If a 9 year old can do why can't you?

My son is 9 years old and decided that he needs money since he has to pay back £600 in debt he owes to me for downloading movies and apps from itunes on his ipod whilst I was away in Saudi last year for a month.

Fortunately for me I was able to convince the bank that I did not consent to it and although I did not use the term 'fraud' they decided to refund the money, phew.

But I never told him this at all so he thinks he is still in debt and on disciplinary for the rest of his life. A great thing that has come out of it since now I can role the guilt dice to keep him off all the electronics in the house except for specific times, and get him to read more books.

He decided to set up a sandwich business to pay me back.

Here is a round up of his ideas and I extremely proud of his thinking:

1) Curries and Indian food are big in the UK, it generates more revenue then the British Steel industry and Chicken Tikka Massala is the nations favourite food. We go to a Cash & Carry that do these meat slices that are as follows, spicy beef, chicken tikka, lamb tikka, etc.

2) He initial thought about making the sandwiches and going to the shops but then decided not to in case he gets no orders and the food is wasted. Consequently he as decided to go to the shops first and see if they want the sandwiches on one Saturday. If he gets the orders in he will then make the sale.

3) He intends to take a note book and pen to take the order and the details of the shop owner including email address/phone number so he can follow up for future orders. He actually used the term 'collate a database' which I was throw back when he said it.

4) Since he has tasted the sandwiches himself he believes that there is no reason why others will not like them either [simple logic of a 9 year, I felt like do the analytics thing on him but held back]. There was one called 'Pastirami' which is more expensive then the others and I love it but he hates and will not put this on his menu.

5) He intends to take my kodak zi8 HD recorder to record whilst he is making the sale, when I question why? He said he will use it to teach his friends how to also sell!

6) A survey will be handed afterwards to gain feedback

7) Those who are willing to can provide a video testimonial that he wants to put on youtube.

8) He has interviewed 3 people and will select one as his assistant. I think he said he was going to pay £2

9) If all goes well then he will set up a website [he did one using wordpress for a beast quest fan page]

Now I do not doubt that I have influenced him with what I do, but what took me back was that when I thought he was not listening to what I was doing online or discussions with family and friends he was actually taking notice.

I do not have the desire for him to become a business person and would like him to teach in some capacity and he will be going to a private school at the age of 11. However I do not intend to control his destiny as long as he finishes his studies and becomes a scholar I will be happy for him to do as he wishes.

I just thought that there is lessons to be learnt for everyone here especially me.

The simplicity of a child's mind is amazing and they do not wrap tenacity with feeble excuse and over analysing like we do

And you know this because you have raised a lot of children and now a proud grandparent? As your avatar suggests?

Lying can be good, can be bad; it has nothing to do with this thread.

Absolutely right, but where is the lie?

I have no intention of taking his money and this incident happened a few months back and I have not taken any money from him and do not intend to.

But If I had told him 'it is all sorted' then I know that I had provided and easy option for him to think 'my dad sorted' and there is no consequences for his action.

But in hindsight there is no lie in the situation I just have not told him the truth that I sorted out the problem

Fortunately for him I came from Saudi from the pilgrimage of Hajj and was in a 'holier' state of mind and when I can back and found out I went into this zen state all relaxed and thinking 'everything happens for the good and for a reason'.

If it happened I would have gave him a right good hiding lol

Richard, you're absolutely right - that is a pretty dastardly deed for a 9 year old to pull off. I think he's being let off pretty easily here, my dad probably have given me a sound beating as well, lol!

Wonder what the reaction would have been if I said.. "well son, he will slowly decompose over the next few weeks and if he's lucky he'll become a new home for baby maggots"...

I totally agree with you about lying to your children. There are occasions where you need to, for the sake of their feelings, or where the actual truth would hurt them in some way.

To the OP: In my house, my word is law. If I didn't want my children to do something, they didn't do it (for the most part, all children test boundaries). I don't need to use guilt, just my position as their father. End of. Of course you can't wind the clock back to prevent the original downloads, but you can control what happens now and in the future. Hope you don't hold the truth back in your sales pages

The kids are getting more audacious these days, I have a good friend who just went through the experience of his 12 year old son apparently ordering over $600 worth of cable tv programming via the phone, over the course of just ONE month - I was totally flabbergasted, I'm not even sure if I'd even know how to order that much programming in just 30 days!

