What do you do with domains...

You no longer use or bought on a whim etc.

I usually just let mine die or give them away.

I've just been browsing namecheap and noticed you can sell your unused domains on there for free, (been with em years and only just noticed it ) so I've bunged about 3 of mine on at $50 each. be interesting to see if they sell or not.

NameCheap would not be the best to sell. I don't think they have any type of promotion except when someone types the name into the registration search box.

List them on Godaddy, Flippa, Afternic, NamePros, DNForum, and especially SEDO.

Sounds like it's worth a try, I'd never heard of that feature either. I'd be interested to hear how you do! I have many domains I shouldn't have bought and just leave sitting there...

I've sold on Godaddy and Namepros but I've never gotten SEDO to do anything for me. I don't ever remember being accepted into any of their auctions. I'm not exactly shopping for a new car with the 34¢ parking revenue I've earned this month. I'm finished with der diebe.

SEDO is for more premium domains yes and it is sometimes confusing which domains get in and why.

The problem for normal listings is that there are so many names on SEDO that it is hard to get traffic. If you think you can get at least a $150 offer on a name, then I suggest featuring your listing on SEDO which costs $49.

I've sold domains for more money on Sedo and Afternic than anyplace else. Never got to auction. I place a fixed priced (reasonable, like $250 for most) and get offered that price for a domain I paid $9 for. Did sell one on my own just emailing people that I thought might be interested for $900 also.

I've never used NameCheap. Sounds like a good thing though. I wonder if the domains have to be registered with them to sell there... all mine are with GoDaddy. If so, I might just buy a couple there to try this out...

Used to I would just let them auto renew and eventually find something to do...however in this day and age I usually just turn off auto renew on the unused domains and let them go....figure if I haven't done anything with them in a year then chances are I wont be doing anything with them at all....

I collect them, and keep them all.

Sometimes I give them pet names, and ... err... what we we talking about?

If the names are really good, I sell them. If not, I let them go quietly into the night.

I have sold one domain for $500, but usually don't get anywhere near that amount for a typical sale. I'm happy to get $20 for a domain I'm not using because if I don't use it within a year I like to pass them on to someone who will.

I'm not a domain flipper, I'm just a compulsive domain buyer.

*Is it possible to sell the domain names which are not registered by Namecheap at Namecheap Marketplace?
No, there should be sold and bought only domains registered by NameCheap.*

Or you could park your domain names to bodis.com.

The site says that once you park their domains to them,
they'll add keywords and ads directly related to your domain. Once visitors click on the ads, you earn a profit.

Personally I haven't tried it out since I'm using all of my domains, but it looks good IMO.

I look at wasting domains about like I look at wasting food. I have my share of
duds but at least throw up a quickie word press site and repurpose the domain for something. (You read a lot of foolishness on here about selling crap sites on Flippa for huge bucks. Ain't happenin'. Junk is junk and the people who go to Flippa aren't stupid.) I'm doing a short post card campaign right now for two domains. I'm expecting to sell them for around $1,000 each. I got six different cards printed, three for each, so I can split test. (Was going to include the images but the graphics people sent me the images in a PDF format and they won't save separately) I bought around 150 domains last year and renewed about 50 others. Using coupons, I usually pay around $7.67 at Godaddy and I've quit using everyone else. I expect both of these to sell at or around my price and this will take care of all my domain & hosting costs and part of my promotions for the year. Domains aren't my main income. They just fascinate me and I'm constantly fooling around trying to discover why some sell and some never do.

I've never had any luck selling domains at GoDaddy or SEDO. Zero interest.

However, I have had more success by mentioning the domains to my subscribers and asking for offers to be submitted by a certain deadline. The highest 'sealed' bid wins.

I've had much better success at taking the bull by the horns and getting
the domains in front of people who can use them. Just don't spend huge
money doing it. I'm down to about thirty (city)(specialty)attorney.coms
and I'm taking bids of 10 of them right now. Small ads in specialty legal
newspapers work much better (and with much less time) than emails. I
have to get creative because basically I'm cheap. Post cards work but only
for those names you know will sell at a good price.

