Has WF Ever Had Built In 24/7 Chat?

Just curious because my memory's bad. I seem to recall chat at one time but I may have dreamed that! (Seriously).

I'd love a built in chat room that was marketing related.

I know its be a nightmare - policing it - but I'd still love it.

Tiffany, I don't ever recall encountering a built-in chat here. It'd be a really nifty feature to have, but with something like this in a forum of this magnitude, it'd have to be moderated 24/7, and it could be a little difficult to make sense of, especially if thousands log onto it at the same time.

Maybe not chat rooms yet we could try to do something like Facebook where you friend other warriors and can chat with them instantly when they are "online".

Not just policing it, but hosting the thing...it'd be a logistical nightmare.

This could actually be done using IRC, but yes moderating it could be the problem. That would all depend on how many people would actually download an IRC client to be able to chat on the network, or if WF would install there own IRC daemon.

You could also start an IRC room and just put a Flash client on WF domain somewhere which would work too.

Just saying because there's a lot of malware and security forums that have chat rooms on IRC, or run there own IRC server.

George Sepich's Talk Marketing Now chat has plenty of Warriors on it, and there's something on every night. That's pretty close.

I think there are way too many members to have any type of meaningful chat system implemented. Those who do want to chat with another member can easily do so on skye. I think keeping it as a forum only is a much better idea. It makes it a more valuable community as the information discussed is archived for everyone to view.

An IRC channel would be awesome - I stay idle in a few. It's brilliant when you're working on something and need a quick opinion.

    No harm in trying it?

No, the chat just takes people away from sharing their ideas and thoughts in the forum for other people to be able to read at their own leisure. If it ain't busted, don't fix it. There are plenty of alternatives out there for those Warriors who want to chat with one another. This is a forum, not a chatroom.

It's like going along to a restaurant and telling them it would be great if they had a swimming pool...

Yeah part of the problem is most of the chats I've gone to - well they're not talking about marketing when I'm in there. LOL!

Or CD's in there telling me I know more about shenanigans than I let on <g>

But I want a chat where it's all marketing, all the time. Hmmm...

Maybe I'll make my own impromptu chat now and then. LOL!

There is one and you're in it right now.

Paul Myers is known for saying, "Drift Happens..."

      And that is so true...

I work hard to keep the conversation on business and marketing, and we do stay on topic about 95% of the time...

As a moderator, it is sometimes just as important to let Drift Happen...

Otherwise, I would be a nasty ruling overlord and people would not want to be around me...

It really is important to let people be themselves and to have fun, during part of the night... So long as people don't go nasty, things are usually okay...

After all, I do chat on Friday and Saturday night, and that is when most people are at home relaxing...

You dropped by Saturday night during one of our Drift Happens windows...

During a six-hour chat session, we don't want to be too hardcore and anal about staying on topic...

Rather than going into police-state mode when the topic drifts, we let it run its course to a certain extent, then carefully nudge it back to topic...

Yet, we never allow Karaoke, nakedness on camera, fighting between users, smacking food on camera, and generally disrespectful behavior from people who take the camera/microphone or type in text chat...

The biggest challenge of the format is topic selection...

When people want to talk about Local SEO, many people type into chat, "Boring..."

When the conversation sometimes goes to regular SEO, people usually go somewhere else and gray out...

When others want to discuss Copy Writing, some people automatically log off...

When certain people log into chat, some people leave...

When the topic goes to article marketing, some listen intently and participate... Others leave... LOL

When Brian McLeod shows up, a core group wakes up...

I made one change about a month ago, and eliminated 95% of the fighting in the room... :p

The point I would like to make is that moderating this kind of thing is tough...

No matter what we do as moderators, some people are always going to be happy about what we have done, and others will be disappointed...

And sometimes people drop in at exactly the wrong time, stay for a short time, and leave with the wrong impression about what they had seen...

Any 20-minute window during a six-hour event is just a snap shot in time...

And things are not always what they seem to be...

I prefer being in a chat like George's and Bill's than a forum setting...you get to interact better with others on a personal basis when it's live...and unedited...

Sometimes people get off topic there, but it's fun not being so serious all the time...

Have some fun and enjoy life...

Sam, a chat setting can be kind of tricky when you're dealing with many people from diverse backgrounds, and moderating it definitely needs a delicate balance between letting some fun occur, and being too strict and authoritarian (in which case the majority of people just leave). It's a lot of fun though, especially when the conversation's going the right way - the tricky part for the moderator is keeping it that way for as long as humanly possible!

A 24/7 chat would be awesome, although it may be detrimental to me getting any work done. :p

I'd also recommend an IRC channel. The great thing about IRC is that it's supported by almost every portable device under the sun (iPhone/Android/etc) as well as having tons of clients for Windows/Mac/Linux and the possibility to have an on-site flash/java client.

Tiffany -go ahead and start one. That way it can be what you want, which is always a problem with other people's stuff.

I like the skype chat. I don't know about others, but there you can define the group, keep the riffraff (like me) out.