          Hi Paulie,

I can remember kids doing that with the 900 numbers years ago. It is always great to learn a lesson from this and I'm sure some do. The OP's son did a great job and I think the OP was correct in what he did.

After everything is said and done he can go back and explain the situation to his son--> when his son has the age and ability to really understand what he did and what his father did.

            I agree.

When my kids are old enough to appreciate it, I will let them know when I had let them believe what they wanted to believe, in order to teach them a valuable life lesson.

But if I do it too soon, the lesson will be lost.

              Hi Bill,

It's not only the age of the child, but it is also the ability to understand (ie. evaluate and learn from) what happened and how they can do things differently. All this does come from aging somewhat, but most importantly from good parenting.

Most definitely, they'd have to be at the proper age and level of maturity to actually comprehend why you did this to them.

Very true, Ted. Kids tend to lose sight of the value of money especially when they don't see tangible cash changing hands, i.e. with credit card transactions, electronic ones over the computer/phone, and of course dialing 900 numbers as well. As a result, they tend not to realize the magnitude of the offense that they're committing, but that can be easily remedied by having them work for their own money, just as the OP has done with his son.

Very good pointers from other posters.

I believe that parents should tell the truth when it is appropriate and shun the truth when it is appropriate.

For example when a loved ones has died that is close to a little child. Do you tell the child that she is dead never to be seen again or iyou will say 'she has gone somewhere else and you will see her soon enough'? I know which I would say

I was actually making a joke, but it seems like it was taken the wrong way??

I think it's great that your actually making him see the value of hard work, and entrepeneurialship. Thank you to those who said I'm not a father yet, so I obviously have no sense in life.

Guys, I made a joke ... Nice to know you all are that attentive... My parents made me work hard for money, and thats why Im doing so well today.

Lying not lying, joking not joking is not what this is about. I agree (being a grandmother to 12) that you can't always tell a child the absolute truth and what you did was the best thing because you forced your nine year old boy not only to see the error of his action, but to find a solution. Even if it is a solution that can't be used, it a great and well thought out solution and you should be really proud of him. He will not think that he can easily get out of any problem he creates so he will think of that the next time he is tempted. Congratulation you did the right thing and so did your son.

The simplicity of a child's mind is amazing and they do not wrap tenacity with feeble excuse and over analysing like we do
    Hi,
It is really interesting really great points

        Nice..

I'm going to take notes since my 4 year old is just starting to figure out how to use technology. His biggest accomplishment to date was figuring out how to watch "Spongebob Squarepants" on the Wii while I was taking a phone call.

I kind of like the idea of sending him out into the world to make some money though.

Definitely not going to hold back the truth in my sales pages just not ethical

I thought about that but let him try it on his own and see his own successes or even failures.

I am glad that he is working at it like this but make sure that he realizes what the overall economic effect is of his making sandwiches. Make sure that the food is safe to eat. It is a good idea and go with it if you think it will make cash.

It's so funny that young ones have all the ingenuity to come up with unique ideas and as people get older they start to look for that magic bullet that will make them rich. The ones that have done well have the same tenacity and unique creativity as your son does to come up with something of value to be offered.

Hey - good luck to your son and I really hope that everything goes well with his sandwich venture! Chicken tikka masala sandwiches would definitely get my vote.

I really don't want to put a downer on anything, but just be careful about how much work he actually does, when he does it and stuff like that. I'm from the UK and I've come across a couple of cases where the council has stopped kids having a paper round or a saturday job because they were working too many hours/had to start work too early.

        Lol!

Starting your own business is definitely the best thing to do at the moment in the UK, with all the public sector job cuts that are going on. I'm sure that he'll find that it's a great experience and all his friends will be jealous about the money that he's making!

If nothing else, he can use the story in his autobiography when he's rich and famous, a la Alan Sugar or Richard Branson!

  • oh boy, reminds me when I stole my mums cc card and ordered several new phones. I was smart tho, I intercepted the statements.... or so I thought. Eventually when she noticed they weren't coming in, she went to the bank. Then ww3 broke loose.

My kids only 10 months now, but when she gets up to grab something she looks back, waits for me to say no and then does it lol.

And she cries to the point that my gf gets her out of her cot, and lets her sleep in the middle of us.

One night we all fall asleep, next thing you know we hear crying from under the bed as she'd jumped down and must have been exploring until she got bored.

Scared the living sh*t out of us ;<!
