Who's emails do you ALWAYS open???

Hey,

Personally I LOVE the Michael Cheney emails.. they always get an open rate of 100% from me.

Very thought prevoking subject lines, and someone I would happily pay big bucks to learn from.

I find that just by subscribing to Michael Cheney I can learn a heck of a lot from his approach to email marketing.

Here are some of his past subject lines (each new line is a subject line)...

story of how i landed on the moon
Get one of these $97 products for free...‏
Father Christmas doesn't exist..‏
what does $20 million actually look like? (Jeff Johnson bonus)‏
now what?‏
Michael Cheney does Brittany Spears impersonation..
easily offended‏
they kicked me out of the supermarket‏
my wife's car crash, arctic weather and a sick dog‏
you only get one shot‏
you don't usually hear me swear but..‏
sorry Daniel it's broken
i feel like James Bond
one simple word changed his life‏
your Guru Time Machine is ready..‏
zoinks, wowsers and gadzooks
things are getting ugly..‏

So would you open them?

What other marketers's emails do you ALWAYS open?

One thing though - we like these subject lines because we're marketers ourselves and can get good ideas as to how create catchy subject phrases.

But what about folks to whom we're sending the mails?

When I try to put myself in the others boots, I'd rather say I'd open mails that clearly state what it's all about.

Jim Cockrum's newsletters, for example, say what they are about and even his broadcasts aren't so provocatively announced.

All these landings on the Moon and other things start looking a bit.. I don't know. I personally think it's got too far and soon everyone is coming back to the 'normal' subject lines.

        Good points made there SP.

the only problem you can find with putting in th esubject line exactly what your selling is

        1) You almost don't have a chance to SELL the product before the call to action.

It's difficult to put myself in newbie shoes because Ive been in the IM game for quite a few years now.. but from memory, (as a "newbie") as soon as I thought that an email was simply selling me something... I deleted it.

However if an email intrigued me, I opened it.. if the "story" caught my attention, I read it and if the call to action was persuasive enough... I clicked the link.

--but maybe I was an different to most back then?

        2) If your subject line said "buy product xyz for $xx OFFER!" it's more likely to get picked up by the spam filters.

I open the emails sent by three people for three different reasons...

Rich Schefren - quality content and genuine promotions.

Jason Moffatt - quality content, quality entertainment and genuine promotions.

Mike Filsaime - updates and info on new marketing-related products being released.

I don't really pay attention to the subject lines... I see their name and I open them knowing ahead of time what I'll take from it. Creatures of habbit, both good and bad.

I have been on so many mailing lists that in the end saturation point is reached and very few of the emails are actually read - there simply isn't enough time in the day.

I didn't realise it until reading this post that the emails I read consistently are regular newsletters that use the same title EVERY TIME! I read them because the subject interests me and i know i am not going to be subjected to yet more links to click and things to sign up for and buy.

If there is a clever headline - I skip it.

If it just says 'Agora Financial' or 'Renewable Energy News' then I read it.

Perhaps then, the key is to find a dedicated readership of a regular newsletter and NOT email and link bombardment.

....then again, perhaps I am unusual in this approach

Yes, sure you're right, but what I meant was these over-intriguing e-mail subjects without any relevance to the subject.

You know, if the message is about a new IM product, but the subject line says: ' name, I got chickenpox yesterday!' - it's just to cause curiosity and make them to open the e-mail; this is what I meant...

If the subject line says: 'name, new way of building your mailing list!' - it's to more to the pont and still is a call to action..

          But of course, tastes differ!

It changes depending on my "focus of the moment" and which projects I'm working on.

I'll open everything from marketer if I've just bought the product and I'm trying out the business plan. But if all I get is more sales pitches, I stop opening them.

The marketers that send email everyday get opened less than the ones that send less frequently.

Nobody's emails get opened 100% all the time, every time. Some days I don't open any at all, if I really need to focus a project (work or personal).

sometimes I get an ad, but the valuable content out weighs the ads by alot,

I have learned so many valuable lessons just from the lists I'm on

if I only get ads I unsubscribe,, I give everyone one a fair chance out of 10 emails I count the ads, if there are only 3 I will keep opening

I always open Sean Mize's emails. They are brief, never underdeliver, and are easy to "get out of them what I need to"

I also open the emails from my JV partners b/c I want to be accessible.

I have a very high rate of reading and replying to my list...so I almost always (only when I miss them or they go to junk) reply within a few hours to a request.

    It's a good branding method I find!

    Cheers,
