    You're very right to be focusing in on building a buyers list. Without customers no business can survive. Building a list of subscribers is good but you need to convert them into buyers ASAP.

    You never know when someone is going to see that magic email or special promo, and convert themselves from a "tire kicker" to a buyer.

    Never.

    On the surface it seems obvious that eliminating freebie-seekers and people who appear as if they're never going to purchase a product from your list makes sense...lower AR fees, etc.

    But in reality, everyone at some point has purchased SOMETHING in their life, and if your copy is strong you WILL wear them down. At some point you'll present something to them that they'll have to have and you'll convert them.

    Even if 1,000 buyers produce the same overall sales per month that 12,000 freebie-seekers do (and this is about right, it's 12:1 typically on massive lists), you wouldn't want to give away half your income by eliminating the 12,000 right?

    The gurus (and others) that propogate the "buyer's only list" philosophy have their hearts in the right place. But in reality everything is sales will always come down to the 80/20 rule (20% of your list will create 80% of your revenue). And I'm not willing to throw away that smaller income just over some cheap AR fees.

        Definitely something worth doing, Jason Fladlien had a great write-up about your exact thought in one of his reports. He spoke convincingly about the power of using a RAP 100%-front-end commission incentive on low-price products ($7-10) as a way to massively grow buyer's lists.

        Certainly worth experimenting with.

      Yes, a lot of people seem to forget that a buyer was once a non-buyer. Whether or not someone has purchased something from you before, if you do a good enough job of convincing someone that they must have your product, they will find a way to buy it even if they don't have the money.

      Non buyers can also bring you other benefits like spreading the word, etc.

        The "spreading the word part can be huge", just by offering the tire-kickers a freebie download or gift incentive if they send out emails to their friends with your auto-inclusion email address for the list.

          Exactly. And I am not against creating buyer lists - you should always segment your lists depending on the actions they take. But that is NOT to say you should get rid of the people who have not bought from you yet. Some people just take a little extra convincing and as was said, even if they don't buy they can still be a raving fan.

          It depends how the lists were created.

          Let's say you've got a 1,000 size list of $10 buyers.

          Then you've got an opt-in list of a 1,000.

          But these 1,000 subscribers had spent $200 each with a competitor previously, buying a product in the same niche.

          Which list is worth more?

            Definitely, which as Will said is the reason why you segement your lists.

            I don't think anyone is saying "don't" make a buyers list, or buyers-only list, but we're just making sure people don't throw the baby out with the bathwater over what really are insignificant AR fees in the long run.

    I've heard of similar ideas but the technical aspect that always gets me is getting people on to your list. If you are selling a product through something like RAP or digiresults.com like suggested, how do you actually get the names/emails of these buyers into your list at Aweber?
