Follow these steps:

1) To write an ebook first you have to choose your subject/niche.

2) Research the market to find out if your subject is wanted.

Use these sites to make a killer niche research:

Amazon.com Bestsellers: The most popular items in Books

Bestseller Books, Books Online, New Books - Barnes*&*Noble

Magazines.com Magazine Subscriptions

trendwatching.com Previous Monthly Briefings

List your goals on 43 Things

TREND HUNTER - #1 in Trends - Fashion Trends, Tech, Style, Design, Pop Culture and Marketing

Google Trends

3) Use the "Word Tracker" tool to find out how many times a month people search and look for such a product or information.

4) After you have chosen your topic and made research,start writing your ebook and use tools like Word or Open Office that it is free.
After wrote it convert in PDF (you can find this feature in word and openoffice if i remember well

5) Create an ebook ecover for it.You can use many free software online to create an ecover,look for example this:

or hire TOP designers to do that,like Cheap Mini Site Design | Mini Site Graphics or MINISITE DESIGN GRAPHIC AND ECOVER DESIGN GRAPHICAt a PRICE ANYONE Can AFFORD (very cheap!)

6) Then you need to put it in front of potential customers and publish it!
A free way to do this is through social networking sites or giving away free chapters!

Here's my foolproof method:

(1) Research, Research and more research. Don't go crazy, just know your subject

(2) build a mindmap or outline of what the ebook will entail. This will help you write your ebook much faster and ideas to spawn out. Seems that Eng 101 professor wasn't so dumb after all

(3) Get a killer graphic representing your ebook cover. Use WSO services or a site like fiverr. Just make it look quality as well

(4) Get someone to review it for a quick testimonial, hopefully positive

(5) You can write out your ebook in Microsoft Word or even openOffice (writer). Save the file. Use a free pdf converter. The best one i've found is CutePdf (google it)

(6) Once in pdf format, market as usual

This is a very good outline and exactly what I do for my ebooks. If you are having trouble with how to create an ebook, just follow these basic steps and the mindmap is very important so that you don't get off track when writing.

The easiest way is to write it up as a Word document and then save it as a PDF. That will give you a simple, no-frills ebook.

Both of these pieces of advice are solid. You can also use Adobe Acrobat itself.

Fundamentally, an "ebook" is any reasonably lengthy document in PDF format, and there are a great many programs out there which will allow you to "print" any document to a new PDF file instead of to a printer - basically operating like a "Save As PDF" feature that works in every (printable) program you have on your computer. (Some of these programs do a good job of preserving clickable links; others do not.)

So you can honestly use almost any program you like to create your ebook, then just save it off as a PDF file.

I use DeskPDF. As CDarlock says, I choose the DeskPDF as my 'printer' and then when I want to create the PDF I simply press print.

I use ewriterPro V2
Its a program I've used for sometime.

Great little desktop ebook creator, it has a few ads in it,(not mine)

I went and bought a license for it 2 years or so ago and its great. ($10)

You can download it free from loads of places. A great tool.

I will generally use a Microsoft Word Document and then will use a PDF converter to convert to PDF. There are other programs out there but word works fine. And always make sure to convert to PDF if it is not already obvious to you.

Wow, where was this information two weeks ago lol. Like everybody else said, I download Open Office for free since Microsoft Word expired. Then I downloaded the free Adobe Acrobat Reader, where I get 5 free converts to pdf format. Wrote a simple 13 page guide for newbies. Bought a website with Godaddy for $55 then signed my product up with Clickbank for $50. And a week later, I'm number 1 on Yahoo and several sites on the front page of Google.

Main thing to do is promote your product and be 100% truthful with what your product is and is about.

It looks like lots of people have already given you plenty of good information on the technicalities of creating an eBook, so I thought I'd just recommend this:

Tiffany Dow (a very well-respected marketer with a great reputation as a writer) has a product called Building an eBook Empire, which is excellent if producing eBooks is something you're really interested in. It also comes with a bonus report called, "How to Write a Great Product When You're Not a Professional Writer."

Between these two guides, she teaches you how to choose and research a niche, create the actual product, and then promote and market it in several different ways. I bought it, loved it, and highly recommend it!
