EzineArticles Rejects God, Abraham Lincoln, etc.

For EZA "quality matters", which means a 400 word count minimum.

Rejects:
Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address: about 270 words.
God, The 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:2-17): about 315 words.

Accepted:
EZA, "An Easy Reverse Lookup on Any Cell Phone Number Using a Cell Phone Number Search", 455 words.

I thought he was going to say that his account had just been suspended and that his subject line was the start of his rant.

Heard some rumblings that people are seeing their accounts suspended at EZA now.....that appears to be another quality control method they are employing.

Also - many of us with business degrees are trained to keep word counts to a minimum. To hack and slash unnecessary words.

Is "quality" reflected by increasing word counts? Or by decreasing words? Personally, I think neither by itself is the key.

Maybe EZA should hire English teachers wanting to moonlight for extra cash.

You know how it is when someone takes a knee-jerk reaction to bad news...

They often toss the baby with the bath water, because it is easier to count words than to rely on a bunch of trained monkeys to observe quality...

TEFL teachers targeting IELTS and TOEFL exams focus on a target of 250 words so they'd all have to be retrained.

I emailed God telling him about this. Here's my email and his reply.

        Hey God!

Apparently Ezinearticles doesn't think your ten commandments contain enough words and aren't considered quality content. What are your thoughts on this?

        Zach

        ----

        Hi Zach,

Thank you for your email. I'm in the process of revising my ten commandments so they meet the new Ezinearticles guidelines.

        Regards,

        God

I'm confident I could take 80% of the 400 word articles on EZA, and convey every detail more clearly in 250 words.

Implementing a 400 word minimum rule as a means to raise quality is idiotic. All it does is raise the number of words, not the quality (said with my Captain obvious hat on.)

Actually I did not get the point exactly that he denoting; but yeah EZA "quality matters", which means a 400 word count minimum. Therefore the condition allows to reject the articles bellow 400 words.

Yeah, quantity often DOESN'T mean quality. It is like those comedies where a teacher asks for 1000 words, and the student writes something inane, and often repetitive, to get to 1000 words.

HECK, as shakespeare said, "Brevity is the soul of wit". After all, if you wanted me to give you info on almost any subject, I could probably find a few million words and thousands of thousands of pages, but you probably wouldn't like it and would likely find it worthless. A short, honest, and direct text would be best.

Yes, this is why site's SHOULD have human editorial/quality control processes in place.

Wow...my opinion seems to be different than most opinions in this thread so far...

I personally think longer articles should be incentivized.

Which do you think are more prone to abuse, long or short articles?

Even if they are abusing, longer articles still require more time and effort to create...plus, with a viable human quality control process, these articles can be weeded out easily.

How many of those short article writers do you really think are producing content comparable to God or Abraham Lincoln?

One is MORE prone to abuse, IMHO.

Very clever headline. :-) And I agree with the point. EZA's 400 word minimum requirement, in NO way, assures quality. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was about 2-3 minutes, whereas the main speaker that day spoke for 2 hours. And only history geeks like me know who that main speaker was. :-) Everyone remember Lincoln.

p.s. Oh, the main Gettysburg dedication speaker was Edward Everett. :-)

I agree. Surely there will be some 'fasle negatives' but if they are struggling with resources then boosting the word count is probably the simplest way to cut out a lot of the rot.

If they spend less time focusing on the pile that is more than likely bad, and more time on the pile that is more than likely good, surely the end result will be more quality articles approved quicker.

I doubt they are out there to produce an adward winning resource. They are after AdSense clicks so have to do the least amount of work to keep their traffic source flowing.

Definitely, the shorter is more prone to abuse...

And yet some of the best writers on the planet write short articles...

        Tough choice...

Improving quality means weeding out the trash content...

And to keep from throwing the baby out with the bath water, they will need to teach their editors to scan for comprehension, before making a decision on the validity of an article.

I don't care for EZA's new 400 minimum word rule nor for all the chatter about having to write longer articles --- like in the 800 to 1,00 word range to be competitive.

I predict with everybody writing longer articles the price of font will go sky high!

This afternoon I ran out of dots for the "J"s and crosses for the "T"s and had to drive all over town to find a font store that sold both. I got home only to discover that I had mistakenly purchased dots for "I"s instead of "j"s (the two don't interchange) and had to go back and search for more dots! They are already expensive enough.

Brace yourself for higher prices and possibly even a world wide font shortage when everybody starts writing longer articles

They made that change about a week ago following the recent Google algortithm change which hurt EZA's search engine rankings.

Forgive me for disagreeing, but the truth is that only an excellent writer is able to write a substantial 250 words article, or even a substantial 400 – 500 words article.

250 words articles are merely an introduction to the subject.

I never have a problem getting articles approved at Ezine. They sometimes approve them same day or at most 1-2 days. What doesn't get you approved is bad grammar, not delivering what you promised in the title, or spelling. Which one have you had problems with?

    Here's the thing though...

If you write a long article AND it's of high quality, people will naturally stay on site longer...leading to a low bounce rate...

As far as I can see, Google sees value in a site that can keep people around longer.

Of course, there are a million and one "grey areas". What if people click a interesting Google Ad on a long article and leave after 10 seconds, rather than staying for 20 minutes to read the entire article?

...and, just people stay to read an article for 20 minutes because its long and its engaging, does that necessarily mean that it is accurate?

As mentioned before, I do think that shorter articles are more inclined to be abused.

      Howie,
That's a great point. Today I read a blog posting by Jim Morris over at his NicheBot blog that was very long, very informative and extremely valuable concerning Google's "Farmer" update.

It kept me on his site for a good amount of time and the content was so engaging I didn't even notice anything else on his blog.

In my opinion, that is what the perfect article for syndication would look like because it did it's job by providing value and keeping me engaged.

If you have a chance to see the article there is also a lot of comments on his blog which means folks are reading his stuf and than taking the time to actually comment on it.

These comments are not the garbage spam comments but well thought out postings which again provides tangible proof in the value of his original post.

I also saw his post mentioned in a private forum so he is also receiving viral activity from it.

That form of proof really validates in my eyes the type of content that should be getting published but unfortunately many marketers are not taking the time to do so in support of their online business.

Here is the link to the article in case you want to see what I am talking about - Google Algorithm Change Shift ‘N Update 2011 – Were you hit by the Farmer?

      It is a great read.
