TOOK ACTION - now I think I'm in over my head!!!

I approached a very successful business man in my local community and expressed interest in his business.. he has a very successful and profitable business geared toward the medical industry..

I asked him if he had ever thought about sharing his "Secrets of Success" with other professionals in the same business or creating a step by step guide for people wanting to start a similar business..

He said he had thought of doing just that several times but just never really figured out how to package/promote it.. I asked if he had considered putting a "how to" product together and promoting in via the internet..

He said he didn't know anything about promoting anything on the internet and said he could provide the expertise if I could provide the "internet stuff"

I told him I had a little bit of experience with internet marketing but had never been involved in product creation (even though I've read about every e-book and watched just about every video made on the subject) most of my experience has been with affiliate sales..

However, I've never been afraid to take on a challenge and were meeting tomorrow at lunch to discuss it further..

Any suggestions...

oh yeah I get myself into deep more often than not. mainly because I'm a big mouth

my advice would to be talk to him over the phone, and write down your conversations, key points.

let him know you will call him back when you come up with a plan, just let him know you dont want make rash desicions.

post your questions on the warrior forum, then call him back with some answers.

in my personal opinion the only way to start a product launch is to take chances, thats what you did when you approached this business man. just make it clear that it will be mostly a learning experience for you as well as him, and don't promise the world... plus if you really have read as much literature on the subject as you say you have i'm sure things will start coming together once you build a sufficient base list of actions you need to take to initiate... idk, just my opinion!

I think what happens when you're heavily involved within an industry is that you lose sight of the fact that for people outside it, even the basics can seem pretty revolutionary. The bar is really set pretty low! I mean I'm still constantly taken back when I say SEO, and then the person says "What?" and I have to be like "Search Engine Optimization.....blah blah blah into spiel about what SEO is"

I don't think you have to go in there thinking you need to reinvent the wheel (a habit I have a particularly hard time breaking). Just break down & talk about some of the basic PROVEN internet strategies that you can utilize.

IE. Keyword research. Backlinks. Forums. A blog. etc. This stuff may seem may not seem very creative to you, but to people who are not familiar with it, it can open their eyes to a whole new world.

Great responses... I feel better already... thanks

Your right about him not being involved with internet marketing.. I picked up one of his brochures and it doesn't have a website listed... I can't believe he doesn't have a website...

I know him pretty well and he's really a no fluff kinda guy... and after all expenses are paid he brings home 5 figures a month.. and from the size of the house he just built.. he spends most of it every month...

Really smart guy... just knows very little (nothing) about Internet Marketing

here's a great example - my hubby (64!) and I just launched a new text advertising service - I am usually the one that does the techie presentations but today - I was already booked - so Bob went out on his own - and this is a BIG account - 100+ restaurant locations - 100 million annual ad spend. He had to do the text demo and explain the system specs all by himself for the first time....

The mtg was scheduled for 10am - they wound up going to lunch together, and wrapped up around 1:30! They were blown away because even though he is not as teched out as I am - he was WAAAAAAY beyond these folks!

And that is what most of us find when we go back to the brick and mortar world - we take for granted what most people consider to be highly technical and 'state of the art'.

Go for it - at least you know where you can come to ask for advice!

    just a quick update:

had the first meeting with CEO of the company today - it lasted about an hour... it was scheduled for 30 minutes..

he asked a lot of questions... one of which was "have you ever done this before?" my answer was a very honest "no - I've never attempted this before"

Remember that even though I've never tried this before... I have studied it for years.. and he never even knew this type of "online info product" existed...

So in this particular situation - he has the offline business expertise and I have the online business expertise...

I asked him about his website (knowing in advance that he didn't have one) and he said he was going to call his "computer guy" about using one..

I had also checked out the keywords in his particular business niche... not a lot of traffic.. but the profit per transaction is so high that volume is really not what I'm looking for... I also found out that his competition either didn't have websites or very poor ones...

None of them have "opt in" forms included...

At the end of the meeting he said he was very interested... and wanted to meet again so I scheduled one for Monday afternoon.. he's bring in another partner of his in another company... who knows where this could lead..

Over all I think the meeting was a success...

p.s. - I know you guys already know this but NEVER NEVER NEVER LEAVE A MEETING WITHOUT BOOKING ANOTHER MEETING... unless you never want to meet again..

I'd suggest doing a telephone interview and getting him to answer say 30 questions about the industry and him. I'd the transcript of this with an offer to upgrade for the audio version at a higher price. If it's a highly targeted market you sell to and he's a known 'expert' then you'll do well. Outsource the technical side of things if you need to like setting up a website etc. You can deliver the report and the audio version via e-junkie or DLGuard.

It is a good idea to tape record your conversations with your prospect. It's hard to talk and write at the same time, and you never get it all that way.

You will find that no one minds the recording. Just tell him that you don't want to misquote him later on. It will also give you something to work from after you have left the meeting.

You can create a great audio product by going to Yahoo Answers and looking at all the questions in the niche being asked then just asking your expert and recording it on audio.

The real issue you need to deal with is how you're going to sell the product.

Do you have easy access to a list in the niche (perhaps a joint venture partner with a huge list lined up) or some other way of getting to market easily?

That's what I'd want to know before I invested any time in a project like this.

        Kindest regards,
        Andrew Cavanagh

Your right I should have recorded the conversation we had today.. we live in the same town so access to him isn't a problem.. but now I'm looking at my notes and wishing I had more details written down..

As far as audio and video goes... I got lucky.. he just purchased a small local T.V. station... the previous owner is staying on for a year so there will be a fee involved in the video and audio editing.. but he said we could get a great deal.. since he owns 50% of the station and we wouldn't be billed until after we have collected the money for the event...

My biggest issue so far.. that I know of is ... as Andrew said above ... The LIST... we will be focusing on physicians and physicians groups.. this would serve as a alternative income for them... and he wants to focus on either Florida or the West Coast... I think Florida would be best... faster access for us.. since we live in Georgia...

We could buy a list or advertise in a Medical Journal but I would love to set up a squeeze page with a video format...

what do you guys and gals think...
