My first success in IM ! $1,400 in 18 Days :)

Hi Everyone

I am just happy to report that after trying for so long I have finally made some money online. So far I have made about $1400 in roughly 18 days. It is not much I know but it affirms to me that it is definitely possible to make money online.

In a nutshell here is what I did:

1. Found a hungry market with little competition.

2. Created my own product to sell

3. Created a free ebook giveaway and set up squeeze page to build list.

4. Created a blog with some useful articles to establish trust and credibility

5. Drove traffic to squeeze page. ( used paid traffic via ads )

6. Set up autoresponder with 8 messages going out spaced out 2 days apart.

7. Each message included useful tips with soft sale linking to my product page

8. Used e-junkie + paypal to collect payments and deliver product

9. Have sold 14 products at $97 each in about 18 days.

Valuable lessons I have learned along the way:

a. Research your market carefully before going in and doing all the hard work. Wrong Market = Destined to failure.

b. Create Your Own Product. I repeat... Create Your Own Product .. if you want any chance of making reasonable money.

c. Use email marketing / list building ... it works! Use other forms of marketing to drive traffic to your squeeze page first.

d. Create a blog and post useful tips on it to establish credibility. People only buy online if they trust you enough.

e. Be persistent even if the going seems tough in the beginning.

f. You have to invest money to make money. Yes - it is like running any other business. That's been my experience and I'm sure a lot of successful marketers will agree with me.

Well, thanks for reading ... I hope this at least helps inspire someone ...

It's just about sticking to the fundamentals, not being distracted by all the latest hyped up products that you get delivered to your inbox every day promising you the earth, and rolling your sleeves up! I love a good success story, I hope it continues to go well for you, i'm sure it will.

I'm curious, which method of paid traffic are you using?

So true man .. only after i started focusing and actually doing some real work ... did I start getting results.

I've used craigslist ads and niche blogs where my audience is located.

        Hope that helps

    Congratulations Nick!

You just outlined a simple and tested system that has worked for ages and is the subject of a lot of ebooks and WSO's.

Perhaps you should do a short report about your success and sell it to others as your second product!

    Congrats again.

        Hi Owen .. good question

My squeeze page is located seperately but on the same domain.
for example: www.mydomain.com/free. This way there are no distractions and the only options are to opt- in or leave.

However, I have also placed the free ebook giveaway on the blog in case someone ends up there directly.

      Hi Craig

I actually used Craigslist Ads and ads on a few niche blogs as that is where my target audience hangs out. Hope that answers your question.

If you've done well with Craigslist paid Ads, try Backpage.com Nick.

I got a sharp email about it from Austin Hilton that opened my eyes a bit on what's possible there, your same creative will likely work similarly at a lower CPM or CPC.

Excellent work all around, if you can convert Craigslist Ads you can convert anywhere. Bravo.

It's much lower, but your ROI/net margin may be higher. Something to add to your quiver of arrows...but honestly you could likely scale it up through major media buys right now and it would probably do fantastic.

That's the beauty of testing paid ads, you never know when you'll hit a niche or funnel that's profitable even from cold generic traffic.

Hi Craig .. I would love to buy major media buys but am concerned about one thing .. the one blog that I tried in the niche only gave me a CTR of 0.35%. I realized that is about the average for banner ads but my concern is whether it would be a good ROI ... there are many blogs in this niche for me to advertise on but my concern is low CTR ...

Of course I will have to test out different ones but just naturally scared to spend the money

Almost exactly what I have been doing, minus the list-building.

List building didn't work for me because I followed the advice of some idiot 'guru' who told me to advertise my product with every email I sent out. The more I learn about it now, it seems that's the wrong idea. I want to try list building again, but I don't want to risk losing any of my current income by going from salespage to opt-in page. Will try it again in the future.

    a. Research your market carefully before going in and doing all the hard work. Wrong Market = Destined to failure.
This is the single most important step in any business/marketing endeavor.

