A little help with Wordpress.

I set up a new WP site and I change the custom structure to %postname%. How do I update my .htaccess? I am using FileZilla ftp program. I changed the file permission to 666 in the index.php as instructed by WP instructions, but my links to my new post keep showing this:

"Not Found

The requested URL /will-enlargement-supplements-really-enlarge-your-breasts was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Hair

You need to change the permissions on your htaccess file not the index file.
Change the htaccess permissions to 666 go into your admin and click on the button to change your permalink. You should see something saying it has been changed. Go and change your permissions on your htaccess to what they where.

You should not change the file permissions of your standard files they should be 644 .. This is why you got an error.

You do not need to edit the .htaccess, I also am using the custom setting and I did not need to do anything with my .htaccess file..

I have gone in under "Settings" then under "Permalinks" in WP admin and used "/%postname%" in custom structure blank without having to touch the htaccess file. Should work.

I have had issues in the past on some servers where I needed to update the .htaccess file manually. If that is the case, doesn't WP tell you what the .htaccess file should look like. You could copy/paste into the .htaccess file with that code.

Additionally, you may need to go "view -> Show Hidden Files" to see the .htaccess file in your root directory of the WP installation.

If you just can't figure it out, let me know!

Exactly, on some servers the htaccess will be rewritten without changing the permissions on the file on others you either have to change the permissions first or copy the code that will be displayed on the permalinks page to the htaccess file manually.
If the htaccess file isn't written to when you update your permalink structure the code will be displayed at the bottom of the permalinks page.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll have to reset my other permission back to 644,
then I will try to copy and paste method. I can see the .htaccess file in the ftp program, but when I right clicked on it and change the file permission to 666 it still would not work.
