$3000 in a day... Here's how I did it...

I'm not a big fan of putting a financial figure on things or making financial claims, but I do want you to read this and gain from it, hence the title (which is true).. so here's something that's worked for me a few times..

Firstly you need to pick a celebrity or public figure.. someone who is newsworthy, but not so recognised they have paparazzi following them.

Get in touch with their PR agent if they have one (best option), failing that turn up somewhere you know the celeb / public figure is going to be.

Example.. bands and comedians tour A LOT.. and there's usually a que of fans waiting at the back door after the show.

If you're going down the PR route, request an interview.. explain who you are, what your blog is about and provide a list of sample questions. You have a better chance if your blog has a 2000 or more fanbase - but some PR agencies will still only want to deal with mainstream media.

OK, so suppose everything goes well and you've been granted an interview.. or you've hung around a backstage door long enough until the fans have left (mind you some won't ever leave, until the celeb does.. pesky stalkers).

Switch on your camera and record the entire interview.. make sure you have permission to do this from the celeb, and make it clear that the video will be put on your website for free. It won't be a problem, they'll probably like the idea.

During the interview with the celeb, bring the subject round to your niche and lead them into making a *new* statement or opinion about the niche.

All you need from them is a few sentences, it really doesn't have to be much - I've done this with a celeb saying just 5 words - those 5 words made headlines across the British national press.

OK, now you've got your statement, do explain to your celeb that the press would be all over a statement like that. They will most likely get a buzz if they were mentioned in the press (more exposure and more ticket sales for them).

Now you have to write the story, at least in part, edit the video and send it directly to national newsdesks (or even international ones - it's a bit harder but the rewards are much greater because of the domino effect).

Your story should focus on the comments made about your niche and not much else. Include where, when, how etc but keep it short and snappy and to the point.

If the media pick up the story, your site becomes the source, and receives the credit for it. Nice.

Make sure you have your best offers in prime position for the flood of traffic - and now more than ever, is the time to really overdeliver (you should be doing that anyway, but ya know that). People will talk about your products.

Learn from my mistakes: The first time we did this we had to stop taking orders (physical goods) because the demand was so high.. was a lesson learned but we never made that mistake again, so make sure you:

a) have a quality customer support team behind you (emails, transaction probs, etc)
b) a very stable web host and uncapped bandwidth

And if all else fails, and the media don't care, you can always prompt a celeb endorsement for your site to help build credability. Win-win.

Shoot it down, poke holes in it, improve it.

Getting an interview from a celebrity big enough to cause even a slight bump in media mentions for your product/niche is a full time job in itself surely..

I'd be interested to know what you promoted as well.. an example is needed!

The first time we were selling DVDs, what a mess, it happened by accident - didn't realise the media had picked up the story until it was too late. It works really well with books.. if an author will say something controversial..

The BBC, USA Today, NY Times, The Telegraph, MSNBC, The Guardian and many more.. we repeated it a number of times, in different niches with different public figures. If I had to do it everyday, I'd rather get a JOB.. feel free to help improve the method anytime.
