. This is the answer you are looking for. It's funny because I had the same question last year until I realized it

      Obvious spam, is obvious.

Quick question, Who would recomend using Google Analytics over some of the paid programmes?

I'm completely happy with GA. Why pay for something when there is a robust free service. I'm sure there are upsides to getting a paid program, but at this stage of the game for me, I don't need it.
