Even Squidoo Wants Curated Content!

With all the talk of the algorithm change by Google, I found it interesting to find this note in my dashboard yesterday at Squidoo:

You have a singing telegram.
Okay, it doesn't really sing. But it is a telegram of sorts.

We wanted to share with you The Squidoo Scroll Of Originality. It is a handshake, a thank you, and a reminder to keep writing original lenses. Lenses that no one else could have written better or more uniquely than we know you can. (And many of you do!).

It also comes with a few extra tips for crafting lenses that stand out from the crowd and reach their (and your) full potential.

We hope you'll give it a read. (Or our blog post about this stuff). And thank you for being here.

--Megan and the rest of your faithful SquidTeam
And if you go and look at the Scroll Of Originality you'll see they mention wanting unique content, or even CURATED content if you are using content from other sources. Interesting move, given the talk of the algorithm change and curation topics that have arisen here on the WF.

Looks like curation may be the new thing, for those unable to create all the content themselves. And it looks like Squidoo plans to reward it's members for doing so.

Here's the official blog post about it on Squidoo The Official Squidoo Blog » Blog Archive » The Scroll of Originality

Personally, I think it's a good move for them if they don't want to get slapped like EZA. (Or like they have in previous years.)

Your thoughts?

Sylvia

P.s Notice even this post... it's curated. Information from different sources, cited and my own info added in

Thanks for the info, Sylvia. But even though Squidoo says they wanted unique content, is it not against their terms to use content found elsewhere?

I'm also clueless about curation. I was wondering if anyone can explain in crystal-clear, layman's term what curation really means? Is it combining information gotten from various sources and adding your own unique content? Thanks a lot!

      Michael,

No you can use any content you find (that you have permission to use), as long as you cite the source (give credit to where you got it from).

      Laymans terms of curation:

Use content from different sources to compile a unique creation of your own. Cite your sources for the content, and add your own unique personality and point of view.

      Look at my post above.

I used 3 different sources, the letter in my Squidoo dashboard, the actual scroll of originality link, and then the Squidoo blog post about it. I merged them together to create my post, while adding my own thoughts, and citing where I had gotten this information from. Thereby creating a curated post.

      Make sense?

      Best wishes,
      Sylvia

          Katya,
Not a problem. I know a lot of people are still having problems visualizing what curation actually is, so I thought by setting up my post the way I did, it would give the perfect example to look at.

          OCD,
Dependent on the niche I am writing for, I can write unique, quality content in minimal time. Once you've written and researched a topic enough, translating those thoughts to written words doesn't take much time at all. But I do agree, it's nice that the days of chewed up, crapped out content are gone.

          Best wishes,

    Thanks Sylvia,

It's good to see some of these sites actively seeking out good quality content and moderation.

      Andy,

I agree, and think there's been more then enough time for some of these sites to wake up and start realizing not everyone online likes or appreciates crap content. That some users actually prefer content that is of good quality that actually addresses their concerns and issues.

Overall, I think the Google Farmer update was a good move and it will be interesting to see how things fair over the next little bit as the dust settles.

      Best wishes,

It's no longer 2003 finally! Now people have to use their brains. Those that claim they write all original, and in 5 minutes nonetheless, will compete against everybody else on an equal playing field...supposedly.

The link of great joy and happiness...but this one? This is the one that all window cleaning companies in the free world are inspired by. Hey, where did the sarcasm font go?

I think going forward all the sites will focus on quality content so that they don't get slapped hard by Google in future. This is actually a good news for people who create original and quality content. Even though it is easy to get discouraged by the latest Google changes, I feel in the long run people having great content on their sites are going to see huge benefit.

I think this is a good move, for all content creators that actually focused on quality content from the start. For those who didn't, it's giving them a good kick in the backside to start.

LOL, I know there are quite a few of us that feel that way. Especially those of us left unhurt by the Farmer slap.

Was not sure what curated meant but now I understand. It is other content that you add your own info to. I think it would be better to spin one as google would still see that you have some duplicate content.

Well, I knew this was gonna happen. Just wasn't expecting it this early (I had projected this to happen by the end of 2011)

Squidoo isn't the only site dong this, ezine articles recently increased the minimum word count to 400 and now others are also striving for more quality and less junk.

About time for some spring cleaning?
