Affiliate Marketing...Learn From My Mistake!

A simple yet overlooked mistake I made was not thoroughly reviewing the affiliate sales page...Particularly, their opt-in pop ups on the sales page!

Here's what I mean.....

People come to my affiliate site and sign up for the publisher's e-course or newsletter...That's all fine and good except that the sign-up links in the e-mails did not have my affiliate link! LOST SALES! BIG TIME!

The lesson....always review the sales page for any leaks in your affiliate income, especially opt-ins! If there are pop-ups or areas where a reader can enter an e-mail address, then test it yourself by signing up for their opt-in with a dummy e-mail and see if the order links in the autoresponder e-mails still have your affiliate ID attached....All you need to do, is to click on the order link and if you see no affiliate code at the bottom of the order page, then you know that the publisher went around your affiliate ID!

It's also a strong reason to send your traffic to an opt-in squeeze page of your own instead of directly to the affiliate page! I haven't done this yet but am working on it right now!

P.S. It's a good idea to check all of your affiliate pages every so often because publishers will often change their pages....so there may be opt-ins or other leaks that you don't even know about!

        Great article....I will admit that I really rushed through the Clickbank product selection part....Had I followed your guidelines, I would have saved a lot of frustration!

        It seems like a growing number of Clickbank products are not crediting affiliates through the opt-ins....Let the affiliate beware!

          How does Clickbank work? Does it over write the "referral" with the latest "click"..

          Usually it works like this..

          You send a visitor to affiliate website, via your affiliate (clickbank in this case) link.

          Clickbank, or whatever, sets the cookie for the referring affiliate in the end users browser.

          If there was already a cookie set, clickbank does NOT over write that cookie with a new affiliate id for the referral. This ensures the original affiliate gets the credit for the sale.

          Does Clickbank NOT operate this way? If not, that's a little scary...

            Wow- definitely have probably over-looked this point. Thanks for the idea. I've noticed some affiliate pages really suck and they use them to collect emails only and not really have a super call to action (buy my product). I noticed this on one self-improvement site I was researching to become their affiliate.

            I loved the stats on clickbank on payouts, referral, gravity, etc. Then I get there and it's basically a "store" and collect email to push their products.

            Pretty crappy I thought.

            Does anyone else have experience with this?

            clickbank does the complete opposite.. the last referral gets the credit.

              Consider a couple of scenarios....

              1) Prospective buyer clears his cookies after going to your affiliate page and then gets opt-in e-mail from affiliate....Unless your affiliate id is somehow tied in to the e-mail order link, you won't get credit for it!

              2) Prospective buyer goes to your affiliate page and opts in to publishers e-mail at home computer and then later on reads his e- opt-in email from his e-mail account on another computer (work, laptop, etc.)...Again unless your affiliate id is tied in to the e-mail order links, you won't get credit for it!

          That's when some affiliates just bypass the merchant sales page and use their own instead with their own opt in or whatever funnel deemed fit. Either because the merchant do not know how to do it or that they intentionally do it (nasty!).

          Another thing that I recently discover is that, some merchant on CB displayed more than one paying option on the sales page! No, it's not Paypal & CB but 2CO & CB!

          Never understand what these nasty merchants are thinking. They don't value affiliates.

          So, BEWARE! Check the sales page yourself before wasting your time and effort promoting a nasty merchant product.

    I agree with you on that, If I came accross something like that but felt that it would be a high converting offer, I would contact the owner and b**ch slap him/her (the publisher) and

    say you have a good product and I'd really like to promote it but won't spend my money and effort if I'm not going to be credited by your optin pop ups.
