UK Marketer Picks Wrong Niche and Gets Terrorist Charges

UK information marketer creates a physical product, sells it over the internet and bags himself some terrorist charges (and then some).

It was called the Anarchist Cookbook (based on a 1970s book) and sold online.

News report states he sold over 3000 copies in a wide variety of countries.

Apparently his intention wasn't to arm and teach terrorists - it was purely financial and... er... very short sighted:

BBC News - Portsmouth man guilty of publishing 'terror handbook'

Lets hope that his buyers were like the guys in the IM niche who like to buy products and NOT take action ;-)

I have owned the Anarchists Cookbook.

Did you realize they have bomb-making recipes in that book?

I could see how that could be perceived as a "terror handbook" in today's environment.

I've owned it as well. Only because it was being widely sold on eBay for a while by many different sellers. This was back when ebooks were being sold on there. I wanted to see what the fuss was about. I probably have it on a hard-drive somewhere around here. I hope it doesn't get me into trouble some day...

edit - and by the way, there was way more than 3,000 of those sold on ebay.

Yeah, I bought it from ebay as an ebook in the late 90's.

The computer I had it on had a catastrophic hard drive failure, and it was lost to memory.

I found it a curious read.

I have trouble thinking anyone who wanted that information couldn't find it ... either online somewhere else in the world ... or through the type of friends they might have.

So this appears to be more political and PR c**p than any sensible solution.

Very much like a headline I love regarding the TSA ... Getting Naked: Conditioning for Compliance.

It is so much easier to address symptoms than problems. Just saying.

        I agree 100%.

All one needs is the transcripts from the Timothy McVay trial in order to get a proven bomb recipe.

And for those looking for a much larger range of bomb-making techniques, it is usually best to join the military and get access to their training materials.

When I was younger, I knew a guy in Texas who had built a homemade hydrogen bomb for kicks in the early 90's. Yes, he was strange like that.

        He used a ****** ** *****, a *** *******, and put a **** ******* in the ***** ****** and put ********* through the **** into the *** ***** *** *****, then ********* **** ***** to the *** *******.

He set the process in motion in the woods, and vacated the premises. He waited for the bang and went back to check the damage.

I went out to the woods to see the damage that was done. He had managed to flatten trees in about a 20-yard wide circle.

        LOL

They can prevent me from buying the Anarchists Cookbook, but they cannot steal the knowledge from my brain, unless they put me six feet under.

          According to the BBC:

'Terence Brown, 47, of Portsmouth, made CDs at home containing thousands of pages of information on topics such as "how to make a letter bomb"'

Sounds a little silly on Mr Brown's part.

Bill, if this was really perceived as a serious threat, I find it curious why it took them so long to take action - with thousands of copies out there, not only in physical form but stored on hard drives and presumably in the 'cloud' as well, this knowledge is going to live on forever.

If this type of homemade bomb-making is really such a present and imminent danger, then there's no sense at all in why they're glorifying and permitting this in Hollywood movies and even on prime-time public television - I can recall seeing at least several crime and spy shows in just the last few weeks alone that showed their protagonists and/or criminals cooking up some kind of home-made explosive from common household items!

Not to mention the complete instructions for preparing laboratory-grade LSD.

Plus several forms of improvised weaponry and booby traps, many of which can be built on an impromptu basis out of common household trash and kitchen chemicals.

Direct and detailed instructions on the specifics of dealing with riot police during a raucous demonstration, including the "best" ways to injure and disable them.

I actually still own the actual, physical book purchased in person from a real bookstore.

Along with Charles Manson's autobiography, as I recall.

I bought a physical version of that book from a major book store back in high school (early 90s).
It also had sections on how to make drugs. I remember my mom coming home and going, "Why are there like 2 dozen bananas in the freezer?"

    ;-)

    Here's the original:

Amazon.com: The Anarchist Cookbook...Amazon.com: The Anarchist Cookbook...
I don't know if the ebook was any different than this...

The tip, though, was to always pay cash so that you didn't end up on the fed's watch list. ;-)