What type of product do you have btw? Is it an ebook, or a video series or something? $97 is a hefty price. You may want to test different prices to see if you don't make more money by lowering your price a little.

Thanks a lot for your post.

      Hi there

      1. List building does work done the right way. You have to be very good with your list and do not bombard them with sales messages. Instead offer them useful advice. In my case I offer direct step by step tips on how to accomplish something and my product helps in achieving those steps .. hence the soft-sell.

      2. The product is actually a "kit" which includes ready made tools.. i.e ebooks, letters, templates, etc.

      3. Yes I have really thought about dropping the price ... however, i am planning to build my list to a considerable size and then I will create a 24 hour 50% off sale to entice people to buy ... ( old marketing ploy ... but I've heard it works ). After 24 hours raise price back to $97.

ps: the other good thing I feel about building my list is that I plan creating additional products in the future which I can market to my already created list.

It's the total with a combination of both. It's important to note here that I chose craigslist because I found a lot of my target market searching there .. that does not mean craigslist would be ideal for any niche... it worked for my specific niche ... the point to learn is to target and advertise on internet properties where your target audience hangs out ... haha ... now i sound like I'm stating the obvious

No I don't think so ... you have to advertise where most of your target audience in your niche hangs out. In my case it is partly craigslist.

I think that it does not really matter which niche you choose as long as you do it well.

It's a great story to remind ourselves not to overcomplicate things... I think the reason we do that is because most people are afraid to actually put the work to make things work and we keep on chasing the shiny objects that promise wealth overnight. Guess what... if we keep on chasing we'll keep on lacking...

It goes to show that some good old fashion marketing (no miracle softwares) and the persistance to make it work in an ethical way is the way to go.

I'd just like to add that after this success, he could actually try and outsource to buy his time back and ramp it up a bit... or a lot

          Well done!

      Hi there .. thanks

      1. My blog's domain name was registered about a year ago... but I only recently posted articles to it before my product launch. So it is very new. In my case the main reason for the blog is to establish trust and credibility. Over time I hope to have it start ranking in the search engines ( I'm hoping )

      2. I currently have about 900 subscribers on my list.

    Good for you!

You learned the lesson exactly right. Your own products will always make you more money.

The only thing I would add is the back end to your sales funnel.

Capture the buyers emails in a separate list. If they bought from you before they will again and again and again.

Also try to think about upsells and downsells.

Try the upsell first. If they don't take it send them to the downsell.

Explode your earnings by doing this. It has made me a LOT more money since I started that process.

That is a great idea and one that many newbies wouldn't think to do. I know from my own experience that when I find someone who provides good information, I am more than willing to buy from them the next time something comes out - in fact I am eager to pickup their latest product.

Congratulations, Nick. You're implementing a time-tested and realistic IM strategy that isn't a fad, and will work for a long time to come.

Now what's left to do is ramp up your traffic by spending more on it (after testing carefully, of course) and also building up your product funnel to include upsells, downsells and possibly even a monthly subscription/membership program.

I'm pretty much pumped up and inspired to TAKE ACTION on the steps you mentioned in your original post. If you can do it, I certainly can. Nick, what an awe inspiring post you made and showed us that it certainly does work if you put in the focus, determination and hard work!

I doubted whether what you did will work or not just a day back but now you've restored full faith in the fact that if you do it correctly, selling products online does work.

I wonder whether you hired a copywriter to write sales copy for your sales letter or you wrote it after learning to write sales copy your self.

I think it is important for me to start off right away about deciding a niche I must enter into and research it thoroughly before I enter it.

I wrote the sales copy myself ... now I am still wondering whether it is good or not ... I tried to avoid the long winding sales letter format as I think that distracts people .. I could be wrong ... so still working on it

    Outstanding my man.
If you produce a decent product, have a decent sales letter (optional), have an email follow up in place, and use quality paid traffic, it's not so hard to make a fast amount of profit.
Just imagine what you can do when you have up sells ready to go!
    Good luck with the future.