I just let them die. I just dropped 50 last week. Some of them have already been snapped up by new owners. Sometimes I buy a bunch and then change my mind about the project and then just turn off auto-renew and let them drop off when their time comes.

If I don't think I can do anything more with them, I just let them drop when the time comes. I have my domains at several places besides Godaddy, and I typically only turn auto-renew on for the domains that I'm 100% certain I'm going to keep, so that I don't inadvertently end up renewing domains I don't have any use for.

Had a fair few on sedo parking for years, got about $11.73 for about 2 years traffic! Waste of time, took a few good ones and put a lander / wp up, monitized and bosh, a few hundred a month from them...

Sedo is ok for selling, but even that is crappy sometimes, had 2 domains that were aged, exact match to 2 of the TOP searched for terms in last 2 years (2009/10) and they said they were worth $400 and $650 each... sold one last november for high $x,xxx so they were WAY out!

Namecheap is cool as if you are not using them its worth trying to sell them for free!

Chuck a wp on them, drive some traffic and cpa offer banners and put them on Flippa or ebay to get shot of the ones you do not want or are expiring!

    Parking sucks also!

I park them with SEDO and list them for sale at the same time. This way you get a share of the adsense revenue and they are listed for sale on a very reputable site. That is what I usually do if I am not going to build a site for then right away.

I normally let them die... but this is something I'll look at in the future.

The other day someone emailed me asking if I wanted the .net version as I already have the .org. Not sure what the price would be but it wouldn't take long to contact other website owners and offer it to them.

Didn't realize you could do that on Namecheap... will remember that for next time.

    Thanks

If the domains are aged ie. more than 2 years old I would definitely keep them and let them "mature" further in Google. Just slap something on there such as wordpress or even a simple one page site with any web template. The point is to just get it up there and let it keep aging.

Domains/sites that are aged are worth at least the domain registration costs to many. Plus getting cheap hosting is easy nowadays. Hosts such as hostgator or bluehost allow unlimited domains and most certainly have fantastico available for one click installs for wordpress.

If you're doing internet marketing/seo for a living you will or at least should have some use for these domains/sites in the future.

Anyways, that's just what I would do and actually do, do. ;-)

Interesting. A simple template would allow the page to go up quickly. Hmmmm.

Not sure it will make a big difference, but a couple of Sundays worth of work would get them all up.

Domains as "real estate" is one of those early adopter deals. The people who understood it and scooped the one-word gems up are those who have and will make the serious money. I've got a few I'm sitting on but, with new TLDs coming on, I sense it will be more difficult to sell down the road.

The huge deals have mostly been done, IMHO.

Since you don't know if your domain(s) have any value - it's best to first get an expert opinion.

You can ask for a free appraisal from DNForum users - Welcome to DNF.com

Then if your domain has no value - you can try selling it for a few bucks on SitePoint

If it has any value - you can either sell it on DNForum directly (you will be selling to domainers so don't expect to make a lot of money) or you can list them for sale on places like mentioned above.

If you are more adventurous, you could invest a little making a WordPress site adding a few articles and selling on Flippa.

I would build it up with many different income streams and then sell it based on the value of the website. You can include affiliate revenue, commission based revenue, even set up a business model such as a lawn care site and earn income from lawn care jobs. Have all these in one, and sell it as one big package. Then move onto the next website.

Kim: I have tried a new approach to managing my domains, and while it's a bit more work than parking them on Sedo or similar sites where you earn very little with them, I have set them up on a separate site and am slowly adding sales pages to go along with each domain that I have for sale.

It's a bit of work, but so far things have been going very well. Since most of the domains I buy are intended for people wanting to start a local or home based Internet business, once I get the site completed I intend to actively market the domains on Kijiji and other local market places. I'm a lot happier with this than I ever was with domain parking.

Bonus is, you can add links to affiliate sites or products and also post the domains for sale on goDaddy or Namecheap at the same time for added exposure. Now, if I could just quit buying them I'd be all set. But so far, I've done okay with most of the names I have bought and sold - plus - it keeps me out of mischief thinking up new ways to promote them.
