I am in utter dis-belief right now. I just got off the phone with one of my coaching clients, and she didn't even know how to do a google search, she barely knew what a google search was.

Now I'm not sure what lesson I'm suppose to learn from this, but if I had to guess it would be dumb down my products as much as possible.

I dont I'm even gonna use the word auto responder in my next product. I am actually going to think of hillbilly name for everything now.

        Well, good thing that they don't know how to do a good search. If they did, it's completely possible that they could find this post and read how you are making fun of them.

        On a serious note, keep in mind that your customers are paying you for a product or service and deserve to be treated with a certain amount of respect.

          Oh I know I asked her if it was ok to mention it on a forum, we shared a laugh over it because I thought she was joking at first.
          It's not like I'm mentioning her name and her domain.

          And that was her free consult, we set up a paid meeting for next week. she is very pleased with the service.

              I didnt mean to come off angry at all, I totally embraced it, and I felt like I handled it well. I felt very accomplished because I was targeting the newest of noobs.

              I dont think you can find any newer than that. Its one for the record books that's for sure.

                Agreed. The statistic (at least according to Joe Girard) is that most people know about 250 people. 1 person tells, and they tell, etc. etc.

          Don't put too much stock into what either Mike or me have to say. Not only are we total noobs who couldn't find our way out of a (oh wait, that's another story), but we're also drunk noobs. Now, if on the other hand your question has to deal not with particle accelerators, but proper drinking etiquette (oh wait, we have none, we just guzzle it). Forget I said anything. I'm just a drunk noob.

          Hello all,

          A few days ago I was contacted by a young man, in his late 20's, via Skype (because of my nickname), who has recently taken up a position in Riyadh as a Medical Rep.

          At present, he has no social contacts in Saudi, hence the contact.

          He can read and write English very well, and when at home mixes primarily with westerners in his own age group.

          He was astounded to discover that it is possible to earn an income via the Internet. In fact he was as astounded as I was when I discovered the same thing a few years ago.

          He was equally astounded to discover that it is not necessary to meet one's customers face to face.

          He is in fact the same age as my daughter, whose only knowledge related to the Internet, is to keep track of her friends and add posts to Facebook, and do the occasional Google search.

          Both young people have now asked me to teach them what they need to know in order to start earning an income on line and I will do my very best to help them.

          The point is, there are millions of people of all ages from young to old, to whom a computer is merely a tool that allows them to to send emails and very little more. Very few of them even had access to computers during their early years.

          Certainly my children did not. The schools in South Africa did not have any form of computer studies or training at that time either. So when we eventually obtained our first computer, it was a major event in our lives.

          It really is important not to assume that everyone has had the same opportunities that you or I may have had. Simply find out what they do or do not know and then take it from there.

        Hi Nicholas,

        I can totally relate to your disbelief about the google search, although I think perhaps the title of your post may have been a bit harsh and attracted a few comments...

        If someone can make a truckload of cash in an offline business and has no need for a website or the internet... then hats off to them. Why would you bother with something you don't need.

        Most businesses these days do need a website and using the internet as a resource is where you start your research. A google search is the like ABC's.

        How long would you be in business if you didn't know how to write up an invoice?

          I do agree with the title, it may be harsh, It was really just to state the fact that some new internet marketers dont know the slang, so it would help them if we could just figure out a way to explain in the simplest of terms.

          I don't want to sell someone a product they don't understand, Isn't internet marketing about helping others make money online.

          I'm not happy with selling someone a product they cant understand, and not make money with as a result.

    It's tough. In some circles others are amazed at the extent of my knowledge. In others (i.e., here) I feel as green as grass in spring. I've found that I really need to know my target and write to their ability (love survey research as a way to get at this).

    If I assume they know too much than I loose them. If I assume they don't know that much, than I get stuck with complaints that I'm selling the same old, "intro crap".

    Gotta know my markets!

    I don't think there's any reason to call attention to what you feel is your customers' ignorance, unless you feel a need to be especially condescending.

    Why not just provide the services and information that they want and need?

    Now, if you're attracting unqualified customers / clients that you're unprepared to service, I'd say there may be an issue with your marketing message. Just another interpretation of "WOW! Some Newbies Really Dont (sic) Know ANYTHING!"

    I wonder if you would appreciate your instructor saying you were dumb for not knowing something that you were paying them to teach you.

    Let me ask you do you know what an I.L.S. or maybe you have heard of it but would you know how to execute it properly.

    By the way an I.L.S has nothing to do with the interenet or making money online it stands for instrument landing system, pilots use it to land the aircraft when there is no visibilty.

