Why MAKING money online is the wrong mindset for newbies

I hear it a lot everywhere I go online:

"How can I make this much money?"

"How can I make more money?"

"How do you make money?"

I'll be perfectly honest when I say that I don't "make" money online, I earn it. "Make" has a connotation that it is somehow gauranteed, easy, simple, structured or a matter of doing grunt work. You don't make any money online, it's not like when you work for someone else and you know exactly how many hours to work and when to clock out. The money doesn't come just because you do work either! For these reasons, I don't consider "Making Money" to be a proper way to describe it.

You are "Making" a business and "Earning" money thanks to successful business ventures.

Newbies beware of anyone who tells you that you can make money with anything online. They are simply trying to sell you something, regardless of how much they make it sound like a system of revenue. If you really want to make money online then you have to build your own business. Don't go off and buy a system for making money, build your own, because no one can make a better system for you than you.

Every person here who is ridiculously successful (in my mind you are either broke or incredibly successful online) has developed scalable systems that work for them.

There's more to internet marketing than affiliate marketing. I agree that you should start off as an affiliate marketer but once you get the gist of things you need to move on and become something more.

Build a Community -> Market Intelligently -> Be Successful

This could not be more true! I could not have said it better myself.

Newbies are too fixated on a step by step money making system. It is about creating your OWN business out of this not just some method. I don't think there is anything wrong with buying a product that presents a workable business model. You simply take this and build it into your business.

    Great post.

While I agree with what you are saying about the mindset of "making money" vs "building a solid business" I don't really agree with what you said in this bit here.

A system (provided it is a genuine system with the proper tools and training in place) can be and HAS been the launch pad for many successful internet marketers online.

There is nothing worse than feeling down about making NO money at all to just totally mess up your chances of ever making money.

Why not use a system to build up to a few K per month and then take what you know and develop your own twist as a leader.

I think expecting people to start completely from scratch and build something of their own will give them a far lower success rate.

Just a trickle of money coming in is enough to change the 'broke' mindset to one of someone that has faith in themselves.

When they see they can make a couple of hundred dollars a day they just have to start thinking 'how can I multiply this?'

If they make a little money to start they can use it as leverage when creating their own thing.

I'm a firm believer in newbies using a system to get off to the greatest start, put money in their pockets, give them FAITH in themselves and give them the confidence to step out and become huge in their own right.

If someone thinks that "Making Money" is somehow guaranteed, then they are a fool and they won't succeed no matter how you phrase it.

So I would continue just saying whatever rolls of the tongue.

    Off to make some money.

I think the real problem is a lack of basic business potential analysis.

For any business to have even a hope of succeeding, it needs to offer something of clear value to a targeted group of consumers.

    • Is there any demand for the product or service?
    • Is that demand great enough to make it a viable business?
The above are some fundamental market research questions that everyone should ask themselves, before starting any type of business.

It is an unfortunate fact that due to the influx of people into IM with a 'worker' mentality, this basic analysis of the success and growth of a business prior to its creation, is often not done.

It often takes newbies a few months/years to realize that what they are building is a business, then it's gravy all the way!

    • Excellent analysis Colin, this is precisely how I feel.

The worker bee mentality is predominent and who can blame them? That's how they have lived their whole lives and how society has taught them to think.

haha this is exactly how I expect people to respond to this thread. No no, our products really do make you feel warm and fuzzy and fill your wallets.

There are maybe 1 in 100 products that actually help someone work through being a newbie and transform them into a business person. Very few people want to do the work to begin with.
