Tell-A-Friend...Your Experiences?

Has anyone had any great experience with...

"Tell A Friend"...

I give a free gift on my website for the visitor to "opt in"...

Then on the next page is a form that the visitor can use to enter his friend's email addresses...

And if he does that...

He gets another gift from me...

QUESTION: Does anyone else have this script on their website, and if so, is it working well for you?

I've gotten, like, 135 "friends" email addresses but I can't market to them until they opt in and confirm...LOL

What's your experience with this?

Thanks for your responses in advance...

You could cross check how many of those 135 emails have since signed up to your list to get some idea how successful it is.

Which TAF script are you using?

I am looking at a few now and am curious about what people think about the ones they are using.

I have been intrigued by the Viral Inviter script... haven't tried it personally, but it looks pretty cool:

I used to have a tell a friend script on my page but removed it. Was not sure if it was worth it.

In my experience there are lot's of disadvantages to "tell a friend" scripts.

Those like above where someone gets a gift for referring, say, 6 friends - normally they end up with 6 "Micky Mouse" email addresses.

Others may tell their friends about your product - but how do you know if they are at all interested? Your customers "friends" are not necessarily looking to purchase your product.

The viral inviter type scripts (none specifically!) normally use your customers address book to harvest email addresses and unless they manually edit the resulting list to bar some contacts (who would bother to do that?) - you will end up with your customer "spamming" his friends which may include his Doctor, Dentist, Auntie Jo, Uncle Tom Cobbely and all . . . . Do you really want that?

I am sure there may be some benefits to TAF - but I've yet to find them.

    Just my thoughts . . . . .

    My 10.52 cents

TAF is a way of allowing something that is normally hard to become easy.

Easy is a cornerstone of viral.

Email TAFs are dated for a lot of users, but for new users only just discovering the internet/email they can still make life easy.

Even powerusers have moments where they read some new report and want to pass it on.

    Make it easy.

Remember that moment does not last long and you need to capitalize it.

Now if your idea is to reward people by spamming their address book for gifts thats what happens - its easy for them to do that.

Modern versions of TAFs include facebooks app invites, retweeting in twitter and the embed codes in youtube to name a few.