    The point is when I was learning how to fly and I asked what an ILS approach was my instructor explained it to me and later taught me how to properly execute it.

    In his world that was common knowledge and I was paying him to teach me his knowledge not to laugh at me behind my back.

    I have ran into people who didn't know how to charge their battery on their laptops. Does that make them stupid or dumb? Nope it just means they don't know how to charge their laptop.

    If I was looking for an internet marketing coach on this forum and I ran across this post you would be the last person I paid out my hard earned money to. You may want to think about all the newbies on this forum and how many of them are looking for coaching at this very moment before you start calling your students idiots.

    By the way I was born in Eastern Kentucky where I biggest holiday was "Hillbilly Days" and my little town was home to 70% of the wealthiest people in Kentucky.

    I am well aware of the fact that everyone doesn't know everything about everything.

    I embrace that fact, you should of seen me, trying to set up my first hosting account.

    There is alot of stuff I don't know There is alot of stuff I don't care to know

    I have helped alot of people make alot of money and will continue to do so.

    Actually "hillbilly Days sounds like alot of fun. I have met and been to some of the wildest parties, visiting down south.

    Nicholas,

    No need to dumb down your products. They are what they are. At least you have a customer that is eager to learn. I'm not sure of a good way to tell them one on one, but if you had a video or ebook, you could always mention for them to look it up on the internet using a search engine. For example, if they want to learn about the ins and outs of PPC, tell them to look it up since you won't have time to explain it.

        I don't see the title as anything other than a blunt comment.

        We all make dumb comments and there are very simple things we don't know when we start out. It's a good time to learn to laugh at yourself - and realize that because people are joking doesn't mean they are making fun of you.

        I got my first computer in 2000 - gift from my son. I turned it on, started playing around - and then had to call him at his office to see how to turn the thing off (I was afraid I'd break something if I did it wrong).

        How dumb is that? Of course my son told his flight crews and I was teased for months about it - but so what? It WAS funny - but even when they were laughing they were complimenting me on taking the plunge.

        A few months later I struggled with html and writing to build my own first site - and realized I had no idea how to get the site from my computer to the internet (can you say ftp?).

        Because the questions are often so basic - we forget what our own questions were - yet many of us had simple things we needed to learn.

        nicholas - make it a light bulb moment and create a How To page that gives concise info on the absolute basics of using google search - of what the ads are that appear on top and right of those pages, and answer every simple question you can think of. You could add short explanations such as what a sequential autoresponder does and how it's different from the "email responder" in their hosting. Or, if you send weekly emails, include a "newbies questions answered" section in it once in a while.

    That's not surprising. Some older ppl or technophobes don't have have or use a computer. They don't even know what "a google" is never mind. One day I was talking to my aunt and mentioned about a "blog". She had no idea what a blog was. "A Blog? What's a blog?" I thought I was a technophobe, but some are worse off than me in that aspect.

      well an older person I would understand, but she was 20 years old. actually alot of people dont understand auto responder or other silly words us marketers use. Thank god I knew what a google search was or I would still be a factory worker.

        Everyone of us has trouble communicating in written text sometimes. Use of smileys don't really help incoherent communication. If you're incoherent without smilies, you'll be incoherent with them as well.

        Not to belabor a point, but how would your use of smilies change the hard edge of your subject line " WOW! Some Newbies Really Dont (sic)Know ANYTHING!" ?

        I am a newbie too. And I ask a lot of questions.

        Because I believe it's one good way to learn. Asking questions.

        Ask, and ye shall receive.

        Does it make me a dumb? Perhaps, to some, yes.

    kay king great idea.

    I do have to agree I have also made some very dumb mistakes in my life, I dont think a day goes by where im not laughing at myself for something.

    I have learned many valuable lessons, from the mistakes I have made, which I am thankful I Recognized my mistakes so I can learn from them.

    Yes, this is right. That lady that was helping the Nigerian scammers (the one who I helped the Secret Service put away) didn't know how to do a basic Google search, either, and pretty much stayed away from that sort of thing. Can you imagine how much more dangerous she could have been if she had been more Internet-savvy?

    We need to remember that some newbies really are new to ALL of this.

    I think we can all learn a good lesson from this post.
    We can be careful how we word things so as not to offend or be too harsh.
    We can make sure we don't assume our clients know what we are trying to teach them. I remember when I saw my first code and it was like any other foreign language. I didn't have a clue what it meant. And lol hopefully my comments won't set off another tirade. We need to remember we can learn much from this forum or we can just bicker and not accomplish anything.
