Study Guides to Augment Branded Products -- Opinions Wanted!
I have been thinking about creating "study aids" for a commercial education product. The product is not an "internet product". It is a very well respected national program that is extremely effective at teaching its material. It is sold by a traditional publisher and sold to both schools and the public. I have used it for years.
Through using the product I have recognized an opportunity to provide video based study aids to help people learn the material faster and be able to use it in a more practical way. My customers would NEED to have the branded product to get any value from my offering. This is not a way for people to skirt buying the core product. I am sure that I would end up driving business to the core product, not stealing business from them.
So here is my question:
- What do you think the publisher will do/say abou this?
- I won't be using any of their educational content directly, but I will need to mention that this is a study aid for their branded product. It is really a series of practice sessions that will help people learn the material more quickly.
- My plan is to develop affiliate income (through Amazon) by recommending the core product, and membership income through distributing my study aids in a private site / blog.
I will have a fair amount of cost involved in finding the on-screen talent and shooting the videos. I am worried that if I make this investment the publisher is going to have a cow and try to crush me with lawyers and corporate bullying.
Anyone have experience with stuff like this?
There are a billion study aid courses for branded technical and professional products, so it must be possible. I just wonder what I am going to run into.
Any advice is appreciated.
