Hi everyone,

I have never used press releases to attract links or to gain traffic. What are your experiences with press releases and what methods do you use to get them seen? Is it expensive?

Thanks in advance.

I use SEO press releases for backlinks and traffic to my own sites, and I write them for clients also.

They DO work, if the writing is good and the keywords fit your target market.

I use both free distribution sites (like PRLog.org)and paid sites (like WebWire.com and PRNine.com for about $20 per release; and PRWeb.com starting at about $80 per release).

Stay away from distributing them on "100s of free distribution sites" -- they're mostly spam-gardens which will devalue the message in your release.

Thanks very much for your feedback!

How many distribution sites would you recommend using? Would using the two you mentioned above be enough?

Also what's the benefit of using a paid service over a free one?

      Many thanks!

        You're welcome!

I use PRLog.org (free) mostly for backlinks. The paid sites distribute to more locations (so more backlinks), including Google News and other online news sites -- which increases the possibility of your release being picked up by traditional media if it's truly 'newsworthy'.

But I've had PRLog.org releases appear in Google News, too. It really depends on the topic.

And I've had several PRLog.org releases generate hundreds of backlinks over the course of several months, so it's a good option. (They now have a paid option as well, which I haven't tested yet.)

Probably the best tip I can give you is to write multiple press releases over the course of several weeks or months -- a press release campaign.

The mistake most people make is using them as a one-time traffic or backlink solution. But a campaign creates publicity -- visibility -- which makes your site (or product or service) look like it's appearing everywhere and keeps your brand in the news.

A press release campaign builds backlinks and traffic, and also develops the 'know, like, trust' factor that precedes people making a decision to buy. It breaks down sales resistance. Your name becomes familiar, and people feel comfortable with your sales message.

So for best results, plan to send out a press release every week for several weeks during your launch, targeting different keywords and pages on your website.

You can Google "press release distribution sites" and find several lists. Also, my SEO Press Release Kit WSO (see the link in my sig) includes an Excel spreadsheet list of 80 press release distribution sites with Page Ranks indicated.

It's best to check with distribution sites individually to find out their requirements, the topics they accept and the kinds of links they allow, then compile a list that fits your needs.

I never spend anything on press releases, but get great results. There are a few WSO's that show you how to do it, and the best sites for submission. Daniel Tan offers a great one... if my WSO ever gets posted I offer some info in there too. Daniel Tan's is for press release syndication, and its great. I got about 26,000 syndications using his techniques.

I hope you don't mind me asking a few questions in your thread too, it just seems you are getting some good answers.

Essencially speaking, what is a press release? A promotional article, meant to hype up my site? I have been becoming increasingly interested in this aspect of online marketing, and was hoping to gain enough knowledge, so that I could get my feet wet, so to speak

I have checked out this PRlog site, and it seems great. Before I give it a shot, I would like to know what exactly I should do, so I don't mess up and/or make a serious mistake with my press release. I've been wondering things like - how many links do I put? Where exactly to link back in the press release? What will happen ocne I submit? Where will the article appear? etc...
Also, should press releases be pumped out in quantity (if I can maintain quality of course), or is one every once in a while good? Also, can I fire out the same press release via multiple channels/sites?
I simply am seeking to find the most optimal way to gain exposure, backlinks, traffic etc...

    Thanks

A press release (or news release) announces some interesting and useful information about your business/product/website, etc. It's usually written in 3rd person and includes verifiable facts, rather than only opinions, to deliberately AVOID sounding like hype.

PRLog allows 3 plain links in the body of the text. I use them to point to the website I'm trying to create backlinks for and drive traffic to.

The press releases appear in the categories you choose on PRLog as well as on websites which subscribe to PRLog's RSS news feed.

Yes, you can distribute your releases via different sites, as long as they accept them.

And increasingly, the way to get traffic and attention online is by using great content, rather than hype or tricks.

If I could, I'd thank your post 10 times.
Got all my answers thanks; I think I'll give it a shot now.
1 last question - Can I use an existing article of mine? Or must the content be totally unique and unpublished?

      You're welcome!

First, check to see if your article is written so that it sounds like someone is 'reporting' on the topic (3rd person). Articles and press releases are two different forms.

Then I would take a few minutes to rewrite at least the first paragraph, if not the whole thing. Use your first paragraph to make your 'news' announcement, then fill in more background details in the body. Try to include an interesting quote, if possible.

      Good luck!
