how do you select a online employee?

Say you are looking for a webdesigner and you get ten answers , each applicant with a more or less relevant portfolio.
How do you decide whom to employ? Do you run a common assignment and see who completes it better in the fastest time or how do you hold an interview?

For me it has been trial and error. But, once I find a good one he stays in my Rolodex for future use.

I always interview them on Skype before hiring. It always pays to know your employees personally in any buisiness.

Take trial, that is the best way.

I would chat to them on Skype. Straight away you'll probably notice some who have bad communication skills that doesn't bode well for the future. Then I might give them a trial assignment - I would pay them but it would be small. Then after that you'll have a much more firm idea of who fits the bill.

  • It's mostly a trial and error thing since you dont know who you're dealing with until you actually work with him. That being said, I ONLY keep employees who can think for themselves and come up with solutions to problems on their own without asking me for guidance 24/7 through the project.

Chat with them on Skype and ask them for a free trial.

I normally interview them on skype followed by this:

Pay them a small fee for a task to see how competent they are. For example if I'm hiring a VA, I'll say install a wordpress blog, with these plugins etc and write a post.
Tell me how long it took you.

I only do this with the one I really want to hire just to give me some peace of mind that they are technically able.

    Good luck

skype is the way to go. a lot of times you talk to businesses and not directly to the employee.
In this case I have tried some trial periods of a few days checking with different companies. It's an investment in the beginning but that's just the way it goes.

Usually just give them a test task and see how well they perform.

I think the best way to select them is their previous similar job feedback. However you also may judge their portfolios before selecting an employee.

Well, I usually will work with the one with good testimonials. Portfolio aside, I also see how willing are they to work for me...Lastly, give them a small task and see how they perform.

One word of advice....Never pay them until you are satisfied with their quality of work....

      Hey Paula,

You have to look through their portfolios to see the job they had executed in the past.

You can also run a text assignment as you said and see how efficient each of them is before you make up your mind on who to work with.

All the best and luck to you,
      Devid
