Is Go Daddy Backordering worth it?

Hi,

I spoke to Go Daddy yesterday about a site that expired 24th Jan, they advised me to put a backorder on it and they would try to secure it or refund the money.

Today I get an email saying the site is available 8th March (coincidence!), but on reading more on the internet I believe this is not that straight forward.

Does anybody have any experience of this service? Does it work? Or does anybody have any ideas on time it could take?

Thanks for the advice

I've used it in the past and it's a good service. If you don't get the domain you wanted, you can place the backorder onto another domain.

There have been times that I got the domain I wanted, but more times that I didn't and changed the backorder to yet another domain.

It's worth the money IF you really want the domain or if you have other domains in mind in case the one you wanted got taken anyway, even though you had a backorder on it.

I learned from GoDaddy that whoever has the backorder first gets the domain, and sometimes they will tell you if someone has one on it already. But that also is only for them and doesn't include any other registrars who might have clients with a backorder ahead of yours.

It worked good enough for me to get the .com domain that I already had the .net for. I'd use it again if I really wanted a specific .com.

Yes, you could really do this and it does work. This is a great way to make money flipping domains too because you backorder a valuable domain that no one else catches and can resell at a high price...

I totally agree with Mike. You could use a number of back ordering services and place an order for a number of high value domains that could result in you successfully securing some top domains that could resell at auction. One of the best performing services I have had experience with and is completely free to use is www. domainmonster.com

My experience with using GoDaddy, buying over a thousand domains, has taught me that GoDaddy "backorder" doesn't work - and I have never gotten a refund.
...what I mean is, they'll do anything to make a buck. And, this backorder thing is a bunch of hog-wash. When a good domain expires, GoDaddy holds on to the rights to the domain for a number of weeks, leaving the original owner time to renew if they forgot. During this time, if they find a higher bidder for the domain, they sell it to them.
Don't ask me how this completely works, all I know is that when I had the domain FANTASYBASEBALL.tv expire and made no plans to renew, a few weeks after the domain expired I got several emails telling to hurry and renew it, because GoDaddy has a buyer and they wanted to buy it before GoDaddy could sell it to the buyer they had lined up.

Now, I know that that domain name always had a backorder, but these guys were telling me that they were selling it for $300...how they knew, they would not tell me.

To make a long story short, it cost $119 dollars to renew the inactive domain and pay for the 1 year registration...then, I sold it for $1200.

So, if you ask me, unless you're wanting some oddball domain name, forget ever getting it, unless you buy it from the current owner...which, you can email and make an offer to through their WHOIS information or through a number of services that will inquire for you.

NO NEVER, NEVER NEVER. THE ONLY TIME YOU WILL GET YOUR DESIRED BACKORDER NAME IS WHEN NOBODY ELSE WANTS IT. IT TOOK FIVE YEARS TO USE MY BACKORDER WHILE CHANGING THE NAME EVERY TIME THEY FAILED. THEY CHECK ONE TIME A DAY AFTER THE NAME DROP DATE. AND USUALLY BEFORE IT DROPS. THEY REALLY DON'T CARE ABOUT IT ENOUGH TO FIND OUT WHEN EACH EXT RELEASES THEIR NAMES. FORGET GODADDY. I HATE THE SEXISM TOO. AND THEIR SCUMMY ADULT TEMPLATES THEY MAKE AVAILABLE. TRASH. I HAVE HUNDREDS OF DOMAIN NAMES WITH THEM BUT, IT JUST TOO EXPENSIVE TO MOVE THEM ALL AT ONCE. ION CUBE IS CRITICAL, BUT AFTER 3 MONTHS TRYING TO GET SUPPORT ON THAT MATTER, I JUST MOVED HOSTING TO HOSTGATOR. LOVE LOVE LOVE HOSTGATOR.
